  • I studied with Howard and he is one of the few that studied how to learn.

And he developed such a distinctive style that he could not be mistaken

for anyone else. I was always inspired by his inventiveness and ability to take a well worn standard and make me sit up and listen. He really was a musicians musician.

  • excelent version of the genius HR! thumbs up for his legacy!

  • "Humble is the WAY to Glory"roccoprch1. Inspired by a certain, first-hand experience by the participant (not myself) of one of Howard Robert's workshop!

  • Howard Roberts was one of the best jazz guitar players but he was also a GREAT teacher. I helped run seminars for him in the mid 70's where, for about $75, you could sit in a room with 20 other guys and Howard and learn as much as you could absorb. If you walked away without becoming at least 300% better it was your fault, not Howard's. He worked hard to share his gift with anyone who wanted to learn.

  • @juliashimwell I was fortunate enough to do that in Chicago and it led me to GIT, a year later, thanks to all involved, what a great time and great man. Thanks, Clive.

  • @uncleclunk Yep, he was a great, great man. Glad you got to benefit from his teaching.

  • @uncleclunk hey I used to see HR play at The Lighthouse and at Donte's. I too thought he was the coolest dude on the planet, bought a Benson Amp when I saw him using one, can't understand why there aren't tons of videos of him playin live, doing seminars, audio/ video contributions from students, like there are on Ted Greene's site. Anyone in possesion pls come forth!

  • @juliashimwell Was that before he was teaching at GIT before that was the grove school of music i knew dick grove

  • @spacepatrolman It was before - I think GIT got going because he was tired of being on the road all the time.

  • @juliashimwell he was one of the main instructors at git then they also had tommy tedesco mundell lowe was teaching film scoreing at the grove school of music

  • Hey, what a great player Howard Roberts was !

    Very nice tone too !

What is the very nice electric guitar we can see on this clip ?

    It's so nice !

  • @mikka972 Possibly the Gibson Howard Roberts model?

  • @mikka972 It's not a Gibson Howard Roberts, or any Gibson...look at the pickups. They look like filtertron Gretch pickups to me, but the guitar is clearly not a Gretch. This is a mystery. The body closely resembles a Martin electric, but it is too fancy. If I had to guess, I would say a its a Framus.

  • @alexdroogie100 Looks like a First Act... A guitar which, frankly, has nothing to do with this clip! As for the HR guitars, I have had a Fusion III for the last ten years and it is a great and versatile instrument.

  • @Wileylikethehawk You are almost certainly correct- it looks like a First Act Delia. The Howard Roberts Fusion is a great guitar- I am surprised it is not more popular. Howard also played a Telecaster as well as the 175. Without a doubt one of the very best musicians of his era- supremely inventive yet still able to play great stuff within the confines of the session man's orbit. A real pro- I wish there were more live clips of him in action to be enjoyed.

  • Right on Howard !! : )))

  • Very nice.
