@catfightsarecool Nope, all real instruments. Madlib does most of the stuff, don't think he plays any horns/guitar though, which are played by others.
@noiz87 I am sure. Madlib composed many of these pieces with a jazz group compiled by himself. Some of the tracks under the Yesterday's New Quintet & Sound Directions monikers are remakes, or remixes, or other jazz songs. This I think is an orginal composition.
Thanks for posting this. I think Madlib is at is best when he's working with a well defined melody--like on this song, or Stevie Wonder's "I Am Singing." If anyone knows of other Madlib covers in that vein, let me know.
(By the way, I recorded Tom Jobim's bossa nova song "Wave" in the style of YNQ. It's not nearly as good as Madlib's work, but if you like this kind of stuff you might find it interesting. It's posted on my channel.
I'm still gathering all his work, there's a lot to get :D that cat madlib is keeping busy all the time, someone should freeze him for a year or something :)
Hardly, might be really really slight oscillations due to everything being hand-put together and him being stoned, but most of his beats are on-beat, only heard a few ones that had errors. This ain't one of them, I've heard the track quite a few times. In the end, drums are the beat, beat can't be off beat, only off-melody (melody being the culprit :) )

@catfightsarecool Madlib Does His YNQ Shit Live Mostly. He Does Setup Basslines To Follow Though, But It Acts More Of Like A Metronome.

@catfightsarecool Hmm, not sure.
There are people here (like Munoz783) who are more educated in the ways of the Mad One :)

@poppycop Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're talking about "real" instruments here, now that I've heard more of Madlib's jazz work and projects :)

umm i'm confused..is the alias for this song sound directions or yesterday's new quintet?
xXunt0uchableXx 2 years ago
It's Sound Directions. I've put the title ynquintet to give the song more listens, people are more familiar with YNQ project :)

He's sampled/covered multiple Bobbi Humphrey songs from the same album, so why not, lol
