just great mr tricker, i have learned so much from your videos , i have started to do my own versions and would love you to have a look, thanks for all the help over the last few years. peace.
Another great cover. I've been playing it most of the day - and I work 6 days so that's saying something :) What chord are you playing at 1.07 please? And I assume the following chord is a b minor?
Thanks mate. By the way I'm loving your lessons too. Any chance of doing a lesson (or cover) on the very obscure 'Heather' by the Beatles? There's a demo version on youtube - it really is a sweet tune. I believe it was a McCartney / Donovan effort circa 1968.
this makes me want to learn the (acoustic) early version of "something." if you could do that one, i would be forever greatful. i've always wondered how it was played, but i just dont have the ear to figure it out.
Privettricker: Another nice axe my friend and another fine vid. Thanks for all that you've done to help us learn this music. I really appreciate it. BTW looking at you and your surroundings, i'm really doubting your being 63. Still great work keep it up and try your best to spend as much time with your sweet wife.
@privettricker your work is stellar (and prolific). you are a great american. kudos to your wife as well for allowing you to indulge. do you play in a band?
Your videos are super! I have been helped a great deal by your videos. It has been a long time since I have had the time to play. Now I have the time, and your way of playing has helped me. I love the new songs when you e-mail them out. The time you put into makeing the videos is super. All I can say is Many Thanks.
@4crevis No, you shouldn't want to play like somebody else. Play like yourself. It's nice to be able to mimic other players, but you can still have your own identity as a player.
@4crevis I agree with you..One has to be able to mimic well before forging own style. It never cease to amaze me when I come across people, who obviously can't play the piece well and has no talent at all, label some of their cover as playing in their own style.
Love your videos, I started playing at age 46, am now 55. Took me along time to just get halfway decent, and your videos are helping me make giant leaps, so thank you so much. Any chance you know and could post "Green grass and high tides" by the outlaws, and "Angry Eyes" by Loggins and Messina? Just a request as both those songs crank. Again, thanks so much for your postings, love your posting of Ten Years gone by Zep and Dogs by pink floyd.
Just a thought ... when you hit the A during the bridge before you go back into the verse. What about an (the?) ascending bass line starting at the low A before you hit the Dm?
@privettricker Yes, according to "Life," Keith credits Ry Cooder for open G, although he writes that he was already mucking about with open E and D because of Don Everley ("Little Susie"). I can't think of an open tuning Beatles song unless you count drop D (which isn't really open tuning).
We all owe a great debt of gratitude to PT for his hard work and instruction. What about James Taylor's stuff PT? (you got a friend, Mexico, Machine gun kelly, fire and rain)?? ----after all, you've covered it all!
Three cheers! Another tumbler drops into the lock. Just a side question: I wonder - when did the Beatles (and for that matter, the Stones) begin using capos? Were they used in the early/mid-sixties? My uninformed impression is that capos came out of the folk movement. Anyhoo - thanks for rendering this classic. Great.
@ottocarpenter Thats a good question. I think Dylan probably influenced them to start that back in 65. The other part of that question is when did they use open tunings---Beatles didn't do that, but Keith did. I think it was Ry Cooder that intrduced him to that in 1967--it sure payed big dividends with Honky Tonk Women , Brown Sugar, tumbling dice, start me up.
@IdolHans The open tunings started way back in the early blues and country stuff. The slide stuff was probably Hawaiian influence. Keith was using E and D a lot and then Ry turned him on to Open G and Keith took off. Apparently Ry was not pleased with this at all. He felt that Keith had stolen his style? It was invented a long time a go for Banjo players. 5 strings open G tuning. I can't think of one Beatles song in any open tuning. Zep used a lot too.
@andy65guitar I usually think of style as the "gift that keeps on giving" right? Apparently there is a mob of people angry with Keith Richards to include Chuck Berry and Ry Cooder. But if it's any consolation to the renaissance and enlightenment, then Keith claims in his autobiography that he then showed Ike Turner the DGDGBD (open G) tuning! To discover future greatness, we must turn to the past!
@IdolHans Yeah totally! Just because someone teaches you a chord or a song or a riff doesn't mean they own the exclusive rights to them! Keith always played Chuck better than Chuck anyways. He should be flattered. Ry uses open G almost exclusively for slide anyway and Keith has always admitted that Ry taught it to him. Keith invented all of those great stones riffs out of that. Every musician borrows from one another. There is nothing wrong with that.
@ottocarpenter I don't think the Beatles used capos a great deal. I do know they tuned down for some songs, and some songs were recorded normally and varispeeded down (they slowed the tempo down which in the process lowers the key. Nowadays you can change the tempo without changing the key).
@jdenicholls Lets see if we can list Beatles capoed songs---Michelle, Norwiegan Wood, If I needed someone, Girl, Nowhere Man, She Said, Here comes the sun, ---probably a few more I can't remember....
@IdolHans I stand corrected. I remembered Here comes the sun right after i clicked post. But I notice most of those songs you mentioned are off the Rubber Soul Era. Perhaps that gives Otto his answer then.
@jdenicholls Strawberry fields is a prime example of that. It is actually 2 tracks morphed together. Great song I love Lennon's acoustic version of this by himself. Beautiful.
@andy65guitar I did know that actually. I think it's on the second "Let me take you Dooooown" You can kind of her it drop down, I think the key even changes slightly. Not so much that it's an actual key change, but all the notes are a little lower. I didn't know Lennon had an acoustic version of the track, I shall go find it.
You're a Legend ! Thanks man. A friend of mine loves playing this - but he plays it so so wrong - and now I can show him this vid so he'll learn it properly ! hehe ! Always love hearing the different + diverse kinds of music you share with us all. They were All Important - but I think George was like 'the glue' that made Paul + Johns songs fit + stick together so well. Your tribute to him is inspiring !
@Timbats93 Just watch him play it a few times. You should be able to figure out the majority of it without having problems. This is a relatively easy song to learn.
Nice I like this version better than the one on the white album. What cd is this on? I would like to pick it up. He should have kept this song very simple. Hindsight is 20/20. Much better than the original even with Claptons solo on it. Great job. I love the high notes you can get when using a capo up the frets. Something just rings even paying the standard positioning of the chords. Love it.
