There are a few movie scenes that have gloriously caught me by surprise; The moment in "Bullett" when Steve McQueen's Mustang shows up in the bad guys' rear view mirror; Michael Clayton on the hill at dawn with the horses, his car in the background; The end of The Usual Suspects; The sound of Britt (James Coburn) rotating the cylinder of his gun in Magnificent Seven; and this absolutely wonderful scene from Baker Boys.
@Jazsngr,Your assessment is accurate and the analogy Xlnt.I can't argue with you on this one.Being a pianist that has performed this countless times, this stunner of a piece is a crowd pleaser, beautiful melody, rich chord changes and slow tempo, largo-adagio,at best, and enhances the most average of "singers". Makes little demands until the sustained notes at the close to deliver the obligatory vibrato. Too many random open-mic hackers choose this one because it is no stretch and is a safe bet.
@mawsley9 thanks for sharing..i like this version, would love to have been there but still prefer Michelle Pffeifer's version. i think am just a sucker for her & obviously the movie !
The most magical moment of a great movie. The reactions of the Bridges brothers's characters as they realize the "Diamond" they've just discovered is PERFECT. And their reactions reflect what the audience members are feeling. Film making at it's finest.
Much as I LOVE what Michelle brings to "More Than You Know," I have one quibble, and it's a pretty serious one: she never seems to get a full breath of air, and her phrasing suffers for it. A little more air, a touch more extension on each phrase would put the last touch on what is otherwise a WONDERFUL performance.
Tone and interpretation are ON. She OWNS the song (and Bridges' / Grusin's accompaniment is amazing!). Just a touch more air, Michelle....
Pfeiffer returned to the screen in 2007 with villainous roles in two major summer blockbusters, as Velma von Tussle in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Hairspray (2007) with John Travolta and Christopher Walken
Beautiful Beautiful Michelle..........she has been beautiful every time she has ever stepped in front of the camera !! Lets love her for the beautiful actress she is !! LOL
Jazsngr, you are an ass......or a critic. Either way, you know damn well she's a really good singer, better than most of the trash that sing today. It is called "THE WHOLE PACKAGE", and Michelle Pfeiffer really is. YOU try to perform that well as I would LOVE to see that fiasco. And remember........"if you can't say something nice, then keep your mouth closed."
Michelle sounded nice, but she's not really a singer's singer if you know what I mean. Men liked her in this movie because she was sexy and pretty. Close your eyes. If you listen to her voice and then looked up and saw someone unattractive you would not be bowled over, trust me. She is pretty and sexy and did a good job in this movie, but will never compare to Ella, Sarah, Billie and the likes and the good news is, I sincerly doubt she was trying to be!!!
two pianists just are cutting it anymore, so to keep up, they hire a singer. Both The bridges brothers play an outstanding part in this, but you'll never tire out from Michelle in the red dress on the piano scene-wow!
Yep. Fabulous Baker Boys. Michelle is so beautiful and so classy. It's a criminally insane that she hasn't won an Oscar yet. America can be clueless about it's own sometimes. We have the same problem in Canada.
IF Ella had the same arrangement, with the same technology, in the same time frame, we would not be having this discussion. Every judgment you make about Ella is in the context of recordings that are 30 - 50 years old. Then you have the entire concept of soul and no, I am not going down the road you think I am going down. For example, listen to Rosemary Clooney phrase a song toward the end of her life, That was soul.
she sings it so simple and poignant..it's amazing how talented Michelle is..has anyone here seen Barbra Streisand's Funny Lady? she sang the same song there and Michelle's version kind of reminds me of Babs singing..and being a Streisand fan, i think that's like a compliment..
I think this is beautiful. A simple and restrained and unaffected performance. As for the debate on Ella, I think Ella is one of the greats, in a league that few others can aspire to. Certainly Michelle doesn't have Ella's ability, but nevertheless, she did this song quite nicely.
hearing how other people feel about a topic, in this case Michelle Pfeiffer singing ability, can be interesting. But by your calling Beatricewashere names such as tight ass and pea brain you are ruining this for the others. And comparing BWH to George Bush.... was that really necessary? You come off sounding defensive and ignorant . If you can't avoid name calling then, I for one wish you would just please shut up.

