if i remember correctly Iwo Jima was the one and only battle in the pacific where the US had more casualties than the IJA. (observe casualties = dead and wounded not just dead)
@Reaper111089 As i responded to mrmetal, read about the battle for Wake Atoll in the beginning of the war. 400 Marines beat the snot out of the Japanese twice before having to surrender.
@Toddinfantry oh no here we go again, this is not about who can beat the snot out of each other better, that kind of talk is irresponsible and likely fuel feelings of animosity between Americans and Japanese. This is a doc that appears to glorify the the 'American heroic' slaughter of 20,000 'japs' (hardly any Japanese soldiers are even named or the survivors interviewed) You need to watch "Letters from Iwo Jima" for some balanced perspective about the battle of Iwo Jima.
@mrmetalcore2019 You asked specifically how would the Americans defend against great odds, I gave you a specific answer. If someone is so immature they generate animosity over my comment then they have a real problem. Sorry the victors made a little doc about they win...maybe the losers could have to. I have watched Letters and enjoyed the different side, I have also talked to Marines that were there, so I have a very good understanding of this battle.
@Toddinfantry I'm glad you watched Letters from Iwo and I'm not offended by your comments. However less mature audiences may absorb this doc as one of heroic American marines bravely exterminating fanatical brainwashed nameless 'japs' in hellish conditions. For Christ's sake there are even parts where the marine muses about boiling the Japanese heads and keeping the skulls as 'trophies' in the 36 Days Of Hell doc. How could they even include that on film? Remember God made the 'japs' too.
@mrmetalcore2019 More irrelevant drama from the announcer....maybe there are one or two really nutcases that kept skulls, most Marines are not like that at all. The whole doc is drama laced. Why do you think they still can't report on war properly? Yes, God made the Japanese also, he should have left some of them out.
@Toddinfantry actually the taking of skulls was quite common on one island, could check it out but i dont mean to start a argument here, just to say it was more common than you might think.
@mrmetalcore2019 Well if you know history, you would know that this was already done. The Japanese attacked Wake Atoll during the beginning of the war and found the defending Marines beat their ass pretty good, not once but twice. It took the Japanese sending a second invasion force to beat just 400 Marines and they may not have surrendered so quickly had there not been 1200 civilians on the island.
Part of being a Marine is being able to swim. Trying to swim with full combat gear doesn't work, so many were lost when they had to abandon landing craft.
Guys! Read the Book Letters From Iwo Jima Its a really good book

incredibly brave Japanese soldiers. How would Americans have defended that island against such incredible odds.
mrmetalcore2019 9 months ago
@mrmetalcore2019 Really it would depend on what it was to them, like if it was Hawaii they'd probably hold till the last man
