@orpheumsilva That's not true. The Edge Transport Role doesn't have to be in a DMZ. Get a hosted spam provider (Microsoft Forefront) and setup Exchange to only be able to communicate with them through firewall rules. Setup the smarthost and you're done. One server and very secure spam filtering. No DMZ or access to any of your servers which is better than having a server physically on your network accessible by everyone through DMZ.

@GameBoiye Great, thanks for the tip! Microsoft didn't have any documentation about being able to do a set up like this at the time when we wrote this solution set and produced the video.

The only thing I do not agree with is the fact that you need two servers for under 100 users. I would say that anywhere up to 50-75 users on good hardware can still be done on one server. Of course I still recommend using a Hosted Spam solution like Forefront and lockings down all SMTP traffic to only go between the exchange servers and the hosted spam provider's smarthost.

@GameBoiye Hi there. You would be right about being able to use one server if the hardware could support it, except that the Edge Transport Role needs to live in a DMZ in order to ensure mail is going in/out unimpeded. You could probably virtualize the Edge Transport server and still use a single physical server, but depending on your infrastructure that could get a bit tricky.

postfix can do as an transport edge - unfortunatly i don't know how in this scenario will work for example Outlook Anywhere

@konek2r It appears you can use Postfix in place of an Edge Transport server, however you will lose some crucial functionality like Exchange’s built-in antispam/antimalware capabilities, along with address rewriting.

Just a curious question, If we have a Postfix in place, do we still need to install edge transport or just make a same smarthost and point it to postfix?
