We attatched a metal plate (called a Chladni plate) to a metal stand. Then we used a motor with a metal head attatched to vibrate the plate at different frequencies. Just add sand and adjust the frequency to get different patterns.
If we had a stiffer plate we would've been able to get more vivid patterns at higher frequencies.

could you write the main equation for Chladny plate? is it teh Navier (Lame) equation? wave or laplace...?
