  • Tube screamers are great!! Even on a nice solid-state. Most solid-state amps emulate to their best ability a tube amp! Just have to set it the way you like it! Tube screamers are great cuz you can set them for any genre of music...kinda like fender telecasters ..they'll go with anything pretty well! Get this pedal doesn't matter on the amp! Get a ibanez jet driver a big muff pi with wicker switch a tuner by boss and a boss dd-7 ...and then whatever else you want! Great board right there!

  • how does this compare to a tubescreamer? I like tubescreamers but I hate that midrange hump that they have

  • @8thEastTexasBlues this is a tubescreamer

  • its funny that ppl care what op amp is in it. it makes little to no difference and i bet 99% of people couldnt tell the difference if you swapped it out for another.

  • I hate guitar reviews playing metal! rock is much more autentic and you can really hear and fill the notes

  • @zeitlin rock and metal are both great, its just about taste really, but metal is better for OD pedal reviews because the metal sound is far more complex where as the rock tone is just a nice crunchy tube amp :).

  • guys Thumb up this vid if you want to listen this pedal on metal!!!!

just type in blackstar ht5 playthrough this guy has the best reviews for guitar stuff so go and check it out and each vid that you think that they dont review this pedal good enough just copy paste this comment come on do it!

  • This? or the OD-9?

  • Picked this beast up a month ago to pair with my krank rev and Mesa recto cab. Amazing. I was able to roll my gain back on my head which tightened up my sound massively! I play in a progressive deathcore ish band and my gain knob is at like noon. Still heavy as hell, and improved dynamics. Imagine that :D but this now

  • sounds like heaven

  • dudes every serious musician uses this pedal, even the metal guys, i have two. its the kidies who use pedals like the metal zone that dont get how to use this effectively. you dont need a high gain ultra distortion ubber metal pedal to get a great metal tone... you just need a tube amp and a tubescreamer or a boost for that matter to give it some balls PGS as alway great reviews and great gear gotta love PDX ORE. :)

  • @icedteaburst I am what you would call a "little Kiddie" Can't afford a good tube amp, so would you say this pedal is worth it or should I wait till I have some money to get a metal tone, at the moment I use a heavy Metal pedal, For what I do it works....Is this a possiblity or do i need a tube amp?

  • @Ug0td0uged Get a reasonably good solid state practice amp like a Kustom KGA10FX, Roland Microcube, Marshall MG, stay clear of line 6 spiders.

Get this pedal and good quality leads (Series X leads on ebay are excellent). I wouldn't put the OD808 gain more than 12oclock. To do the level, put your amp on clean, keep picking at your low E, turn the OD808 on and off and turn the level knob until it's level with your amp volume. Then put the amps distortion on. 'Tone' is up to you. Hope that helps.

  • @Ug0td0uged A Peavey 6505 1X12 combo is a great tube amp for heavy metal. It's only about $600. Just my opinion though.

  • This pedal is great. Xlnt overdrive tones.

  • Guys, can you do a new demo of this with a better audio?? it would be awesome

  • i don't get what this pedal is for and why should i get it?

  • @xXHardc0rExFaNXx1 It's an overdrive pedal. What's to get?

  • I love this pedal. Put in front of an Orange or some other classic british amp and have crunchy, raunchy tones. Or, put it in front of a 5150 or a Recto and blow down your wall!

  • @cerox16

Yeah man it's kinda in once sense exactly meant for that. There's a video for this pedal being used by the killswitch guys and they use it as a boost. Whatch that video to get their setting of what they use on that pedal.

  • would this pedal be good for like solo boosts on a hi-gain amp?

  • Dudes from trivium use these pedals

  • @Ricsic6 As do Killswitch :D

  • @Ricsic6 As do Sylosis! :D

  • Is this pedal good for pushing a tube amp from hard rock to metal?

  • I got the 250,000th view.

  • @GuitarBlues3 I got the 251,038th view. I just though you should know.

  • TDWP

  • I have his overdrive pedal, its really amazing. Its sound is a king above any other distortion pedal, but do not expect very much overdrive.

  • What is the recomended Overdrive for u2 type tones?

  • I bet you could get some good AC DC sounds from this.

  • @journeyquest1 you can definitely !

  • Pro Guitar Shop Theme song at 0:28 lol

  • uh nevermind..guess I didnt hear that part in the video. G&L Comanche into a 65 Soho...IMO with that combination, you could be plugging a cow patty as a overdrive pedal and still sound great.

