I sympathize with your views. Several times I was arrested in the 80"s and you no what good it did, not a damn thing. I was openly threatedned, almost lost my job and was not overly well liked by my community. The footage that is here was incorporated into the Democracy Now! broadcast. Outtakes should be available next week when the show's producers (and their footage) return to New York. Also, it is illegal to arrest members of the press (see 1st Amendment of the Constitution) for covering events in a public space. This is one of those instances. Goodman's charges will probably be dropped, as have about 1/2 of charges for RNC protesters (citizens).
Journalists actually have a better chance of charges being dropped than protesters, as their 1st Amendment rights allow them to move freely in spaces police have designated as being off-limits to citizens. The video of Goodman's arrest, which is widely available on YouTube, would likely be used to prove her innocence if charges were not dropped. Thanks for your comment. Obviously, the police were ignoring the screams "PRESS!!! PRESS!" (and beating up protesters, especially if they were nonviolent seems to elude the point of being a police officer), but the police were just doing their jobs... They do what it takes to keep the population "in line."

I sympathize with your views. Several times I was arrested in the 80"s and you no what good it did, not a damn thing. I was openly threatedned, almost lost my job and was not overly well liked by my community. I wanted nothing better than to get involved after Bush but with a chronically sick wife and a job to proted it is not easy. Police stations everywhere should be circled by huge ongoing vigils, in exactly the same way they circle people working for improving life. Vigils with signs and banners should remind them what the constitution & abuse of authority means. NOT protecting war criminals! When you add up all the taxes, Fed income, State income, social security, fico, gas taxes, food taxes, clothing taxes, Phone taxes,and fees Cable TV taxes, tolls, PROPERTY TAXES,etc. it all adds up to almost 60% of my income...I've paid for my education and am still paying it off...The bail out was a horrible Idea... OK, I was too hasty in my "judgment" about the comments, having hastily read just a few of the most recent . .. seems like more people are denouncing the actions of the cops. But I still believe in smashing their riot gear asses. The American psyche (ironically, including my own) is extremely violence prone, so we might as well self destruct by redoing the civil war. Where's the stuff that happened before the arrest? Was the camera turned the other way? If there's nothing to hide, show it all, like the one where Amy keeps trying to push against the police officers and then is surprised that she got her stupid ass arrested. The footage that is here was incorporated into the Democracy Now! broadcast. Outtakes should be available next week when the show's producers (and their footage) return to New York. Also, it is illegal to arrest members of the press (see 1st Amendment of the Constitution) for covering events in a public space. This is one of those instances. Goodman's charges will probably be dropped, as have about 1/2 of charges for RNC protesters (citizens).

Journalists actually have a better chance of charges being dropped than protesters, as their 1st Amendment rights allow them to move freely in spaces police have designated as being off-limits to citizens. The video of Goodman's arrest, which is widely available on YouTube, would likely be used to prove her innocence if charges were not dropped. Thanks for your comment. It really helps readers and viewers think more critically about these issues and learn their rights.

The point is that she is a journalist filming the situation for a television news broadcast. The police should have looked at her press credentials and simply walked around her.
This is how you can tell whether or not you live in a democracy: by the treatment of journalists and other innocent bystanders when the riot police arrive.

You think that just because they're police, they shouldn't at some point down the road question what the fuck they're being told to do, and whether or not it's justifiable? Maybe not in this instance, but where do you draw the line.
And more importantly, at what point does law simply become the will of those in power, instead of the will of the people for justice.

Buy billions of dollars in adverts, and bomb TV news channel studios that don't promote your product (think: al-Jazeera in Baghdad). Granted the press goes to far sometimes...suppression by force should only be tolerated in defense. This is flat out wrong. The cop was simply to hasty and the other cops were so rushed they probaly did not grip the situation. Guess they fail the competence test. The press goes too far? In what way? I can't really think of any example where the press EVER goes too far in this country. With the exception of independent media, the press in this country never goes far enough in my opinion. Tonight the local news in my city ran a story about a cat stuck in a tree...meanwhile independent journalists who do not rely on corporate sponsors/partnerships are getting violently arrested in the streets for doing their jobs. This is scary.
