Do people not see the conflict of interest a corporation has in telling you this when you're hired?
Furthermore, does a person getting hired at a low-wage retail job really give a good goddamn if Target does better than Wal-Mart across the street? No, and they shouldn't.
People have no idea of class consciousness, they identify with the business for their own ego.
If a target employee union does form (its happend multiple times recently). They just simply close the target store in the area (its happend everytime a union has formed). insted of having to deal with a union and those pesky employee rights.
no wonder why the employees treat customers so bad.try calling their offshore customer service if you can understand their english your a better translator than i am.
I worked in a Factory for 2 years and the Union did nothing but protect anyone who was not an ass kisser. The Union Presadent did nothing to represent the workers. The Vice Presadent ran the union like it was a fucking Army he sold out to the company. If you were not related or a friend of the VP or the Presadent they did little to defend the emploees. The stewards and Greevence people did little to help out as well with any issues. I found that the more money I made the more in dues they took.
The union has become what they were formed to fight against, they lie to the membership and steal from them, they intimidate them and harass any member who disagrees with the leadership. The International turns a blind eye to this corruption.
Yup Target workers, you don't need workplace protections. Lose a finger on the job because of faulty equipment and report it to OSHA? Your fired! Don't like not getting paid for hours you actually worked and report it? Your fired!
The anti-union ignorance I see and hear from people every day just outlines the careless stupidity in ignoring the history of labor in this country.
I was planning on shopping at Target today but after seeing this I decided I was not going to shop at Target. Instead I went to the UNION grocery store, and got the stuff I needed from them.
Wait, unions are killing America, but the rich increasing their pay at double, triple, or more, with golden parachutes where they can drive a company into the ground and still get paid enough to live 20 lifetimes HELPS America?
Anybody that believes that is mentally and morally defective.
I want somebody to tell me where in the Bible, God says "Damn the poor. Let the rich lead you to paradise!"
Tired of having the Bible in words and Satanism in act forced upon me by the GOP.
@TrafalgarZero Capitalism, as it exists today, isn't capitalism. And capitalism isn't a law, it's a philosophy. And if it does have laws, and those laws are that we have to bow to the wealthy, exempt them from all other law and responsibility, and revere them as living gods, then that kind of "capitalism" defies the word of God, you know, the words that the right wing claims to be the only followers of?
Now, if right wingers admitted they were Satanists, at least they wouldn't be hypocrites!
My history classes didn't involve union indoctrination.
Union membership may be a sign of a strong or weak economy but your idea that unions are the reason for a strong or weak economy is absurd. You're ignoring world events, policies, and politics.
@TrafalgarZero --My history classes didn't involve union indoctrination.--
It's historical fact that we had far stronger unions and a far stronger middle class in the 1950's. But you have to ignore this reality to justify your opinion.
Considering forced union states exist it is easy to see why union membership increases when the economy gets better. Unions aren't the keystone to a great economy, rather unions change with the economy not vice versa.
I know why unions originally existed, but to insinuate unions still stand for their original purposes is the fundamental flaw in current unions. I don't contest unions were always bad, but I believe unions are currently bad.
@TrafalgarZero It sounds like the answer you're saying is that Unions need to return to their roots. Because I'm sure we both know we can't depend on corporations to give the average American a fair deal in the work force. That's why Unions existed in the first place. We both know that corporate greed needs to be checked.
We both know that corporations can and will take advantage of Americans in this lousy economy.
I think we both differ on our opinion on "fair deal." Right to Work states are not ripe with work place deaths or injuries and right to work states are not driving away business. Businesses are going to move to Right to Work states from forced union states. If the NLRB has their way businesses will just move to another country.
And I find it humorous that when people talk about the good points of unions it refers back to over half a century ago. Unions did good things, DECADES AGO.
@TrafalgarZero Is there any proof that right to work states have a better economy? I doubt you'll find any study saying that.
It sounds like you're making the point that Unions need to return to their roots. Because corporate greed is a very huge problem in the US right now, and we need checks and balances.
Your failure to admit there's massive amounts of corporate greed out there, will prove you're on the side of the corporatsits and not with the American people. So you'll ignore this.
@TrafalgarZero --Considering forced union states exist it is easy to see why union membership increases when the economy gets better.--
This sounds like either revisionist history, or you admitting that Unions have no impact on the economy either way.
Tell me what side would have you been on during the labor movement during the great depression? Would you side with millions of your countrymen, or with corporate greed?
If the answer is corporate greed, you'll duck the question.

which conflicts what you said earlier here: ---Unions are killing America because they ignore and defy the laws of capitalism.--
@TrafalgarZero if unions were so bad, then the economy would improve as union membership declined.
or were you right the other time that the level of union membership has no bearing on the economy. Which makes a great case that we should have more unions, since they exist to look out for what's best of workers. something CEO and management are unwilling to do.
Do you even know why unions existed in the first place? I doubt you know your history about the labor movement during the depression

LOL... you mean like Ohio? Michigan?? How about Colorado, Nevada.... i can go on if you can. what unions are doing is securing paychecks for union reps, while finding fights even they know they can not win to run up union lawyer fees, union dues, and sending jobs out of the country. biggest unions, teamsters... semi-safe. manufacturing, leaving the US in droves, teachers, spends 31% of budget on legal fees protecting teachers who deserve to be fired,
Unions work hard to represent everyone especially the vulnerable. Check all the non-unionised states and find out how their middle class statuses are shrinking
What opponents of unions are doing is to horde money for themselves and starve workers. But what I find strange is middle class people who have been tricked to believe that their unions hurt them. That their unions are robbing them to help lazy people, the big guy is robbing you by dividing you guys, wake up
argue all day, the last 11 years has more than enough data to support this. unions has made the lazy find a home, and those who honestly want to work hard to make a living get hand cuffed to protect the lazy.