  • is the same as the ibanez ts10?

  • No, this is much more of clean/boost type OD. The TS9 is much closer to the TS9.

  • PLAY SOME FUCKING METAL

  • @NickWayne100 Greatest comment ever ! And i'm fucking serious bro =D

  • @NickWayne100 stop playing so much metal....it seems to make you agressive...

  • @NickWayne100 This is an Overdrive PEdal and not a fucking Distortion Pedal!

  • @socccero

The metal band Iron Maiden used the Tube Screamer, an overdrive pedal, for pretty much all, if not all, of their songs.

  • @NickWayne100 wrong pedal for that, why do people always ask"can it do metal" the market is flooded with amps and pedals tha can do that, a line 6 will do fine for most metal, the modern metal tone dosent have the nuances of other styles and is fairly easy to achieve with scooped mids and lots of gain

  • wich is the difference beetween od 808 and od9?please help

  • hey GPS do you have any good overdrive pedals that are true bypass and are also cheap. i run my guitar into a Super Overdrive (boss SD-1) into a Blues Driver (boss BD-2.) the blues driver sounds great by itself, but when i have the SD-1 in front it messes with the signal and my distortion gets 'a little' muddy. is that because it's not true bypass? or because they're boss pedals. other than that everything else on there after the boss pedals are true bypass.

  • is this true bypass

  • @gaaramonkeyx

Yeap. They built the original TS808's for Ibanez and the Maxon one sounds nicer, comes with true bypass, and is less expensive.

  • I'm really want to buy this off your website but I'm curious: is this pedal true bypass? I'll probably buy it either way but I'm kinda picky about these things lol

  • Goddammit AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAnddddY!

  • 2:27 it sounds good

  • this demonstration it's a shit.....

  • @TheBardothodol - Grazie!

    -PGS

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos Parlate anche italiano :) ? (aside from english you speak italian?) GREAT DEMO!

  • @giorgiocesaroni se hai bisogno di spiegazioni sono disponibile

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos HAHA what a guy lol

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos

    Is Maxon OD-808 true bypass?

    Thanks

  • @amihol No

  • @TheBardothodol

At least it's just a single shit.

  • @shippensbia

    LOL

  • @TheBardothodol then why dont YOU make a demo?

  • gotta give Andy credit, he has to play a lot of different riffs for all these pedals

  • Sound great but I'd go with Cusack screamer any day.

More drive, more transparency, more music out of the pedal.

  • It sounds great.

  • I used to own this pedal. Unfortunately, I sold it. It was the best tube screamer type pedal I've ever used or owned.. I'll probably buy another one soon.

  • i can't choose between this and the retro sonic 808, but im leaning towerds this... :)

  • hands down one of the best overdrive pedals out there. very natural sounding. great for boost. i actually like this better than the current ts808 out there. i'm one satisfied fella!!

  • Overdrive Pro or OD-808 Overdrive? They both sound great but I can only afford to get one.

  • @nickusa317 Try them both a/b on your setup if you can....That's the only way to know for sure.....I however found the Maxon OD808 to be the quietest and best sounding on my Orange Thunderverb in a 4x12 mesa cab w/ Celestian V30's

  • I own this pedal, i fucking love it! I a/b'd this against the current production line Ibanez TS808 with the same exact guitar and amp, and this one definitely beat it out in my personal opinion. I like that it doesn't color your tone, it just adds some very natural sounding overdrive.

  • great pedal... beats ts808 any day.... it has got a great boost.

  • @Mut5lu особенно если ты муд..... четкий пацан

  • Ibanez TS808 or this? Any input appreciated.

  • What is the difference between this and an Ibanez 808? Is it the same pedal in a different box? I've played both, and haven't really noticed a difference.

  • @sixstainless maxon used to be the manufacturer for Ibanez until 2002 or something, so yeah there's no difference.

  • Mighty pricey clean boost though. If that's what you're going after an MXR Microamp is the ticket.

  • Hi andy! How would this work to boost a big muff ? i use a Vox AC15 cc1

  • @blueberryacid1 since andy did not respond to you i suggest that this pedal will work fine. but if you don't mind spending an extra 10 or 20 bucks, get the fulltone mosfet overdrive 2 pedal. this pedal has a boost switch that you can control. if you get to much feed back and noise with the big muff, get a mxr noisegate pedal. keep rock'n bro!

  • Hell, If you had the ultimate tone, then everyone would have it and it wouldnt be the ultimate anymore. You would then go out and get a new electronic amp and want another tone. Tone is in your fingers.

