Because I believe this very video - the song used in it, to be exact - converted me irretrievably in 2007 from the maistream gothic metal into old-school gothic rock. Couldn't take my ears off and felt for the first time urge to dress in black tattered clothes ;) I haven't saved URL to this video back then and it took me months to find it once again... and I have found it so easy for the first time. Miracle? Whatever - I am thankful.

If you think you're goth, and by the sounds of it, you have every right to, then you are one. Goths aren't just one stereo type. heck, I'm goth and I like pink and bubbles and butterflies, and gory movies make me sick, but I'm still goth. If you want to try it, go for it, cause you won't know if you are goth unless you do.

I know you didn't have much time, and describing goth culture in a couple of minutes is a hard job, but you're really being simplistic. Do you really believe "Bela Lugosi's dead" was that meaningful? What about Joy Division, for instance? (And remember Von would sue you for citing TSOM as an example of goth band.)

Well by genre Within Temptation is Gothic Metal, along with being Symphonic metal. Samefor Epica,Sirenia, Nightwish and stuff, even though the artists are not goths themselves, their music genres is. Come on people, goth doesnt mean you have to stick to age old bands like Bahaus, good as they might be, they are a bit ....old. Evolve with time.

I agree on your video. When I was little when we were driving, I would ask if we could go drive around the cementary because I found it interesting. But then my parents would look at me like a freak and ignore me. Still my parents probably think I'm a disgrace to our family because what I like. They even gave me a limit to what to wear. The romantic or vampire victorian goth has a beauty that is awesome, reflected in the clothing and the music. Personally, I like Midnight syndicate and Nightwish. Alot of people don't like the stuff and I get nasty looks from people downtown, but that is just amusing. Personally, I love em all, every last one of em;) Well nearly anyway!
i agree to most part however as someone who was a goth first time around it was more about the music and the dressing up was a bi product of this. Now i fear goth is the other way around. The pity for me is that kids are not starting new scenes anymore- instead they are ruled by the music press and their peers. goth just came right out from what the kids were doing and then the record industry jumped on it - not the other way around as it is now.
Goth music has changed a lot, and if the general public (including Goths) see that music as Goth, maybe it actually is. It's simply changed into that type of sound. ;)
very interesting and keen observation of the goth culture and its mis-conceptions. i never labeled myself in any click but enjoyed seeing sisters, alien sex fiend, specimen, christian death, etc in my early adult life and was captivated by lucid serene dreams amplified by emotional trepidation. fyi, a. eldritch & s.o.m never claimed to be goths but just rockers & i agree, whole heartily..

Look up Specimen - Returning from a journey, Interview, and Whitby Goths on The Culture Show and you'll see a black trad goth woman dancing at the batcave and a black romantic goth man chatting with the interviewer at the whitby gothic weekend. :)
Goth is not only a music style, is a sub culture, an expression form and life style that goes beyond the clothes or music. Many people have an erroneous vision than the Gothic culture and they confuse with Satanism and dark cults. Any more far from the truth.

This is so stupid; Goth was an ancient Germanic people that inhabitated Scandinavia, Eastern Germany and many other places in Europe and Northern Africa....UNDERSTAND this!!!! Everything you listen to is just a descendant genre of punk rock. Essentially, you are all rockers who enjoy this great array of post punk movements that came out of the 70's. Calling a rock genre "Goth" is like calling some sort of new metal "Mayan" or "Etruscan".

its not that i AM a goth, just that sometimes i DO goth. and what I think a goth is is someeone with an overactive imagination!! we like to dress up in costumes, read nerdy books and do other nerdy things like video games, cosplay and rennasaince faires, many of us like extravagant mythical religions like neopaganism, we even like our sex to have a lot of make believe ;) what i think of a goth is like a geek who is focused on the melancholy side of things.

Um... has this video by any chance been uploaded before 2009? Because I believe this very video - the song used in it, to be exact - converted me irretrievably in 2007 from the maistream gothic metal into old-school gothic rock. Couldn't take my ears off and felt for the first time urge to dress in black tattered clothes ;) I haven't saved URL to this video back then and it took me months to find it once again... and I have found it so easy for the first time. Miracle? Whatever - I am thankful.

