Nina does a beautiful version of this song. Johnny Rivers does this version he was the first I heard as a man singng. I never gave it a thought of a female vers. Now I am sitting here heart all swelled up...
i love how unique she is. i'm starting to really dig her. it's not the expected voice to a sound like this, which is why i like it...something different :)
I've always loved this song, but also felt like the tempo kinda drags too much. I spend the whole song wishing it was just a tiny little bit faster/edgier. Maybe that's just me though. It probably is. Lol! In any case, gosh I love this song. I get it stuck in my head so bad.
This song written by the great Jimmy Webb--he wrote "Wichita Lineman" "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". I heard him do his own brilliant version of this in a concert years ago. I don't think he recorded it. Or at least I can't find it. His version is of course the best. But the great Nina Simone comes close.
@merelyateacher WOW! You're right. It's just that I can hear a lil bit of Alicia's song in here. I guess my ears aren't as good as I thought they were. LOL Thanks Man/Lady
Roberta Flack redid this song and I have never forgotten it. I can also relate to the lyrics. I need a posting of Roberta's though. Thank you Nina for such a beautiful song.
This must be one of the best songs ever - I've loved the Four Tops version for years but Nina's version is excellent too (The Tops win out I think). First time I've heard her version - but I think its great.
Nina was such a fantastic artiste, i recently discovered her music (through the Lil Wayne sample of misunderstood)..i really love her vibe and cant stop listening to her music right now!!!!
Nina was such a fantastic artiste, i recently discovered her music (through the Lil Wayne sample of misunderstood)..i really love her vibe and cant stop listening to her music right now!!!!
I know kids turned out better listening to this, unlike my generation that grew up to thong song in the first grade, and hit me baby one more time, lol
i think its important to take into account who recorded the original but just as important to realize a later cover can be superior.
as much as i love roberta flack, the four tops and especially nina simone i think the clarence carter version is far and away the best, followed by the al wilson version.
its hard to ruin a song this good though if its performed by a talented vocalist.
Well, I have to admit that I did watch a few of her other videos of other songs and I can see her greatness. I guess I just don't care for this performance.
this beautiful song was written by the great jimmy webb every version of this song is wonderful but if you hear levi stubbs of the 4 tops sing it your gonna shed a tear its so emotional my favourite song of all time j vincent edwards
My parents bought a Nina Simone "8 Track" :) when I was about 12. Even at that age I knew that I was listening to a great person. I have loved Nina since that time. When I look back, it tell me something about myself that has lasted all of these years. It tells me that I am the same person then and now. I am an extreme liberal; that I love this nation and care about all people. I even care about those that hate me because I know that they are my brothers, even if they refuse to know.
i can say the same about me and listening to Queen. i knew that Freddi was great) and he was. my brothers and i, we've grown up; they cannot listen to Queen anymore (groudups no teenagers huh). and me - i love it so much. i rediscover Queen with my new feelings.
so i disagree - years dont just drift by (as Nina sings;), maybe it's for me
@omoroomoro wow what a great comment rally picks me up when i was feeling down if only there were more people like you,,,the world would be a far far better place xxxxx
I never heard this version before, this is good, but I prefer the other Nina Simone's version, with just her and the piano, it was a live version and it so intense and I felt her pain, that version always brings tears to my eyes.