  • i said it before and ill say it again...I'll NEVER stop playing with toys! ;-)

  • Guys I have an Engl Powerball head, Jackson SL2H and I would like to have a nice smooth lead tone.. and I wanna know how would this pedal work?

  • @HeavyThrashGuitar

dude i have it and play djenty shit and this pedal is the sickest.

    play with it

  • @HeavyThrashGuitar throw this on top of your distorted tone on the engl it makes it more gainier or boost more gain to your solos......depending on what you want it for it just put it on top your drive channel

  • @adamw98 a boost on a engl wont work

  • @yooxa Would you mind telling us all why?

  • Wow.

  • Which is better this or the TS9 tube screamer?

  • is this true bypass?

  • @thmsrojo yes it is

  • @thmsrojo no it is not, but the od9 is true bypass

  • 0 16 is that from "You never give me your money"?

  • The guy from Killswitch is most likely using this to tighten up his sound, not for the over all distortion. He is probably using his amp distortion. I use my maxon with the OD at 0, level at the mid and the balance is always depending on what amp I am playing through depending on if it is a dark amp or a bright one. I play an orange, so I keep the balance about midway through. It isn't meant to be a main source of OD for metal, rather just to tighten up your sound.

  • So what does Overdrive do? It sounds like distortion( a little).

  • oh, for metal stile you just have to add a bunch of metal pedals alongside this one!

  • how is this used for metal? because i know that adam d from killswitch uses it but it doesnt seem like it will match his sound :/

  • he uses it to push his already distorted tone its not his main drive sound just a boost

  • A lot of metal players use these sort of pedals as a further boost for their already driven amp. If you want a killswitch sound look at a mesa triple rectified or similar and then one of these pedals.

  • @ TombstoneCity26

Adam D plays through high gain tube amps...normally Mesa Rectifiers, Peavey 5150's, Diezel's, etc...

So he gets 90% of his gain from the amps. He just uses the Maxon for a little extra gain boost on the top and to tighten up his sound a little bit

  • You need to run it to a overdriven amp or with one other overdrive/boost pedal to get more distortion..

  • lol everyone uses these. they warm and clean up your tone a bit more and push your sound a bit more. metal players use it, blues players use it, for example the only stompbox distortion stevie ray vaughan ever used was 2 tube screamers

  • I've been gigging for 2 years with this pedal. Even in the most crappy little venues, this thing delivered.

  • What's the best overdrive ever??

  • The one you like best dude, theres no ultimate in tone.

  • @poetofdamnation bet there is somewhere... some guy in his shed playing a prototype going OH MY GOD.... lol..

  • tonemonk seed of life

  • Well.. there are some that are very hyped.. I'm not sure about if they really is thaat good..

But check out, the tim/timmy pedal, Landgraff DO, Analogman King of tone (KOT), Klon, Hermida Zendrive and so one..

    There are millions of them..

I like the Boss BD-2 very much.. Going to test the KOT and Timmy to sometime..

Then are there thousends of great TS clones to :)

  • i bought this pedal a while ago... this through my lonestar sounds epic...

  • why do Maxon pedals look like Ibanez pedals?

  • Ibanez had Maxon building their pedals back in the day.

  • @theoriginalmrsm you mean back in the old days? Back in the day is pretty damn vague ins't it? I mean back in what day? Could be yesterday, a week or maybe 20 years...who the fuck knows?

  • @theoriginalmrsm so essentially, is the od808 the same as the ibanez ts808?

  • @hanjo1505 it is pretty much the same thing but the maxon has a bit more gain, like for example if say the Ibanez is an overdrive on steroids, then the maxon is the one on cocaine

  • @44eelz Maxon used to make pedals for Ibanez until the late 90's early 2000's.

  • Umm if your worried that it's not true bypass that shouldn't be a problem, because non true bypass pedals help to correct the sound change when you use really long cables to your amp.

  • i think this is better than the ts808. the ts9 and the od9 are the same.

  • is the TS9 the same as this or just the ts808??

  • not the same. the ts9 is more nasal and has a cutting mid that can be a little harsh. also it eats more bass. i have both and use them for different purposes.

  • i can tell all that remains used this on their album overcome. when i listen to their songs i can hear the "creamy" sound of the od808 around the notes. they use peavey amps so their tone is so metal. this pedal really is so creamy, i want one

  • like EVERY metalcore band uses this pedal. ATR, KSE, AILD, TDWP, ABR that's why they all have great tone

  • win

  • @hate420breed Yea those acronums get to us all some times i had a good laugh

cause i know how it pisses me off aswel

  • is this the thing that makes the sound of an electric guitar explodes?