But by your calling Beatricewashere names such as tight ass and pea brain you are ruining this for the others. And comparing BWH to George Bush.... was that really necessary? My my, Jaz, you certainly are knowledgable about the jazz world! 4- count them- 4! comments! I'll bet you could go on for days. :) Of course, you are right. I AM just a little tight ass, and there is really no justice in comparing Billie and Ella with Michelle Pfeiffer. No, much better to compare Ella with Britney Spears! I'm sure all jazz fans of taste and experience will completely agree with you on all counts. Thank you for the benefit of your wisdom. :)
Bea, once again you have missed the point in a manner george Bush missed the object of the presidency! No, she is not ella or Billie. But in that one performance, she was as good as anyone. Can she do it year end year oout? I don't know or care. I only need to know of one Debussey or one Djavan. I don't need them to repeat themselves every night to know they scored timeless classics at least once in their lives.
... and once again, yes you are a tight ass and a pea brain for making it personal. Any honest aficionado of jazz vocals will tell you the same thing I did. Ella had far more substandard outings than memorable ones. Thats just the way it goes. Billie drunkenly passed out on stage dozens of times. They are still great. But not omnipotent honey. There are far better performances of their standards by many people you have never heard of.
And I am not saying Michelle is better or worse than any one of them. What I am saying is that this day, on that day they recorded it, she was as good as any of them. Amen. Now Bea, lets go get a cup of coffee...
she is an unexpected good singer! mcuh more better than a thousands who call themself singers...sooo well done. and it is not fair to compare ella fitzgerald with this version. ella is a category herself....
I will gladly compare Michelle's masterpiece in this movie to Ella Fitzgerald. I been playing jazz for 5 decades and I saw Ella live and Billie live. Ella always made me smile, but Billie made me cry. Michelle made me do both. Please don't take from her because of sentimentality. Pfeifer rose to and exceeded all expectations and this chronicle of her enourmous talent will endure for decades. Jaz
Please don't say that. This recording in no way falls into the masterpiece category, though it sounds very nice. And it doesn't matter if you have been playing jazz for 50 years or 100; it doesn't matter who you've seen perform. Any child knows that Ms. Holiday and Ms. Fitzgerald were and are giants in the jazz world & that Ms. Pfeiffer is simply a pretty lady with a pretty voice- not even a professional musican. (Although I'm sure she would appreciate having such a diehard fan as yourself. :))
Well Bea, nice to know others are NOT allowed to voice honest opinions in your tight ass little world. Let me bring you up to date on a few things here OK? Just as there are media creations today; lasses with modest talent and gargantuan marketing press, there was then. Ella had all that. Her "talent" was B- level, her press A+ and the only thing made her a professional musician was that she was paid to do it.
continuing rebuttal to Bea... Billie never had professional musical training but had a unmistakable ability to make people FEEL SOMETHING when she opened her mouth. But being a drug addict, she could not get the great press of Ella. Neither was a god or a giant, just good for their markets. Like I said, I heard them both a lot, saw Ella live several times and when listening with my eyes closed and my "eyes" open, found her to be... boring.
more rebuttal... tell ya what, without doing a google searh, can you name five singers of the Ella Billie era who were also revered during their same period? I didn't think so. People like you think if they spout off some name everyone can recognize, it means they are knowledgable. But the truth is, Ella was the Gwyneth Paltro of her day. Sarah Vaugh, Shirley Bassey, Margaret Whiting, Peggy Lee, Nina Simone, each of these ladies was light years ahead.
last part of Bea rebuttal... and you keep referring to Michelles beauty. I don't really think she is all that pretty. But if I am in a dark room and just listening to vocal quality alone, I would take Pfeiffer over ella anyday. Not Billie, but Ella. Go learn some new names to tout as support of your knowledgable repetoire. You are missing out on an entire generation of super stellar performances by thinking the only one can be great is Brittany Spears, sorry, meant Ella Fitzgerald!
I didn't think I'd like this movie; I really did! :) But comparing Michelle Pfeiffer to Ella Fitzgerald is just crazy, you guys. MP may be a whole lot prettier, but nobody sings like Ella. (I don't expect this comment to be very popular, tho... *laughs...*
When I check out from Planet Earth and reach that Jazz Club in the Sky, Michelle will be on the stage, Lloyd from The Shining will fix the drinks, and Cheryl Ladd will work the tables - writing her number on a book of matches and discreetly slipping it in my shirt pocket.
This is the Paul Potts idea: expert musicians expect a newcomer to be a nothing and then he proves brilliant. You know: the jazz club where this shy trumpeter comes in with his crackled horn wrapped in an old newspaper, but boy does he play!
She sings this song in her first appearance in "The Fabolous Baker Boys". Ella Fitzgerald made famous the first version, but I love what Michelle does with the song.
so fashion forward, i would totally wear what she's wearing TODAY, i heart michelle!
