If you take a connection like the one shown and break the contact, it may become easier to ionize the air than its dielectric can withstand. A breaker is usually gas operated or some other large structure that sits on the ground. This is just an example of what happens when trying to switch lines at capacity. I imagine the breaker bank would be located to the right of the transfer switch shown. The breakers require some device to control sensing and the (much more violent) disconnect force (gas, electromagnetic, or other)
