@rotory2002 Thank-you! It's good to know that someone besides me is familiar with all Chet's records.
I tend to think the problem is that many people think of Chet as a limited to playing country. When they hear him play classical, their mind chokes up and they think "No way!"
The if they listen even more and hear his blues and jazz recordings, their circuits in their brains get blown. They can't believe one man could master all those styles. But they didn't call him
@daffydoug Mr Guitar for nothing! He didn't win all those grammys, instrumentalist of the year and other awards, besides being inducted into the rock and roll AND country halls of fame for plunking little meaningless, beginner Mel Bay book tunes tunes. Chet was the MASTER!
As dirty harry .said "a man has got to know his limitations" This is one I wouldnt even waste my time trying. No way no how. I did play a tune for a fellow at Sweetwater Sound once. They not only sell guitars but also do alot of recording. The guy said I was a real good guitar player. Then he paused and I said but dont quit my day job. He agreed lol.Great album this song is from. From Sousa to Bach.
There's a word to describe much of Bach's work - "relentless".
Beneath the mild mannered "Country Gentleman" exterior there did beat the heart of a predatory cat. Like Bach, he was relentless in his pursuit of perfection.
@stanster69 One of the really great things about Chet was his wllingness to let others take the lead. As good and as versatile as he was he was not ashamed to play backup.
@raythom79 : Chet was definitely a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. I favorited a video on my page with Chet, Liona, & Lenny Breau, that was filmed in Chet's basement, made from an old VHS. Very nice discussion.
After hearing Andres Segovia play Medelssohn's "Songs Without Words," I am never surprised by what can be transcribed to guitar. This is interesting, but I think it lacks the blend that a "bowed" string ensemble presents. It still takes major musicianship to even attempt it, so I am not "belittling" the effort (:^).
BACH. Need I say more? The father of modern music as well as the greatest composer to have ever lived. (Even though I said "need I say more?" I did)! :)
OK. But Wikipedia agrees with me so I'll guess you'll have to disagree with both of us.
From the entry on Classical period (music): "The dates of the Classical Period in Western music are generally accepted as being between about 1750 and 1830. However, the term classical music is used colloquially to describe a variety of Western musical styles from the ninth century to the present..."
@4Topwood Take any position you like, but please don't base your decision on a Wikipedia "article". That's tantamount to getting your groceries from the city dump.
I based my decision not on Wikipedia but on the music courses I've taken. I don't have links to those.
Put simply, all Classic[al] music can be considered classical music but not all classical music is from the Classic[al] period, just as all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares.
@4Topwood That's good that you have an opinion, and I'm relieved to hear that you don't base it upon Wiki. In my classes, a Wiki reference is an instant F. I still do not agree, but I live in a free country.
@moproducer Despite the fact that an independent audit found that Wikipedia is about as accurate as any other encyclopedia. You must have an exceptionally nice city dump in your town.
@Hikikomori013 Well, how about that? An 'independent audit' also claimed that more people admire Hitler than Jesus, and another 'independent audit' proved that gasoline is at a national average of $0.60/gallon.
Your 'independent audit' is about as well-referenced as Wikipedia. Hey, put on your hard hat; the sky is falling.
@moproducer The first would be a survey, rather than an audit, the second would be a completely spurious number pulled out of a hat. Neither would be an example from an NPR story on crowd sourcing.
Embarrassingly, it seems that a large number of people correcting information results in fairly correct information. But it gets very little respect from authoritarians who want their own priesthood to control and restrict access to information to a small source of elites.
@Hikikomori013 Hey, if you want to get your "facts" from Wikipedia, go for it; it's a free country. If you show up in one of my classes with such a reference, you'll get very familiar with the letter "F".
@Hikikomori013 You have no idea what I teach. I agree you would shut your brain off; it's probably been that way all your life. You seem to have no idea what true research is; "just take it for granted that anything on Wikipedia is correct".
But it's OK. This is a free country, and you'll eventually learn.
@moproducer I don't "just take it for granted that anything on Wikipedia is correct". (and why do you put that in quotes? Who are you quoting without attribution?) or anything else without confirmation from independent sources. But I don't look down on something outside elite sources either.
Wikipedia may be the most peer reviewed document in history. Proven errors are mostly at the level of whether the Yamanote Line has a 2 minute headway or 3 minutes.
@Hikikomori013 Dear friend; it is clear that you have crystallized your conjecture in this context and your capacious comprehension of the case is commensurable for you to carry forward conspicuously.
I suggest that you continue to use Wikipedia as your cardinal compendium of controlled research and documentation, and court whatever thesis or dissertation you crave in whatever academic circle you choose.
You'll at least get through junior high school. Give it a rest; goodbye.
It would be even better if this was Chet playing....:(

Chet was a very talented man. Most people who know of him think of him mostly as the country artist, but he was so much more than that.

daffydoug, definitely very good! But one correction: Not classical at all. As with all Bach, VERY Baroque!
moproducer 3 years ago 8
@moproducer
No, in fact, this is classical--but it's not from the Classical period.
4Topwood 10 months ago
@4Topwood That, my friend will require a detailed explanation.

@moproducer
No, daffydoug is right. True, Bach's music is not from the Classic period, it's from the Baroque. But it's still classical music.

@4Topwood Allow me to differ with your opinion, but I will agree that it certainly is music.

@moproducer Of course I would. You teach process, so the accuracy of the answer is less important than the method used to reach the answer.
And Wikipedia is not under the control of the vested interests, so it's naturally the wrong process, regardless of the accuracy.
If I were in your class I would probably shut my brain off and parrot back your opinions.
