Best drummer of his generation, no disputing, simple as. The Roses were nothing without him, as was quite adequately proved once Robert Maddix came in to try and fill his shoes. Nice try Robbie, but sadly you convinced noone.
I love this stuff. I've been playing guitar (badly) and singing (badly) for 30 years. I had my first drum lesson last week. I reckon I'll get this song cracked by Wednesday.
Reni was the KEY to Love Spreads!!! I always wondered how a song so BADASS and aggressive and sooo ROCK AND ROLL managed to sound so COOL and laid back at the same time. No other pure rock and roll song has this magic. It's Reni's drumming. He makes Love Spreads so smooth and classy and pure and COOL. Combine this with Squire's insane guitar playing. Good God, they better play this live.
@braddyboy82 I sincerely hope they will play a couple of Second Coming tracks at least, to hear them played live by Reni for the first time. Love Spreads was their highest charting single. I would imagine they'll play it.
Seriously underated drummer!! I just watched the press conference of the stone roses reforming and he underates him self massivley, He says he's mainly a dad now and he's going to balance the two. I think he should show his kids how talented daddy really is!!! Where's my tickets . Fuckin A..... They better play fools gold then I can go to my grave a happy man.
@Vugam You overreact, I find. He's a very good drummer but come on, a lot of people who can play the funk can play this. People should get out of the rock n roll drummer thing and grasp funk drumming as well and then you'll see it ain't THAT special as everyone is raving about. Not dissing Reni, not by far, but merely adding some perspective. And Bonham didn't have the swing Reni had? So untrue. Are you rounded enough on the drums to claim something like that?
@downjones72 So, are you rounded enough on the drums to claim that? I’ve been playing for 10 years and Reni’s the best drummer I’ve come across; the complexity, fluidity and dexterity of playing, and his unmatchable range. That includes jazz, swing, rock drummers etc. Have you ever seen Reni play live? Or have you just listened to this one track and made this judgement? I have found the people who qlways overreact are the Bonham sycophants. Try Jaki Liebezeit for anything stunning drummer.
To further the Jaki Liebezeit thing, he seems to be pretty unheard of despite his brilliance. Like Reni, really. Type in "Can Halleluhwah Part 1/2" to the YouTube search to hear a bit of his groove, maaaan.
Considering that `Love Spreads` is basically a hard rock track, it shows you how Reni could never lose his groove. Strangely, `Sally Cinnemon` is my favourite Reni piece. Man, that dude could make anything swing. Worship him....he is a musical God.
This is so amazing, what a genius, and this shows how incredible he was - nobody on the planet has ever got close to Reni's groove. I'd like to hear Breaking into Heaven or Driving South, massive drum tracks. If anyone wants to play drums, this is what you should be aiming for!
This has become my most viewed upload! Far exceeding anything else I have uploaded. John Squire's guitar, which is the next most viewed of the Love Spreads Isolated tracks, only comes at just over half the views Reni has! :D
@blurry67 This is so amazing. There is not a drummer on the planet who has ever come close to Reni's groove. Thanks for posting. This exposes how much of a genius he was, and he was self taught. Anyone who is learning to play drums, this is what you should be aiming for! I'd like to hear Driving South or Breaking into Heaven isolated..........awesome.
@blurry67 This is so amazing. There is not a drummer on the planet who has ever come close to Reni's groove. Thanks for posting. This exposes how much of a genius he was, and he was self taught. I have to play this for my 8 year old son. He's all into John Maher (Buzzcocks) who is fantastic, definitely. But he doesn't get Reni because he doesn't play "fast enough." This should show him "fast" doesn't always equal "good". Reni's just pure class....
@blondegolden Get him the Blackpool Live DVD and let him watch Reni on that, particularly Elephant Stone and the Waterfall outro. The guy's remarkable and faster than any drummer I've seen.
The whole music section of The Roses were underrated. John Squire's wailing guitars, Reni's funky drumming and Mani's understated bass playing should all be adored.
Love these vids when you have separated the instruments. Is it possible to do the same thing with Tears? Thats my favorite song by The Stone Roses and I would really enjoy that
@alexfrojd1 This came to me in four separate mp3s and I don't know how they were separated. If I ever found out how this was done, I'll ask if they can do some other song.
Christ, they should have just released this as a single. Bollocks to the guitar and the singing. I'd have bought the thing!
By far and away the best drummer of his generation, and up there with the best ever. I'll say he's better than Bonham, Moon etc. A step above them. Just listened to some Led Zepp stuff and Bonham's drumming, although fantastic at times, is a bit wooden and doesn't have this stunning groove. Genius.
This guy made me start drumming, no drummer alive today grooves like Reni just my own feelings there. Thanks Reni for getting me into something, that although I'm not great at it makes me smile and makes me money at the same time who could ask for more! I really miss Reni in the world of music.
The individual tracks are possible because of the 'Rock band' games. You download the stems in a mogg file and they open as all the seperate tracks =)
To me it sounds like Squire said "Ive got this tune can you just play along for a bit?" Totally imrovised and yet he still kills it on every single hit.
@comfortblanket Last I heard about him he was making his money investing in properties in and around Manchester. Apparently he's a landlord and a family man these days.
How have you got these individual tracks on, they are amazing, and thank you very much for uploading them. It would be interesting if you could upload Breaking Into Heaven as individual tracks, that would be a very interesting listen indeed.
Reni was the genius in the Roses. The biggest loss from the music scene since Jeff Porcaro. It is like he died. John Squire how could let this guy down sticks and walk away for good. You blew it you douche bag. I always knew there was a lot more going on with the beat to this song. Yep, Squire again, pushing it back in the mix.
@jakeenan pleasure! Though it has recently come to light that it was Brown too who had a problem with Reni. Apparently, according to Brown, Reni wanted to come back but Brown told him he had been replaced and that was that. So I think Squire has taken yet again full blame for something that wasn't as black and white as many think.
@blurry67 You are right. It is not as cut and dried as some of us fans presume it is. Even after all this time we still feel sad at the lost opportunities of what might have been, I guess. History has pointed the finger of blame at Squire and, the likes of myself, have been happy to go along with that. In the end, everybody lost. You fools we cry! I miss Reni the most and still cling to the hope he might drum again one day, somewhere.
@jakeenan The end of the Stone Roses was a sad event not just for fans, but for music too. They were the greatest band to come out of Britain since the Beatles, IMO and they could have gone far. Unfortunately they threw it all away. But maybe their greatness remains intact this way. They didn't have time to burn out and become predictible like so many other bands have done. Shame it should end on a bitter note, but I don't point the finger at any specific individual. All 4 had a part in it.
@blurry67 Yeah, the 4 of them are to blame. Brown was right when he said they made each other great. And they were. Best since Led Zep IMO. Squire did give Brown a few songs last year but he said his son told him not to do it cos he sold him out. Nah. He's King Monkey again, a botched reunion could spoil it. I saw the Roses with Reni, it was rock, funk, soul, jazz all in one. Saw them without him & it had no soul or Swing. Painful. Love Reni here- one with Mani added would be cool too.
I like the ghost notes at 1:15. The best drummer of his generation, my favourite since Moon and Bonham and responsible for getting drumming back on the right course after their deaths and a poor period for drumming in the 80's. He plays in response to the rest of the band whilst keeping it 'tight but loose'. All this from a 3-piece kit too.
wow it sounds alot more complicated just isolated. with john's guitars taking the spotlight, especially in this song, it makes this guy sound severely underrated
Keith Moon and Allan "Reni" Wren are simply the 2 greatest drummers of all time, in my humble opinion...
