@KCArmstrongXIIV its bigotry spewed like this that divide our country and make it more difficult for us to unite. keep up with your hate filled words. the candidates you support spew the exact same rhetoric
Friedman is a clown and a tool. I cant believe that nytimes has still kept him on. His analysis usually is as bad as the day his tried to justify the war in Iraq.
i think what thomas frieddick forgot to mention when he said: " war, timeout, war, timeout", was that during those timeouts israel received billions of dollars in aid from america and jews around the world.
@israelifaggot And I think what YOU forgot to mention was that the israeli-palestinian conflict is timeless and, unfortunately, hopeless. It's been attempted to be tackled by so many administrations, and look at the progress that has come: nothing! Palestines and Israelis alike are sympathized by the United States. How far can one United States president, COMPLETELY excluded from the situation, do to fix this? This conflict is between Israel and Palestine, not the United States and Israel.
Friedman is a very influential person and his constant misrepresentation of the facts is laughable. this is where many americans find their information related to current affairs and his failures to acknowlege international law and relations in regards to israel and many other issues is disgusting and misleading the american people into believing this drival.
Friedman makes some mistakes here, and I would hope Fareed understands the mistake. The issue of making the mistake is that both gentleman are highly esteemed individuals, and on these matters their respective opinions shape viewpoints. But as Friedman says, "I'm no Afghan expert".
Here's what Friedman gets wrong, and it is fundamental.
He makes the claim that Afghans don't need to be trained for war, comparative to Brazilians and soccer. This may appeal to the imagination, but it is fallacy
Then he says that the Afghan army's training is wasteful, the taliban and Al Qaeda aren't receiving training. This point is beyond ignorance. It is well documented that the taliban and AQ operate training bases, which during the 90's were administered by Pak ISI. Further, the mujaheddin were equipped to fight a guerrilla war, this does not involve the KSA's that a governmental army must have in order to do carry out its job. While conventional forces must engage guerrillas, insurgents, and
Mr. Friedman then goes on to justify his argument by saying that the United States needs to focus on domestic nation building. Again, he's no Afghan expert. With the Soviet withdrawal, the US pulled out of Afghanistan, to do exactly that. The result: Afghan civil war; the rise of the Taliban; the loss of contact in Afghanistan and the rise of Al Qaeda. This whole argument fails to understand the benefits of nation building, and seemingly takes a NeoCon viewpoint that misses how Nation Build
ing is beneficial to the Nation builder. It creates a dependency and relationship. Afghanistan has tremendous potential, for the region and the world. To pull out, would turn the country from an opportunity to a threat. This is simple strategic thinking-something Mr. Friedman claims to be doing in making his disturbingly simple assumption.
@MrThoJohnson one way to bring afghanistan into the global economy is to pay the farmers of opium rather than destroy their fields. The west has a chronic shortage of opium for medicinal uses and the easy way to solve both problems would be to purchase the opium produced in afghanistan which would provide a legitimate income and earnings and solve western problems at the same time. But ideology is in the way once again preventing both parties from moving forward in a positive direction.
