  • Hemanta is just awesome!!!!

  • Tapas tumi abar phire jao Chandannagar...

  • the greatest race, damaged by cpim

  • The greatest songs are OUR GURUS SONGS .Yes proud to be born as a bangalee.

  • Tapas pal is the best actor---

  • Speechless.. proud to be a Bengali!! Joy guru..

  • Tarun Majumdar is the one director who made most creative use of Rabindrasangeet in his films. I doubt if anyone comes even close!

  • Its very difficult to separate bhakti song from prem song of Rabindronath. Initially I thought that this is a love song after hearing the last stanza where it says 'boroner o mala poraye'. Now I understood that it is infact a love song where the beloved is God. I think poet prayed God as a 'premika' like Mirabai. Pardon me if I am wrong.

  • @jyotishka Thanks for putting it in such a different light! I knew that this song is Bhakti song Yet your explanation is Beautiful! May God bless you! Proud to be a Bengali!

  • @jyotishka, I am not sure if your explanation is correct. Because God can put garland around the neck of anyone belonging to His/Her Bhakta class. Here the poet asking God to forgive him and welcome him in His/Her divine heart by putting a garland around his neck. God is beyond gender. Though a Bhakta can worship Him or Her in many ways including male-female thing, but that is considered the most lower kind of Bhakti where the devotee worships God as his lady love. That is Tantra.

  • If the male Bhakta sees God as his "Premika" then it is called "veerbhabam" means there you see God as Goddess and wants to accept Her as wife. This is typical Tantra and Sri Ramakrishna referred this type of worship as "Entering the room of heaven through toilet door". Attaining the love for God via this route is extremely difficult and often causes huge downfall. For Tagore, he never supported Tantra. He was much against even Kali Puja. His love as far as I know was pure Bhakti.

  • Tagore was a Brahma and Brahmas always believed in simple Bhakta-Bhagvat relationship, just as Arjuna had with Krishna (though Arjuna saw God as his friend and that is another way of loving God, but I refer here Arjuna as devotee and not friend of God). To tell you honestly, right from the beginning I knew this song to be a typical "Puja Porjai" of Tagore. Only in this movie it is put in a different way and misunderstanding it is very natural.

  • and about Mirabai, her devotion to Krishna was that of a wife, but I am afraid to say here our ordinary meaning of "Wife" does not stand true. It is hard for us ordinary mortals to imagine a sexless love. And when you get the love of God like Mirabai, then you cease to differentiate between male and female. Now you can understand this kind of love what she had cannot be simply explained through a word "Premika". It was something supernatural and inexplicable, beyond comprehension.

  • @MrSatrajitgupta Thanks Satrajit for the clarification. I always enjoy this song without thinking much about its true meaning. It calms my mind.

  • @jyotishka great, that is another way of enjoying music :). I know someone who loves to listen music without lyrics. However to me words are another beautiful expression of songs especially those of Tagore's :).

  • @jyotishka Or it can be likened to the Sufi tradition in which God is the beloved.

  • Continued from previous post:

Desire is quenchless; save me by slaying them.

Let the last victory be mine in losing myself to YOU.

I have lost my self running from door to door,

Now make me yours by accepting me as I am.

  • @anupamsircar Very good job. Thanks.

  • Here is an attempt to provide an essence of this prayer. There are almost always multiple meanings to what he says. So, purists will pardon me:

Let me touch thy feet, Please do not shut me out.

I will embrace them to my heart with my life and death in my joy and sorrow.

How much longer do I have to carry this burden

Of lazy and misdirected passions and desires?

Please give me a place at your feet and

Shape me as you wish but let me not be wasted away.

    Continued in the next post.

i love this song. so if u know, plz explain.

    thnx in advance

  • As I understand it:

#1-- Poet compares himself/his dedication for the lord as a bunch of flowers and ask his lord to make a garland with them, instead of allowing them to spread on ground.

#2. The poet prays to his lord for killing the never-satisfying lust and greed inside him in order to save them. "In their last battle, let them win over by loosing to you, i.e. let my lust and greed succumb to you so that the thirst is ever-satisfied by gaining you". --

"sesh jaye jena hay se vijayee..."

  • this song was originally in PARISHODH (Shyama) where Shyama, the nautch girl ,was singing this song addressed to Bajrasen. If you know this context you can easily explain the meaning of the words