@ccman0224 I'm calling BS on this. I think the biggest thing to screw up the economy and the middle class in the last 11 years has been deregulation and speculation, not unions. It's no coincidence that as union membership has declined, so has the middle class. By your logic, the last 11 years should have seen a boom in union membership, not a decline as has been the class. So please, explain to me how fewer people are causing more trouble than before? Cue right-wing talking point in 3, 2, 1...
@TrafalgarZero True, and he has done less than many of us have hoped. But the fact of the matter is that deregulation occurred under G W Bush, not Obama. And yes, I know that Clinton wasn't perfect either, I have my gripes with him as well on certain things. I'm also not one of those naive daydreamers who thinks Obama is some saint and will fix everything. But, so far It's been 2+ years, and in a rough political and economic climate to put it mildly. GWB had 8 years to really screw things up.
It's wrong to pin the failings of 2+ years of Obama on 8 years of GWB. Both have their failings and successes but blaming GWB like people do is avoiding the failure of Obama's policies, such as the stimulus.
There is a difference between drawing conclusions on what you think is happening based on preferences and based on historical precedence. Just because you call something reality it doesn't make it real for anyone else, even others may see it as a delusion.
@TrafalgarZero The stimulus did not fail. It worked, albeit not in any extraordinary way...it was not big enough, nor did it accomplish enough. As I stated previously, a lot of this has to do with the political climate. The party of "no" combined with weak-kneed democrats has stymied real progress time and again...healthcare, repealing the Bush tax cuts, and so on. It's going to take more than 2+ years to undue the damage of the preceding 8, especially in this political climate.
@TrafalgarZero blaming the Democrats for the economy is the exact same thing as saying that the GOP is not a party of personal responsibility and not worth voting for.
The only valid point you can make is that both parties are broken and we need a 3rd party. Is that what you're saying? If so, what 3rd party should we all support?
you have a wage that will be shipped south of the border or to china. thank the Clintons for opening the market. Unions negotiation tactics are 'gimme more so i can justify my existance'... while whining that they forced wages above production costs forcing your job to eventually be out sourced or your company to close shop.
Being Union all of my working life, this is a complete joke. Talk about a total bunch of bullshit being spewed. Why are they so afraid of collective bargaining? And those laws they said are on the books now, which makes unions obsolete, are under attack daily by businesses like Target. I can not believe they make their employees sit and watch this! I am Union, I make a wage I can live on I have health insurance I have a pension and I have an annuity. All of this through collective barging!
@carynstl Did you personally bargain collectively for your health insurance, pension and annuity? No? I didn't think so. Unions are for spineless Democrats that don't have the balls to stand up to management.
@carynstl Wow. I've never heard that insult before. I'm neither a retard nor wear diapers. My screen name, like the vast majority of computer screen names, is a joke....like your politics. Have a nice day. :-D Oh, before I forget....thanks for proving my point you fuckin' jackwagon.
@ phil, 50 - 100 years ago, unions did some good. not much, mostly they acted like Mafia thugs. not saying big business were angels, but still. as teddy roosevelt said, business is organizing and labor better, but if business gives a fair deal they too shall be granted one. Unions do not keep their side of this agreement. still to this day (look at teachers union in DC for an example)
When union members start earning the same as the private sector I'll believe in the notion that the unions are for workers rights. As I see it the Unions have morphed into parasitic organizations. Unions capitalize on capitalism and then turn around and support political figures who dislike capitalism but support unions.
I realized I was going on a diatribe, and decided to remove my rant.
To summarize what I was getting at: Unions are not perfect, and there are those that have caused harm to either workers, businesses, or both. But, overwhelmingly the labor movement has done much more good for the American worker and American business than harm. I am so sick of people citing the exceptions as if they are the rule, characterizing all unions as the same because of the actions of some.
Actually that was informative and not necissarily wrong. Unions drive up prices, are anti-commerce, anti-customer service, and never will you see a union do whats best for business. hell rarely do you see a union do whats best for their members. Buggy whip of labor, 50 years out dated, have destroyed the blue collar middle class as much as NAFTA, actually was reason NAFTA was signed.
I worked for Target for more than 20 years (from college on...). We were told to report any Union-organizing to Management. I don't recall any in the stores I worked, but I do recall Regional going into panic-mode whenever a store in the area had whispers of Unionizing. We (the "Team Members") nodded when Management "warned" us about possible Union canvassing in the area, but to be honest, I'd say the majority of us Team Members would have signed up rather quickly.
@oopyssic Here's what people tend to forget..Just because a Union wants to get into Target doesn't mean that Union WILL get into Target. Target is a privately run corporation. They don't have to honor any Union contract. They can tell the Unions to piss off and get rid of those employees who will sign up for Union representation. If the Unions could just waltz right into places like Target, places like Target would already be Unionized.
yeah, this is how target makes sure they keep everyone at part time status with crappy- if any- insurance options. target wants to keep unions out so that they can keep their workers at low wages, permanent part time status, abusive management policies. bunch of bullshit
Do people not see the conflict of interest a corporation has in telling you this when you're hired?
Furthermore, does a person getting hired at a low-wage retail job really give a good goddamn if Target does better than Wal-Mart across the street? No, and they shouldn't.
