nice.. i didn't even know this was a cover.. i thought this was an original pearl jam song... nice to hear the original... a bit slower than the pearl jam cover, but still awesome...

Eddie Holland wrote this, The first cover was by Detroit band - The Rationals with Scott Morgan on vocals. The Rationals version swings and makes this version by the Who sound weak. The Who were cool to cover this but it doesn't have any fire to it.
This is actually a Holland-Dozier-Holland song from the very early sixties. Dunno if anyone on Motown ever recorded it, but the earliest version I know of is by Jimmy Hanna and the Dynamics from Seattle---it was a big regional hit on Seafair/Bolo records, and it rocks! It was covered for years by local PNW bands, and is certainly the reason it ended up on a Pearl Jam record.
@theseeker23 It's also a song written in 1963 by Motown songwriters Holland–Dozier–Holland, who wrote a ton of hits for the R & B label in the 60's and 70's. Originally released as a single in December 1963 by H-D-H lyricist Eddie Holland. The Who were obviously influenced by the original Blues greats and Motown in their early days. "I'm The Face"? Based on the original Slim Harpo tune: "Got Love If You Want It". Both are on Youtube.
great drum sound!

1964 recording?
jumpinjackflash1968 2 years ago
Yes, the original High Numbers recording, I believe.
The box set version is mislabeled as the High Numbers, but it's actually the Shel Talmy produced early 1965 Who version.
Whicol2 2 years ago
Actually it's by Edward Holland, he wrote it in 1963
waarde2 2 years ago 3
Irrelevant. That's the original recording.
It was written by Holland Dozier Holland....as in Eddie Holland.
I was just talking about the two different Who/High Numbers versions found on their various compliation albums.
Whicol2 2 years ago
@waarde2 no it is Eddie Holland, he was Edward only as a writer, when he released records he was just Eddie
