This is known as "Spider Vein" lightning. Or "Sheet Lightning" i'm not 100% but I think Spider Vein is when it's Cloud to Cloud generated, and Sheet Light is Cloud to Ground generated.

Auto focus sucks sometimes doesn't it. I have had some huge lightning bolts go out of focus at the wrong time and screw the whole shot up. That tree bolt though.......the ground to air bolts are always great to watch. Check out my Compilation of Lightning bolt I filmed In Australia

Ahh ok. well i dont understand why people say it comes from the ground. if lightening is built up static in teh atmosphere how does it come from teh ground? lol
@xWalleRx It IS moving across the sky, but Lightning CAN sprout up from the ground. As long as there are more negative charges than positive, lightning can happen. Same reason you shock your finger when you touch metal sometimes. An imbalance of negatives. As far as ground lighting goes, it happens it just a much more rare form of lightning.

Though it looks like it is coming from the ground up, it is actually is moving across the top of the sky.