  • since it's not a true bypass, will it affect my tone when it's not on?

    thanks

  • I've got one and it doesn't affect my tone at all when not on =)

    Sounds amazing when it's on...

  • Almost no modern pedals affect the tone anymore. It's just a myth perpetrated buy vintage salesmen and gullible believers who repeat what they heard without for themselves trying.

  • you've obviously never played through any BOSS distortion pedals or a Crybaby Wah. those things suck your tone dry.

  • how so?

  • Depends, are you gonna be turning it on and using it with your guitar? Then yes, thats what it's built to do. :-)

  • i tried it... it was so good with the lonestar i tried it with that i bought the amp... i just need to go back to get the maxon!

  • Hey, I have this pedal and use it regularly on my board. I haven't noticed any difference in the sound. It's probably the best distortion pedal I've owned! Check out my channel for another review. Hope that helped

  • i just got one of these to boost my vox night train when I want to play heavier stuff at lower volumes, and I gotta say I am completely blown away. Probably the best piece of equipment I've ever bought (besides my amp), it doesn't give a crappy solid state like distortion boost or anything like that (like with other dist pedals I've owned), instead it accentuates the amps tube distortion and makes it sound smoother, creamier and down right sexier! Best overdrive/distortion pedal I've ever owned

  • Lets fase it the maxon OD 808 was first then came the ibanez TS 808 hence the same model number. Maxon made the tube screamer for Ibanez. I had a Maxon before there was a TS 808. This is a sweet pedal, I like it and the TS9. Also, the way I've always said it is if it drives the amp it plugs into the amp, if it's a time base pedal it plugs to the FX loop if your amp has one, if not it would go in front of the chain behind the wah and overdrive. I think the overdrive helps push it.

  • Actually, the first 808 pedal was named "Ibanez TS-808" but at that time it was manufactured by Maxon.

The "Maxon OD-808" didn't exist back then, but it's essentially the same pedal as the Ibanez TS-808 of the 60s

The current Ibanez TS-808 isn't as historically correct as this one, so it's a great alternative to getting an old Ibanez TS-808

  • Those 808's of the 60's rule! Jimi Hendrix used one at Woodstock!

  • Let's FACE it you can't spell.

  • Most of the time it's like this:

    Guitar>Wah pedal>Overdrive>distortion> Amp

You put any "time based" effects, like delay, chorus, flange, ect. in the effects loop of a high gain/mild gain amp.

If yuor amp is clean and you don't have an effects loop then just Guitar>Wah>overdrive>distortion>delay/other time based effects> AMP

  • everyone keeps arguing about whether to put this in the loop or not and whether it works for metal or not...put it in front. And no it wont do metal in front of a fender deluxe reverb..but it sure as hell will in front of a mesa rec/ peavey 6505/ rivera knucklehead. etc..used as a boost.. Jon Donais uses one and he sounds metal to me.

  • jordan from as i lay dying uses it with a mesaboogie

  • Best boost for metal ever.

  • Use to have a Ibanez TS9 reissue & keeley modded TS9. THEN I heard a friends Maxon OD 808 and realized that what a "true overdrive" pedal should be.

This pedal is smoother and far more subtle (transparent) than most TS type overdrives out there IMO. All adjustments are very gradual yielding much variation (real fine tuning). The pedal is great in front of; slightly dirty amp, dist boxes (OCD), or high gain amp. You just can't lose -unless looking for metal sounds by itself.

  • Hi,

please! put a video of vop9!

    tks!

  • you can put whatever the heck you want in your effects loop. it's just that overdrive and modulation effects sound like crap in it. it's designed for effects like putting delay and reverb after the overdrive stage if your amp has an overdrive channel. get it straight guys.

  • I agree, but I wouldn't say that OD and distortion in the FX loop sounds 'bad', it just won't get you the "usual" sound that everyone else gets. If you can make music with your OD in the FX loop and people like it, more power to you. Tonal innovation and uniqueness is sorely lacking today.

  • Don't put overdrives or fuzz in FX. Only modulation and delays etc. Because if you put it in the fx loop it will not overdrive the amp

  • I think the Ibanez Tube Screamer sounds better. I'm a bit worried about what I've just read about plugging overdrive pedals into the FX loop. I've been using an MXR micro amp pedal in the loop on my Fender hot rod deluxe. Still sounds ok but do you think I may have caused any damage to the amp circuitry? I'm looking for an overdrive to give me natural valve overdrive distortion. Not sure what pedal to buy, I don't care how much it costs. I play all styles, blues, rock, metal. Please help.

