Video is excellent. Not sure if this will be an iPhone killer, Apple has a hold of the market right now. However, some people will jump at the second version of the Palm Pre when Sprint has their 4G operating in more markets around the country. Thumbs up for me!
Oh and... A Real Keyboard? The iPhone has nothing on this. I HATE typing on my friend's iTouch which shows that when you give a phone to an inexperienced person, they shouldn't have difficulty in using it (I'm talking about telling your buddy to send the other guy a text when you're driving or something. Doing that with a "newbie" with a touchscreen sucks. ANY touchscreen, HTC Diamond, whatever, not just the iPhone's)
One time my phone got stolen and all I had to do was call Sprint and they activated my old phone, so easily. I would've lost my SIM card if my phone got stolen and been slightly more screwed
SIM Cards have nothing on Sprint's service. Please, don't say crap about how they can take over your phone, how often does that happen?
Technically speaking, it is an iPhone killer. Sales and "cool" factor wise? Never. Apple is just too strong now to be taken out.
I love how people say Sprint sucks, I've had it for YEARS and I can tell you this. In Houston Texas, Sprint is THE Best provider. T-Mobile has had so many problems early on, but now has ironed most of em out, but is mostly for the "kids".
AT&T tried ripping my mom off because she had their service and they had a complete overhaul where her minimum plan got raised and all this crap, she left and went to Sprint.
Sprint also has great service. Activating a phone is SO easy.
I've been a long time fan of Palm smart devices and finally had given them up. They were sooo behind until now, this is just amazing. I won't call it the iphone killer though, iphone's got such a huge hold of the market but now buyers finally have a choice when they are shopping for the ultimate badass device. It won't be an easy choice either. I want the Pre for sure since it looks to be more useful for my business and personal needs.
Trust me its not the iPhone killer. Thats what ppl said abou the blackberry storm and still iphone is on top and you have to remember that the new iPhone is comming out tbhis July or June anddd the 3.0 software is comming out so im not even worried that the pre will kill the iPhone. And plus Sprint sucks and theres not even that many people on it.. AT&T has way more people and its just its not going to kill it.
Reading all these comments is funny because all the iphone fanbois come out.
Who cares if the ihpone "re-invented touch screen"? Palm invented smart phones. Does that matter 3 years later? Nope.
The iphone is an amazing phone don't get me wrong but I do look forward to the day that someone does beat them (and the pre looks good enough to challenge them). Why? Because that means that apple and other companies have to step up their game to compete which means better features for me.
this kills the iphone in terms of how easily all of the features work, like the search feature and the feature where you can text different accounts all in the same conversation...awesome!!
Looks good. I see a distinct Appleness to the the Pre which is a good thing. Not surprising since Rubenstein designed it. I still somehow doubt Palm wican surpass the IPhone's huge appeal. It's not doing anything groundbreaking when compared to what Apple introduced a year earlier and we can expect a new iPhone out before the end of the year.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
its such a great phone. A buddy of mine from work has one from a friend who works at sprint-nextel. web0S is amazing! i cant wait to get one myself. I highly reccommend this phone
How man thats impossible the phone hasn't yet been checked by the fcc and theres a legal battle between them an apple for that gesture/shortcuts area plus the multitouch system.
to bad ur lieing cause its not out yet ANYWHERE EVEN EMPLOYEES CANT GET IT YET so i doubt someone that works at sprint would be able to its sad u have to lie over the internet
Multitasking, MMS, a2dp bluetooth, qwerty keypad, 3mp camera with flash compared to iphone's 2mp, "synergy" for contacts, calendar and IM, i believe copy and paste etc etc.
Give the designers some credit. It's not an iPhone clone any more than Windows was a clone of the old Mac OS. Sure, Windows stole a number of ideas from Mac but they innovated a lot too and THAT'S what is stunning about this phone. I've had more than half a dozen smartphones, each with it's own problems and for my own personal tastes, this kicks some major ass.
Leave sprint out of it, Palm always releases their phones on other networks.
Finaly, smth that really looks and works like cell phone is supposed to work. Without any BS applications. I like the keypad. I dont like touch screen keypads. Hopefully they ll make a GSM version. Good job Palm.
Yes, it has video playback but NO VIDEO CAPTURE. I know Sprint is less expensive, but there's a reason for that, including the worst attitude in the business towards their customers. Believe me, the Pre sounds like the almost perfect solution, but for me, not as long as Sprint is the only option.
Well, I was looking at the HTC Touch HD, but no 3G in US. The Nokia N97 will be available about the same time as the Palm Pre, but the Palm looks mighty fine. Two problems: No Video, SPRINT. I'll wait until it's on AT&T.
Sprint lost me because of poor customer service. I think they are finally starting to turn it around. But for now, I'm sticking with ATT. I love this phone...the real keyboard,..removable battery...MMS messaging...
I work for AT&T and I have an Iphone, this phone looks awesome! I hope we get it eventually. Competition is good and palm is one mobile phone manufacturer that definitely needed to come out with something new.
