At the same time Bowie was drawing Trees of Life in a coke-demented trance, I was being taught Crowleyan Qabalah from a nice old Jewish guy in a record store.
I sent Tree-themed interfaith Solstice Cards that December.
1,2,3..David invents 'dance/rock', years later done by Blondie, Gary Numan, Talking Heads...but before this record, it was either you rocked or went to Disco's like Studio 54...this fucking genius is responsible for so much musical invention it's frightening...I mean, listen to Scary Monsters, he got Fripp from King Crimson to play the blues and funk, Fripp..and he sings like Gawd..my all time favorite Bowie record, still sounds brand new,
fuck...oh yeah side 2 is great for having sex to!!!
@mppaiges Not to say this isn't a great album, but Fripp was already a pretty damn eclectic performer and there had been several other artists that had messed around doing music that was both "danceable" and "rocking".
@lyonslaforet He was referring to how he used to draw the Tree of Life (he was interested in Aleister Crowley) or various other symbols that could've been dark.
I looked this up too, and found a few sources that point to this interpretation.
I was excited to get this album when it first dropped in 77...It was a complete change from what he was doing... One side of the LP is all instrumental experimental and the other is a series of cutting edge rock/a;ternative art...love Bowie...his work will forever influence the music world....:
It's a fraudulant post-modern culture; filled with fraudulant post-modern people....or as Ingmar Bergman said in his 1969 moive "Persona' ..it's all lies and Imitation..everything and everone...
@Rodjeure I love that someone who takes the name of a an artistic dilettante who contributed nothing of value to the cultural landscape, but merely acquainted himself with Coco Chanel, Nijinsky and Diaghilev, and basked in their reflected light, dares to lay charges of "mental Masturbation" against one of the most influential, yet dedicatedly prolific artists of all time in ANY media. Cocteau was a talentless, name dropping little twat, as clearly are you.
Bowie in an interview in 1980 for his Scary Mosters Album...said that in 1924 the DaDa's declared that Art is Dead. So what the hell can you do? After this? I mean you cant get anymore radical than that..., and all any artist can do since, is reinterpret what has already been done in new or meaningful way. People today refuse to acknowledge this; it's dishonest, and it shows how venal and corrupt people are today...
I want MORE! I want total filthy desperation! I want him to go back in time & in his younger voice, record a dirty, psychotic, vengeful, sick, sexy version. Er, sexIER version. :D
it must be nice to be perfect.

The snare drum in this track is being proccessed through an Eventide Harmonizer which was a very new invention at the time.

Contrary to what some other people have said on here, I think the song's shortness is what's makes it powerful. It works great on Low.
