As told by Tom T Hall...He went to the opry, and left his banjo in his station wagon, when he came out to go home, someone had busted out the rear window of his car, and left another banjo.
I like the idea of drop thumb to provide rythmic interest rather than melody. I think that's what your doing here. I could be just plain wrong. I play this song a lot but never considered either dropping or doubling in 3/4 time. Nicely done and I am very fortunate to be exposed to your rendiiton. Maybe I'll move the song into double C and see what come out. Fun!
The sock quiets the banjo. Makes it softer. If you're playing in a dance hall you need the volume but sitting around the house, softer is better. You can adjust the placement of the sock and change the tone. I'm not sure, but often wonder if the expression "Put a sock in it!" came from annoyed family members of banjo player's. I use medium guage. Got Bill Keith's on this one.
Amazing what talent.I could easily spend a week and a half in this mans company.

Thank You. I think I like the part where it's played slow better than the fast part. This is a great song to sing.
