Honestly, I do not know why there are 11 dislikes, he's truly a life savior, thank you so much Alex you're the best, hopefully if you haven't already, can you make a video on how to install themes to phpbb directory (-_- teenagers) Ahaha.

Thanks, Alex. Much to my surprise, I now have a functioning BB because of your clear instruction. I watched the whole thing once to get the gist of it, then I went through pausing and rewinding where needed as I did each step. The only thing I did differently was to drag the forum folder in File Manager from my root directory to the subdomain directory I had created and left the path as /forum. So I didn't use a redirect. Many thanks again. Good Karma to you.
The bottom line is your tutorial was quick and easy so 5 STARS for you!!! Thanks so much. I have been using a hosting service that uses CPanel and never knew I could just do it myself. I thought the CPanel setup was the only way. Great stuff :)
Nice video,it helped me a lot to install a forum in my site,i have a request to you, will you make a video lesson for installing ajax chat in forums, thanks a lot
One thing has changed since Alex West made this video: if you get a page that reads "It was not possible to write the configuration file..." just go into cpanel and check the config.php file and click on "Change Permissions" in the top menu bar and reset permissions to 666 - read / write for everyone. Then refresh the install webpage that reads "It was not possible to write the configuration file..." and it should continue as in Alex's vid.
@Sauleha007 I think the config.php file is in the "forum" folder - I can't remember exactly. But changing it did help and then following the rest of what I put might get you through it.

I am going to redo the installation and take the forum directory out so that it will be a dedicated forum site and not a forum add-on
Just 2 questions
1: This is irrelevent as I am going to reload, but if I used a ftp client and copied the content out of the "forum" folder into the "public_html" folder would everything still work?
2: Is there any restrictions on how many users you could have in a forum?

sorry, I don't have an answer for that one. I can only guess that something went wrong (interrupted?) during unzip and not all files made it out. All i can suggest is to try unzipping again.

In the root of the folder you have uploaded/unzipped the phpbb files/folders to is a file "index.php" that is part of the installation. If you have an exisiting file in the same location, such as "index.html", or sometimes something odd like "welcome.html" it will block the phpbb index.php file, so delete (after backing up) such files. Also, try typing the path to the installation file directly...

So, in the end phpbb takes up little room and works well even on free hosts. the only reason to upgrade is to increase db performance which can be a bottleneck.
Web hosting providers either have it or they don't. Others, such as godaddy, have it but only if you pay extra for it. If a hosting company does not have cpanel, they will have another control panel for you to use, whether that control panel is a commercial product (like cpanel is) or their own proprietary interface. I just demo on cpanel here becuase it is the most used control panel.
Awesome video about installing a PHPBB forum on your website. I now know exactly how to install a forum on my website, so that people can discuss about different subjects with each other. I'm gonna look if I can share this video with other people. Thanks Alex!
cPanel is arguably the most used control panel out there, but every control panel out there will be able to do these basic tasks, just in a different way. So, there will be no problem if you use whatever control panel you have, as long as you can basically follow along.
No, it is not important. I demo on cPanel only because I have it and so do many people, but any control panel that your web hosting provider has will do. For example, godaddy does not have cPanel (unless you pay extra for it) but their proprietary control panel works just fine.
Could you possibly do this for 1&1 as well? The cpanel is really diffrent, and it's all I have at the moment. Even though the tutorial is time consuming you'll know you'll at least be helping someone out right?
this is what is happening. This is pretty normal, but varies from host to host. If you dont have ssh (which is a linux/unix command line tool you run directly on the hosts server, which most people dont have) you dont have many options. SOME hosts have a back-end control panel tool that helps with this ownership problem, but most dont. So, all you can really do is edit the file manually, OR connect to your site via ftp, right click on the file, chose permissions, and chmod to it 777.
Joomla will now be able to edit the file, but the file is vulnerbale to hackers now. SO, when you are done, chmod the file BACK to the original permissions (certainly remove all "everyone/world" permissions). The other thing that helps is to properly configure Joomla's ftp file system layer. Watch my tutorial on that subject.
configuration . php is THE most import file in your joomla installation. It stores VERY sensitive information such as your database password and main joomla ftp password. BUT, sometimes you have to be able to edit it. You can either edit it through the joomla cms back-end, or manually (once you understand how it works). When you edit it through joomla, it is joomla itself that the server sees as editing the file, not you. As such, your hosts server might easily complain...
hey alex, i just wanted to thank you for posting this. I started a website and it was really confusing, but you were very clear with your instructions
Thanks you so much. This is a really helpful video. Ive also recently look thought your other videos. That you have uploaded and i think they will become as useful as this one. thank you.
i have that daft spyware protect 2009... can i manually remove that??? i have xoftspyse, but i installed it after i got the viruses, n it just wont run, can i manually remove it????
Fantastic video tutorial, being a fan of Joomla I have spent the past three months putting up with fireboard and all the problems that went with it, i bit the bullet to install phpbb but really was unsure, Alex made it so easy. Cheers mate
yeah, fireboard is NOT a fully featured forum, but it does have its benefits, namely tight integration with Joomla and Community Builder, but it doesn't offer much in the way of Admin configurations or plugins. If using PHPBB with Jomla, try RokBridge which works quite well to integrate the two (with a few minor glitches). BUT, phpbb needs to be installed effectively INSIDE joomla, so try it out asap before you build up phpbb to much and make it harder to install.
Thank you Alex, this was the best tutorial I have seen on youtube regarding this installation. I tried to go solo but I failed. Good thing you made this tut :) Have you seen those other tuts in which they have music and you can't see anything because they don't have auto pan? LMAO. Thanks again.
sure you can (assuming you are on a host with php and mysql). You will have to do one of two things though:
1)put your forum on a subdomain
ie. forum. yoursite. com
2)create a .htaccess file in the root of your website with this line in it:
DirectoryIndex mynewpage. html (without the space)
This is because phpbb NEEDS that index.php file to run and so will by default be the page that your website goes to, so that line in the .thaccess file tells your site to go to mynewpage. html instead.
Nevermind. I got it working. This tutorial was the one thing I got to work. My friends and I were tring and tring and I finaly went to youtube and found your tutorial. I am forever greatful. Thank you!
Great video. Would anyone happen to know an FTP client that uploads the file? I have been using FileZilla but that keeps disconnecting me from the server after about 1,000 files of the complete 2,000 have been uploaded. If anyone can help thanks!
Thanks a tone! You certainly helped me out!