I thought Goth originated from marauding tribes somewhere in Germany. And then they became something like Gothic Knights and people and stuff. That picture of the Gothic cathedral backs me up. (@_@)
And then the entire culture vanishes and revives into what we have now... a world-wide "subculture"? why a subculture?

@lilithrozz There is no such thing as "You can only be goth if..." Just watch the gothic charm school videos. If you think you're goth, and by the sounds of it, you have every right to, then you are one. Goths aren't just one stereo type. heck, I'm goth and I like pink and bubbles and butterflies, and gory movies make me sick, but I'm still goth. If you want to try it, go for it, cause you won't know if you are goth unless you do.

I know you didn't have much time, and describing goth culture in a couple of minutes is a hard job, but you're really being simplistic. Do you really believe "Bela Lugosi's dead" was that meaningful? What about Joy Division, for instance? (And remember Von would sue you for citing TSOM as an example of goth band.)

In this generation, Goth is watered down, and has no real meaning other than a dark clad accessory and/or defining the self as unique or enigmatic within an obscure group. I appreciate the possible fact that some will be enlightened by this video.

What if you met someone that liked all of these things but they were still to young to live by themselves and their parents didnt approve wearing these type of clothes, or listen to this type of music ect? Would you consider them goth. And I can say...Its shit annoying living with people that criticise you for who you are. Well by genre Within Temptation is Gothic Metal, along with being Symphonic metal. Samefor Epica,Sirenia, Nightwish and stuff, even though the artists are not goths themselves, their music genres is. Come on people, goth doesnt mean you have to stick to age old bands like Bahaus, good as they might be, they are a bit ....old. Evolve with time.

@Sunandmagicx It's called gothic metal, but it's more metal than gothic and that's why gothic metal's official just metal with a sound which is a bit more dark, but clearly not gothic.
And please don't tell me I'm old fashioned 'cause I know that I'm grown up with within temptation, nightwish and such, but their sound just can't be compared to the old stuff...
Hmm, feels pretty strange to say that, being a 13 years old girl, by the way...

I agree on your video. When I was little when we were driving, I would ask if we could go drive around the cementary because I found it interesting. But then my parents would look at me like a freak and ignore me. Still my parents probably think I'm a disgrace to our family because what I like. They even gave me a limit to what to wear. Young people nowdays have nothing but a ghost of an idea of how it really was back then. About the whole bands that aren't goth thing... so like, it just confuses me is all. x3 Because I like Marilyn Manson, Evanescence, and Emilie Autumn. I know that Evanescence is like rock and all that, but I actually would describe it as goth. I don't really know why, but I can't think of any other words to describe that band. And I know Emilie Autumn is victoriandustrial music.
But to me, goth looks like syle/ music/ way of thinking.

The romantic or vampire victorian goth has a beauty that is awesome, reflected in the clothing and the music. Personally, I like Midnight syndicate and Nightwish. Alot of people don't like the stuff and I get nasty looks from people downtown, but that is just amusing. Personally, I love em all, every last one of em;) Well nearly anyway!

i agree to most part however as someone who was a goth first time around it was more about the music and the dressing up was a bi product of this. Now i fear goth is the other way around. The pity for me is that kids are not starting new scenes anymore- instead they are ruled by the music press and their peers. goth just came right out from what the kids were doing and then the record industry jumped on it - not the other way around as it is now.

Goth music has changed a lot, and if the general public (including Goths) see that music as Goth, maybe it actually is. It's simply changed into that type of sound. ;)

very interesting and keen observation of the goth culture and its mis-conceptions. i never labeled myself in any click but enjoyed seeing sisters, alien sex fiend, specimen, christian death, etc in my early adult life and was captivated by lucid serene dreams amplified by emotional trepidation. fyi, a. eldritch & s.o.m never claimed to be goths but just rockers & i agree, whole heartily..

Look up Specimen - Returning from a journey, Interview, and Whitby Goths on The Culture Show and you'll see a black trad goth woman dancing at the batcave and a black romantic goth man chatting with the interviewer at the whitby gothic weekend. :)

Goth is not only a music style, is a sub culture, an expression form and life style that goes beyond the clothes or music. Many people have an erroneous vision than the Gothic culture and they confuse with Satanism and dark cults. Any more far from the truth.
