Mastic tape creeps, and that's why I've stopped using it for anything to do with ducts. Aluminum tape is stickier, it conforms to different shapes better than mastic, and it never creeps. All-in-all, aluminum is better.
First of all, those screws are self-tapping, but they're not TapCons. TapCons are special screws that anchor into concrete. They're blue in color. Second, instead of aluminum tape, why not mastic? If you truly want to stop leakage in your duct, you want to use mastic to seal it.
Great Video. Some mention of grounding might have been included. The possibility of a dust explosion has always given me the willies. Thanks for reminding me to use 45's instead of 90's duh can't believe I forgot that.
I also think you have way too much flex, and it's got way too little bend radius. Your connection to your planer looks particularly tortuous. You should plumb your fixed tools to the hard pipe directly. Large diameter sweep elbows are good. Another option is two standard 45s with a short piece of straight pipe. Spiral metal pipe is great, but it's expensive. PVC Sewer & Drain pipe is more affordable. The HVAC snap pipe is okay if you get the heavy duty version. No grounding is needed.
I've been using my system for about 3 years now and it works perfectly. Even the planer has never clogged, regardless of whether I'm planing heavy, not-completely-dry wood or light, dry stuff. None of my machines are fixed, so flex pipe is essential. I've learned the hard way that any kind of plastic pipe is no good. Even though it's smooth, for some reason it reduces air flow considerably compared to plastic.
I have a 2 hp DC with a filter like yours with a skirt between a 30 gallon garbage can & the bottom of the bag rim. I also have a shop built air scrubber very much like your manufactured one.
I have shied away from a floor sweep because anything metal that may be sucked up into this type of system can create a spark which can set in the system & smolder catching fire later when I am not in the shop & bye bye shop. I would suggest using a regular shop vac to clean your floors.
Excellent and informative. Can't wait to build my own collection system. It will have a cyclone in it too and be mounted outdoors over a trailer. I'm lazy.
Belfab collectors also have the canisters with the pedal to knock loose dust off the filter.
There is also another type of pipe, works really well! It snaps together like you say is cheap, but its just as solid as spiral pipe, and is a sinch to install. It is made by Kirk & Blum Best part is that you can always take something down and redo it if you add on.
I see you use the poly hose, great choice, some of the better tubing there is! It cost more but the added strength and suction is great.
Thankyou for your tips, Im just trying to find out the dynamic's for setting up my shed for dust collection and I have multiple machines to run. Does it make any difference how far away my small 2hp dust extractor is from my machines? My Thicknesser needs the best extraction out of them all so should i have extractor next to it? Ideally i would have it outside just under cover but will be 8 meters of pipe away. Thanks for any advise you can give me on the matter. :)
.... thank you for a really well put together video. Your advice is right on the mark, and who knew that there was so much ambient dust hanging around?
Surely, if your ambient dust filter is picking up that much fine dust, it suggests that your main filter system is just letting it through. Have you considered a cyclone?
Hello Ruelsmith,

you did not mention anything about grounding your dust collection system. what is the best way to do this?

but I think you use way too much hose, it really slows down the volicity and suction.
When installing pipe in industrial wood shops we use as little as possible and try to hard pipe as much as possible.
Great video non the less buddy!

Great advice and well presented. Thank you. I'm a subscriber!
Getting the right stuff will be quite a challenge though as I live in Italy.

Hey! you didn't go into detail about the chop saw. You just teased us with what you made. More detail please. Love the video.
