There are lots of people with 'chips on their shoulders' who will complain about anything as being 'racist'. Just take it as a joke, as it is intended.
he's incredibly funny - and I laugh every time I see this - but the thing is that his humor is almost entirely racial stereotypes. There is no way that me - a white skinned guy could get up there and tell the same jokes. just no way - I personally don't think it is best to have humor at anyone's expense. but still he's gifted
Yeah you can, just make sure you don't leave out the white jokes .. :) That's why I think Sacha Baron Cohen is a racist because he makes fun of everyone else but his own, basically a british jew
Russel does not hate. Yes he makes fun of CULTURAL stereotypes, NOT racial stereotypes. View all of his videos before rushing to judge him. He's the most ANTI-RACIST comic I've seen. Yes being a whitey does limit what we can say. We inherit the baggage of generations of racism from slavery until the present day where white officers pull over black drivers because of their color. So we can't do all the humour, but that's trivial compared to what others face... think about it.
@shockthesky I disagree with the comment about how you couldn't do that type of comedy. There are plenty of white comics that touch on race. There's just a level of tactfulness that is needed to do it. As long as you're funny...that's all that matters.
Russel Peters did this show a while back. What you see is just the exerpt on his Chinese impersonations (obviously) but the whole show is actually about all cultures. Peters is brave in mocking our sense of cultural esteem but his point really is that depite our obvious cultural difference, "we're all the same". He's not a rap artist- he's straight up, a stand up comedian, born in India and raised American.
Have you watched the whole thing...? He blatantly admits being Indian... dunno 'bout the Canadian part, but he sure as hell never admits to being raised Canadian...
And you've obviously never been to any of his shows because he constantly refers to his Canadian upbringing. Heck, even if you watch THIS full routine, he talks about growing up in Canada.
For your own benefit man, don't talk about shit you know nothing about.
You must be an American. Here in Canada we celebrate our ethnic diversity. When Russel says he's Indian, he means he was raised in an Indian culture, just as many Canadians were raised in different cultures. It is not blatant to associate oneself with a culture, and your choice of words is telling.
His name is Russel Peters. He was born and raised in Canada, watch some of his other stuff. He talks a lot about being the kid of immigrants etc, and how he was born here but his parents weren't.
He talks about him and his family being Indian because they are. You can be an Indian and a Canadian, and many immigrants to Canada identify themselves like that.
So my question to you is whether you are a second generation immigrant? I have first hand experience with this.
Do you identify yourself by the culture you adopt? If Russel Peters says he's Canadian, I say I believe it. If I say I am Australian I say I'm speaking the truth for as much as I know it to be true.
But if I walk into any airport, no amount of personal identification with being Australian will keep me from being randomly inspected, checked, even held against my will.
I will attribute that to Middle Easterns being depicted as potential threats. I will even attribute that to Middle Easterns having succeeded in attacking The West. I will attribute my being held as my identity I cannot escape from nor choose to.
Russel Peters is Canadian- whatever. At the very beginning I said he was Indian. And I don't think any white person can understand that! And any ethnic person saying they're white is delusional and should be ashamed of ignoring their heritage!
my friends were doing a sketch in my skool 4 drama and one boy who was chinese done the same act he just did and i didnt recognised until now that the boy stole his act that day i was lmao but now i feel cheated
wahahaha.. he talking about differences between chinese and indian... I guess he is a indian... but i like the last pharse... "we can't work together but we can be together..."
Is it possible for non-white comedians to do bits on anything besides stereotype voices of their race and others? This material, although funny, is getting a bit old!
It's hard to find that with all the cookie cutters and theifs running around... I hope he doesn't steal..I doubt it though he's too natural and he's having fun which means he really loves his work....An Indian Seinfeld... Ver is Krama?

At the very beginning of this stand-up Russell talks about 'gay-Indians'. Then he goes on to say his Dad thinks gay-Indians is 'wrong'.
"We should not have gay Indians"
"Dad we have a population crisis back home, we could use a few homosexuals".
It appears to me that Peters blatantly admits to having an Indian heritage.
Born, raised Canadian, so fucking what? He's Indian.
For your own benefit, don't talk about cultural identity as if it is shaped only by the countries we live in.

And this is coming from a person who is foreign to the place he lives in...?
Okay, go read a psychology book and tell me that an individual is constructed by a) his nature; or b) how he is nurtured.
You must be white. Here in Australia where we celebrate ethnic diversity we don't presume that our place of residence is our ethnic identity...
Kind of like what you're saying- he was raised in an Indian Culture...
Gee, I wonder if its because he's Indian?
