@wannarockher When you have the slightest clue as to who the real musicians are who provide the true creativity in the studio or on the stage, then we can have an intelligent conversation. A first call musician is the guy they call to come in to create the right feel, bass line, hook, or whatever it is that can make a song into something more. That player has the creativity to do that for the songwriter and producer quickly, efficiently, and better than anyone else.

Two of the most amazing bassists in the world on the same stage and sound just magical together. I don't think that either was over highlighted nor imbalanced. Tal and Otiell are both my bass heros (well, MM is as well, along with a number of others, but that's a different post). Please don't disrespect them and their performances.
as a reasonably accomplished classically-trained jazz vocalist and a moderately seasoned guitarist, I will assure you that Otiel's bass/mouth unison is NOOOOO easy feat, at least as far as how exquisitely precise and in tune he is with EVERY NOTE!!! It gets to the point that it's hard to tell if its more impressive that he can play what he sings or that he can sing what he plays. Warsel - You dope! It's not "high up singing", it's scating which he is copying with his bass. Maybe if you think George Benson it will make it easier for you. Do you play? It is no small feat to be able to sing EXACTLY what you are improvising.

Tal isn't the most skilled bass player to come along, but she's got enough skills to allow her to create melody and rhythm in ways that those of us that aren't "hating" and aren't "your nigga" and also residing on "Gods Green Earth" hear with our OWN ears quite clearly thank you. I've seen her with Wayne Krantz in NYC at Bar55 (very small bar), and she absolutely hypnotized the audience while Krantz wanked on and on. Her solo on Thank You Faletinme Be Mice Elf Agin highlights her amazing flow.

umm I wouldnt say all that. Im a Tal fan, but shes not FAR more superior than Meshell. Meshell's been killin it for the past ten yrs. and is a well known bassist. Both of them are great.

maybe she's overrated in comparison to pro players with at least twice her age and experience, but look at where she is ability-wise for the time she's been playing. Can you deny the incredible talent and ability she has? Before I think to criticize or comment negatively on someone elses playing, I always ask myself how would I stack up? So how would YOU stack up if you EVER got the chance to play along side the players SHE'S shared the stage with?
I can't get enough of Oteil! Not always a fan of his singin, but most of the time it rocks. Tal is definitely holding down some serious groove and was not out played or otherwise, she's up there mainly on merit and she will get better. The hatin' is getting tiresome.

Not just any really good bass player can sit in with the bands she's played with (and improve every bass line cover that she plays), I don't care HOW cute you are...

Tal is great, but here was so so. Lost the groove a couple of times in the beginning. And just on skill and musicality Oteil completely smoked her big time. But she'll get there in 10 years or so.

Tal's fantastic, what a prodigy, might want to work on her stage skills though and recognition of the audience.Playing to the drummer and getting into the groove is great, but that's called a jam, not a performance.
I agree. She's an excellent bassist, very solid groove, but she should be facing the crowd when soloing, express yourself and communicate using your music talent and skills. My opinion.
they must have changed their headstock design then. The tunning keys are tilted toward the body just like a warwick's would be and the top of the headstock has that warwick wave to it.
You can see why Tal was voted best bass, as for lightweight shes on the up and catching fast, when you work with the best and enjoy it speaks to my ears.
It's nice to see these players enjoying themselves. I've always thought highly of Oteil. I can't wait until I get Jimmy Herring's new solo album with Oteil and Kofi.
Music only becomes a contest to the immature. To the true music lover it is and always will remain pure listening pleasure.

I enjoyed this. I really appreciate what each bassist brings to the table regardless of who it is. I like Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Oteil, Hadrien Feraud, Ron Carter, Tom Kennedy and others.

Ok.......Im in no way trying to hate.....but yall seriously think Tal is the coldest bassist to come through Gods Green Earth, she's nice, but she gets too much credit for being a chick, my nigga Oteil would kill the mess outta her, so would all the greats and whoever said she is a top ten bassist needs to get their ears checked.....

Tal isn't the most skilled bass player to come along, but she's got enough skills to allow her to create melody and rhythm in ways that those of us that aren't "hating" and aren't "your nigga" and also residing on "Gods Green Earth" hear with our OWN ears quite clearly thank you. I've seen her with Wayne Krantz in NYC at Bar55 (very small bar), and she absolutely hypnotized the audience while Krantz wanked on and on. Her solo on Thank You Faletinme Be Mice Elf Agin highlights her amazing flow.

I agree with bumbaluv. This isn't the Olympic Games, for Christ's sake. It's MUSIC! You know, I've never heard oboe players argue over whose the fastest or who's got the most chops. Only guitarists and bassists. It's just really WEIRD! If you guys did half as much practicing as you do arguing we might actually get to see some of you on stage tearing it up.

I'm a guitarist so you can imagine how much of this kinda flak I've heard over the years. If these knuckleheads practiced half as much as they argue, we might actually get to to hear them tear it up someday!

Man Tal W. played with Jeff Beck and Vinnie C. and Chick Corea after beeing 6 Year learning on the Bass she´s very Good
I like that she really seems to have Fun when she´s on Stage
And her Debut CD is Great Wayne Krantz on Guitar and Keith Carlock on the Drums there
I cant wait until she practiced more and developed her playin and makes her new CD hopefully in 2009 or early 2010

Man both these bassists are awesome!!!!! Oteil with his Benson like bass style and tal's victor/Marcus style sound so great together!!! All the people who said anything negative on this playing is just a hater who has no idea what he is talking about. Tal plays with Vinny Colaiuta and Jeff Beck And her compositions on her debut album were great very advanced stuff so stop hating start practicing bro.

You know, I hadn't heard of her until tonight...stumbled on this clip from another thread...but whoever is saying she can't play, um, you don't really know what you're talking about. Probably about 3 players on earth who could steal the stage from Oteil, so this is not a truly fair comparison. But she's a charging player, no doubt about that.

maybe she's overrated in comparison to pro players with at least twice her age and experience, but look at where she is ability-wise for the time she's been playing. Can you deny the incredible talent and ability she has? Before I think to criticize or comment negatively on someone elses playing, I always ask myself how would I stack up? So how would YOU stack up if you EVER got the chance to play along side the players SHE'S shared the stage with?

I can't get enough of Oteil! Not always a fan of his singin, but most of the time it rocks. Tal is definitely holding down some serious groove and was not out played or otherwise, she's up there mainly on merit and she will get better. The hatin' is getting tiresome.

Tal is great, but here was so so. Lost the groove a couple of times in the beginning. And just on skill and musicality Oteil completely smoked her big time. But she'll get there in 10 years or so.

Tal's fantastic, what a prodigy, might want to work on her stage skills though and recognition of the audience.Playing to the drummer and getting into the groove is great, but that's called a jam, not a performance.

they must have changed their headstock design then. The tunning keys are tilted toward the body just like a warwick's would be and the top of the headstock has that warwick wave to it.