bluehost uses cpanel.. thank you for this tutorial, quick, fast.. you've got a subscriber!
what are some other software we can install through cpanel?
sentient1705 2 years ago
Do you have to pay to have an account on cpanel?
DeoxysDNA 2 years ago
Web hosting providers either have it or they don't. Others, such as godaddy, have it but only if you pay extra for it. If a hosting company does not have cpanel, they will have another control panel for you to use, whether that control panel is a commercial product (like cpanel is) or their own proprietary interface. I just demo on cpanel here becuase it is the most used control panel.

Awesome video about installing a PHPBB forum on your website. I now know exactly how to install a forum on my website, so that people can discuss about different subjects with each other. I'm gonna look if I can share this video with other people. Thanks Alex!
Robbertbiz 2 years ago
one question. What happen if you not use cPanel???
Rogueixpresents 2 years ago
cPanel is arguably the most used control panel out there, but every control panel out there will be able to do these basic tasks, just in a different way. So, there will be no problem if you use whatever control panel you have, as long as you can basically follow along.
alexwestconsulting 2 years ago
So cPanel like not important??
Rogueixpresents 2 years ago
No, it is not important. I demo on cPanel only because I have it and so do many people, but any control panel that your web hosting provider has will do. For example, godaddy does not have cPanel (unless you pay extra for it) but their proprietary control panel works just fine.

Could you possibly do this for 1&1 as well? The cpanel is really diffrent, and it's all I have at the moment. Even though the tutorial is time consuming you'll know you'll at least be helping someone out right?
Lol nice tutorial man, but I can't fully do it.

This is a fantastic walk through. Nice job.
Any chance of you doing a look under the hood of phpbb? Setting it up. administrating, etc.
I'm sure it would be most helpful.
Many thanks.

this is what is happening. This is pretty normal, but varies from host to host. If you dont have ssh (which is a linux/unix command line tool you run directly on the hosts server, which most people dont have) you dont have many options. SOME hosts have a back-end control panel tool that helps with this ownership problem, but most dont. So, all you can really do is edit the file manually, OR connect to your site via ftp, right click on the file, chose permissions, and chmod to it 777.
alexwestconsulting 2 years ago
Joomla will now be able to edit the file, but the file is vulnerbale to hackers now. SO, when you are done, chmod the file BACK to the original permissions (certainly remove all "everyone/world" permissions). The other thing that helps is to properly configure Joomla's ftp file system layer. Watch my tutorial on that subject.
alexwestconsulting 2 years ago
how did you do that cool switching thing where a bar comes up and you could select your pages?
diablo9333 2 years ago
configuration . php is THE most import file in your joomla installation. As such, your hosts server might easily complain...
alexwestconsulting 2 years ago
when i do this, it shows that config.php is unwritable. what should i do? thanks

Fantastic video tutorial, being a fan of Joomla I have spent the past three months putting up with fireboard and all the problems that went with it, i bit the bullet to install phpbb but really was unsure, Alex made it so easy. Cheers mate
gun16qpdc 3 years ago
yeah, fireboard is NOT a fully featured forum, but it does have its benefits, namely tight integration with Joomla and Community Builder, but it doesn't offer much in the way of Admin configurations or plugins. If using PHPBB with Jomla, try RokBridge which works quite well to integrate the two (with a few minor glitches). BUT, phpbb needs to be installed effectively INSIDE joomla, so try it out asap before you build up phpbb to much and make it harder to install.
alexwestconsulting 3 years ago
Thank you Alex, this was the best tutorial I have seen on youtube regarding this installation. I tried to go solo but I failed. Good thing you made this tut :) Have you seen those other tuts in which they have music and you can't see anything because they don't have auto pan? LMAO. Thanks again.
DanDiaProductions 3 years ago
sure you can (assuming you are on a host with php and mysql).

Great video. Would anyone happen to know an FTP client that uploads the file? I have been using FileZilla but that keeps disconnecting me from the server after about 1,000 files of the complete 2,000 have been uploaded. If anyone can help thanks!
