I think Tony misrepresented himself to his children , he was not the man he made himself out to be.....I liked him but would not want him for a father....
@TheNewEmphinix I think that was one point Chase was trying to make with the show. At first Meadow always felt she had the moral high ground. In the end she became a lawyer and defended her dad and his business every chance she could. Carmela was told by the Jewish psychiatrist to leave Tony who warned her she would be his accomplice if she stayed with him. One by one Chase showed how all these characters were corrupted. The only person who had any real morals in the show was Charmaine Bucco.
@ardbastard1 I suppose you could look at it that way but Melfi did defend Tony at times and continued to work with him even though she knew it was never going to solve anything. She was ready to move him on to behaviour mod before she was raped but decided to keep him on as a patient because it served her own interest at the time.
@djgraememaclean Melfi took Tony on in the first place out of her personal curiosity for psychiatric-insight into the study of the criminal & sociopathic mind & she, it appeared, didn't move him on to offer security & comfort to herself following the rape, but there's nothing wrong with that; especially as she never revealed to Tony what had happened, which she new would've ensured she got vengeance, but it would've been criminal, so she took a moral stand - the most significant of the series.
@ardbastard1 She took a moral stand but by that point she was (in a sense) using him for her own interests. He offered to go to behaviour mod and she said no after she told him for weeks that was the only thing that would help him. She kept him around because she wanted him there and it had nothing to do with helping him or improving his life. If that was the case she'd have sent him to behaviour mod. Keeping him on only served to satisfy her curiosity. I do agree with what your saying though.
@djgraememaclean It would've been interesting to see if Tony actually would've let Dr Melfi send him onto behavioural-modification therapy; I'm pretty unconvinced he would've even shown up to the sessions if she had actually referred him. You do know though that Melfi was only referring Tony, not because she felt he could really benefit from it, but because her ex-husband advised her to pass him off onto someone else, right? I disagree that she went against her code of ethic's though, sorry.
I don't find Charmaine particularily moral. As I recall she was motivated to avoid involvment with the Sopranos more through fear then anything else. She was quick to say she would take Arties kids in the divorce.

@djgraememaclean very good insight. It shows just how easily one can be corrupted by evil people!

@djgraememaclean Wasn't Dr Melfi the moral-backbone of the show? She was never corrupted.
