Written in the 1850's by a spurned lover it became the # 1 hit in the civil war.. It got so the reb officers banned it cause the troops would get so homesick they'd desert. Waylon does it with real feeling, good slow tempo and a great voice!
Great song and delivery acashfan1. I'm a big Waylon/Willie fan, but have never heard Waylon do this one. Any chance I might find out where a copy can be obtained?
Sam-go on Amazon and search The Restless Kid-Live at JD's. This song is on that CD which is a compilation of early live Waylon songs at JD's club in Arizona.
I recall this song when I was on the road driving a big rig cross country.
A long lonely straight and flat stretch on I-20 late one cold cold night. But it wasn't this version. I have the recorded version which is better IMHO. Maybe someday that version will be added.

As far as I know, Hank Williams is credited with the new lyrics (at least it says so on my Early Waylon cd) Anyone know if Hank recorded it himself??
