have you noticed this game acts more like a prototype for street fighter 2 like the ninja with claw later I think they made vega and in one thing I read hes supposedly a spanish ninja or at least his style then you have gen from alpha and street fighter four birdie was in alpha the boxer without gloves I think was supposed to be balrog and sagat never until the cartoon or anime sagat doesn't show damage from your uppercut for his scar. the moves were kind of hard to do but made the game easy.

I love Street Fighter II and its derivatives - it's a classic.

As such, I tried to like the original.

But I found it to be one of the worst 1-1 fighters I've ever played. Almost as bad as Dragon Ball Z.

You described this as if it was the original fighting game. You are out by 3 years - that would be 1984's Karate Champ which also stars karate masters who were white and red costumes. That's classic!

Street Fighter 1 had two pressure pads.

How hard you hit them determined how hard the punch or kick was.

Obviously, as they wore out, they became less responsive and people injured themselves trying to get the hard punches in - a lawyer's dream ...

And so - the pads were removed and 6 buttons added instead for degree of severity, 3 x low-medium-hard for each of the punch and kick pressure pads.

Hence, the 6 button format is this game's only contribution to originality.

Made in 1984, its name is "Karate Champ"

The machine's demo mode had two identical karate characters - one in white, one in red (Ryu? Ken?) fighting on a log (level 4 in the game, later copied by Mortal Kombat's own level 4 [spike pit])

Doing special moves is not so hard, you just have to hold the button and once you've completed the usual sequence, release the button and press it again, by the way the Tatsumaki-Sempu-Kiaku (Hurricane Kicks) are also in the game, I should know since I own this game on Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 and I pulled it off, tons of times!

I wish Capcom would do a remake of this game with updated graphics obviously and vastly improved gameplay. Maybe flesh out the story more as well and allow the ability to play as any of the characters. The first Street Fighter was ok but the game could have been so much better... even in 1987 or whenever the game was released.

BTW, Ryu is pronounced Re-you. Sagat is Sah-gAt, not Saget. And well, Shoryuken = rising dragon fist, not tiger uppercut.

i used to play for hours this game when i was a child_i think is extremely awesome _you really feel the kicks and punchs of the enemy_and when you can execute the fireball and uppercut you feel something incredible_ the energy of the enemy goes down drastically..

This game was tuff, apparently the original arcade version had pressure pads on the buttons so the harder you hit the button, the harder the punch.

This was the most realistic streetfighter game, the problem with the sequals is they cheapened the special moves by making them too easy to pull off and causing less damage, a bit like what this reviewer pointed out. Despite that this was the next generation of things to come.

It's not a Tiger Uppercut, it's called a Shoryuken. The Tiger Uppercut is Sagat's uppercut, not Ryu's and Ken's.

By the way, the trick to beating Mike and Birdie is to duck and attack...for some reason, they have trouble hitting you when you duck.

i too nailed birdie with one dragon punch way back in arcade day, no one ever believed me that it was possible. the game gave you a cense of power especially as a 10 yr old at the time and school fights were great to practise on your upper cuts, just like in the game.