Service still average, but with the $99 everything plan it beats anything the others offer. iPhone service is somewhere around $80 and that's with limited minutes.
I have worked with phones for years, and this is simply amazing. Plus it runs Java and Web based apps, which is awesome for developers, they can ever port an existing app with this SDK.
People with iPhones are going to hate it no matter how much better it is. (Apple Kool-Aid),
watch out Iphone..Pre is gonna get ya..Sprint will reclaim its lost ground for sure..the stock is going up..some pundits were proven wrong..Palm is standing on firm and rejuvenated grounds..
I think this is reallyl great! they totally built this OS from the ground up. I'mi very happy that they did that instead of updating their current OS. New hardware needs new utilizations. I can see why the CEO is avoiding comparisons, because they are doing things differently.
I thought it's based on Linux and Webkit (the renderer Google Chrome and Safari (including the iPhone version) is based on). Although quite a lot will be Palm stuff, of course. And the interface is unique.
Anyway, this thing is totally awesome. Now with proper app support, who would want an iPhone anymore?
It is based off those, however code named WebOS (if not mistaken). I'm loving this phone because iPhone lovers hate it for one, and it does what I want with the eye candy that I love. I think palm re-invented the iPhone per say, (ahem) like how iphone re-invented touch screen phones (roll eyes).
*Multitask
*Multi-touch gestures
*Blazing fast
*Great UI with better information handling.
*plenty more.
No this is not a iPhone copy cat...it's a Palm..get it right!
For one it is an iphone knock off. For two Sprint sucks compared to ATT. Remember millions of people signed a two year contract for the iphone. Yes this is good for you if you have the Sprint but for the rest of us. We will keep the iphone
The Samsung Instinct is an iPhone knock off, the LG Vu,Voyager &Dare are knock offs. The Pre is different and slick as the iPhone, but faster, more featured with better handling of information.
People say that Apple re-invented touch screen phones, well Palm just re-invented the iPhone. Don't hate on that comment, because it's true, with all the features that the pre does that the iphone doesn't...what else can you say. Besides...sprint is cheaper, and just as fast (if not faster) then ATT.
Ya that's your answer for firing back... typical... I do not work for sprint, I have sprint and my area is JUST fine! I have had no issues with them...
"My sister-in-law worked for them and told me has bad the service was"
So you go with what other people tell you? Your sister-in-law can say what she want, ATT can't match my bill, T-mobile can't beat my coverage, and Verizon can't beat my internet speed.
But of course my friends said the same thing, I actually tried it first, and I'm glad I did.
I used to have Sprint, but jumped to AT&T (am a Blackberry nut). Sprint's service was good, but their bills were strange in that it felt like you were being overbilled for tons of stuff. Their in house customer service was okay, though.
i live in canada and have and iphone on rogers but i think they'll get this phone later one. Its definelty one to look out for, its like the iphone with more features....
this is probably the one and only time I am excited about a cell phone coming out. As a long time Blackberry user, I will actually be willing to leave for this device...this unit is stunning. Palm truly surprised me and the quality. I really thought this company was going under but was I ever wrong. They will def get my money!
it was made by some of the same people... thus the similarity. I think they've done some new and cool stuff too though and as I don't have Att I'm quite interested
I agree but it is one of those things in life. If we are in a talent contest i want you to go first so that I can improve on what you did earlier to win. In that contest I have five mins. to look at what you have done and improve. Palm has had 6 months since the 3g and over a year for the orig. I would expect a little more. Plus what is the price.
And besides, it's good with all this competition coming out with better UI's and phones, cause we as the consumer, are winning for better products are coming to us.
bummer for u lol. Sprint has always been the home of palm. Sprint is the best network period, they do have very bad customer service but that has nothing to do with the network. I can wait to get the palm pre...palm os is rock solid but is 10yrs old and I am glad they took their time to build a new os as good as the old one.
Sprint? The best network? Is that why my friends that have Sprint have choppy and dropped calls so often, while those of us with Verizon almost never have problems? I'm talking about the SF Bay Area anyway. Your area may be different. I've travelled extensively throughout the US though, and my Verizon reception, without exception, has been solid.
Verizon does cover a larger area I think, but sprint's EVDO is much faster. Either way, sprint is in no way a crappy network, now if it came on AT&T I would be upset lol.
Yeah I know they've improved since I had them about 11 years ago. If I didn't have a free Verizon phone from work I'd consider going Sprint just to get this phone.
I'm with you there, I just got into Tmobile because I wanted the G1 (Tmobile actually works well in my area, I was a little surprised lol). But now I kinda regret not waiting for this lol, its just palm said they were working on this for like 3 years now lol, I didnt expect it any time soon.
this looks so impressive and well thought out. thank goodness one company took their time to create a quality product instead of churning out mediocre phones in lue of the iphone. this is going to be huge in the US...
What ever happened to palm's excellent monthly view color coding? This was the most useful aspect of my Treo and Centro phones.

bummer for u lol.