  • DONT PUT OVERDRIVE PEDALS IN THE LOOP! lol ur supposed to put them in ur line in not the loop. I dont think it will damage it but the loop is designed for delay, chorus etc not overdrive. an od pedal is designed to act as a pre-pre-amp boost and if its in the loop up putting the drive in after the amp signal.

  • completely not true. the effects loop was meant to allow access to your signal path before the power amp. Having your pre-amp before your OD is perfectly fine, and may sound better then driving the front of the amp. please stop telling people things you dont understand.

  • Depends how you use an OD pedal. If you turn the output volume down and the gain up to get your distortion out of the pedal itself, it's not driving your amp in to distortion, it's sending your amp an already distorted signal. If you use it as a boost, gain down-volume up, you can put it in front to drive the preamp for preamp distortion, OR you can put it in the loop (the "line in" and "line out" are just send and return jacks, just like the loop) and drive the power tubes for power tube dist.

  • you can conneect the guitar to pedal and the output of the pedal to the Return/power amp in input

and then The Overdrive is acting as a Pre-amp... Get a Tube Driver and you can do this trick wit any solidstate you have to Get REALLL TUbe Distortion!

  • your amp is fine. keep plugging in stuff into your FX loop, and PLEASE stop listening to these idiots.

  • You probably didn't damage anything. If you put a booster in the effects loop, it'll just make everything louder. If you want natural valve sounds from a pedal, you really have to experiment. Different people like different things, but you might want to try some pedals that actually use tubes in them.

  • Here's the thing about tube amps. If you overdrive a tube amp, you are basically overloading the tubes with voltage. The caps and resistors in tube amps are usually graded for much higher voltage levels then they will ever be subjected to. The tubes themselves are bearing the brunt of the voltage thrust, so any damage is sustained by them, not the rest of the circuit. Tubes burn out quicker in an amp that is frequently pushed hard, so you have to replace the tubes more often, but IT"S WORTH IT!

  • I had a keeley mod TS808 a Maxon od9 and this maxon and this is the one i prefer. I also use a treble booster in front, flynn amps classic oc44, with these i can get blues and heavy rock but not metal, for that I have a subdecay blackstar. To get all your tones you may need 2 pedals or a dual pedal like the jeckel & hyde

  • whats better the ibanez tube screamer or this Maxon OD-808?

  • I prefer the Maxon

  • im probably more of a retard, i just ordered one, where do you plug it into?

just straight from the guitar, and into the input of the amp?

or on the back, i have a 6505+ and theres 2 FX loop sockets on the back, do i use them?

  • CHRIS YOU FOOL

you couldve just asked me that

yeah lots of amps have FX send/return things on em for people who want just the instrument to go to the input and the FX through those

but you can just your guitar straight into the pedal and then the pedal to the amp

same results, just depends on what setup you prefer

  • Go from the guitar to the pedal to the input dawg.

  • through the front

  • overdrive pedals usually go between your guitar and amp. that's not to say you won't like it in your effects loop, though!

  • Guitar ---> Pedal In, Pedal Out --->Amplifier Input

NEVER plug a drive pedal to the FX loop. It will damage the amps circuitry.

  • no it doesnt. you have no idea what your talking about.

  • It won't damage the circuitry at all.

  • You can't plug an overdrive, a distortion or a fuzz in the FX loop. You can only plug modulation effects like chorus, vibrato, flanger, phaser, delay, reverb, etc.

  • no, plug your guitar into the pedal then into the front of your peavey, thats if you are trying to boost your amp

  • What is the first song he plays?

  • OD808 by far.

  • Which is better? This or the od808?

  • this is the od808

  • ur right (im stupid :D) i meant this or the od9

  • It's really what you think that matters.

But generally I would say OD808 is the better one.

  • is this and the OD-9 true bypass?

  • yes

  • ummmm....no. this is not true bypass.

  • what does true bypass means?

  • does this od pedal still have a strong low end?

  • check out the alberta by T-rex if you want the low end :-). this one is great too. I have one and use it a lot! It's one of the most usable sounds I've heard

  • low overdrive boost? would you be thinking of a clean boost that gives you more volume with out driving your amp , an overdrive boost will drive your amp to saturation
