  • I caught 2 of those dumb things last summer (7 and 8 lbs), while fishing for pike... They really bug me because they fight so hard I think I have a huge pike on... Just wondering, can you eat them? I heard that their bone structure was kind of funny but not sure. Thanks.

  • I saw the bluegill floating at 1:23 or something. Nice dogfish!

  • Im tired of idiot yankess claiming bowfin will ruin a bass population. The biggest threat to bass is BASS the parent bass eat 80% of their babies. A hungry bass would also eat a small bass thats why they have bass swimbaits

  • I ment just

  • I hush got back form vaction we were pullig them up I caught mine on. A waxworm

  • I catch these different.. i just wait in a cove and I think they actually get curious about the boat and i find them always surfacing and looking at it then i just put chunks of bluegill by there faces and they take it. btw it may be because of where i fish but these all seem small to me. where i catch them there 12 pounds plus. that one to me looked 5-6 pounds at the most.

  • hahah nice i got 2 two footers on the fox river

  • you should spearfish them. I shoot 8-10 pounders regularly

  • i shot bigger with my bow

  • i caught about the same size bowfin on a black and gold shallow diver rapala...nice catch

  • Love that scream

  • I hope you didn't release that fish....I've got a place on the north side of the Gravel lake and whenever we catch them they usually get tossed in the compost heap.

  • Bowfin don't just feed off the bottom, I caught a 36 inch 18 pound bowfin in the St. Lawrence river fishing with a green and black deep diving rattling rapala. And whoever said to kill them is wrong, they are a prehistoric fish and native as well. Snakeheads are invasive species!

  • haha I caught one of these with my bare hands about 5 years ago at my lake on Ice Cracking lake, MN. Then again off my dock a few years later. The one I caught with my hands was near the swimming beach. I just reached down grabbed it and threw it ashore. I threw it back in a little later of coarse.

  • lol

  • are you from brooklyn or MI?

  • @11brichm CHICAAAAAAGO

  • i was hoping the guy would fall into the water

  • he says stand back folks when were only watching the video

  • first 10 seconds scared me

  • THanks for the post ! I been fishin trout & salmon most of my life in rivers

I've heard that Lakes Cadillac & Mitchell have dog fish but have never seen one

  • Next time you catch one then send it my way to texas.

Been trying to find a decent sized one for aquaria. lol

  • cool video. not many people target them. they fight better than any bass will.

  • have you ever thought if this never leave a fish close to water it will wobble away i am not saying that mean ok

  • i was bored so i typed in "dogfish" in the search bar...

"KILL THEM they are worthless fish and an invasive speacies i live in michigan and ive seen what they can do to a lake its not good all they eat is fish so it kills entire populations of native fish" THAT IS THE MOST RETARTED THING I HAVE EVER HERD THEY ARE NOT INVASIVE OR WORTHLESS AND U CAN GO SUCK A DICK U MOTHER FUCKING REDNECK HIPPIE ACTIVIST WHO THINKS THEY KNOW EVERYTHING, GO BUY A GUN PUT IT IN YOUR MOUTH AND PULL THE TRIGGER, IT WOULD DO US ALL SOME GOOD

  • @xxxericcartmanxxx1 That's a little extreme, but I agree. Dogfish are native and are the #1 predator of young carp. They are an important part of the food chain and to kill one would be doing more harm than good.

  • uhhh

  • those are fun to catch.

  • All I'm ssaying is that when we caught a dogfish, we were supposed to kill it. because it is considered a rough fish like a shiner.

  • @SeanJordan15 your not supposed to kill roughfish...

  • No Spiderlectra.. Bowfin are native.. as has been said, you must be confusing them with snakeheads.

Bowfin have been around that area for 100,000,000 years or so. Learn a bit before you spew ignorance.

Now snakeheads? If you catch it, kill it, those ARE invasive.

And please, go ahead tell me which lakes have been devestated by bowfin...

  • rofl at dock entry, 10 points for effort. i guess these things are different from the pacific dogfish squalidae.

  • hehe the screaming wasnt needed in the beginning :) I caught my first bowfin yesterday in a NJ creek in a Kayak about as big as that. talk about a ride haha! I didnt know what it was, all i see was the teeth and how huge it was. was fun getting it into the kayak!!! and fun getting it OUT!!!! these things are crazy. and i will never dangle my feet outside the kayak.. AGAIN!

  • i enjoyed the epic beginning, great way to start a video ^_^ lol

  • they call that a (sounds like shoe-peek) in louisiana

  • nice catch! i was just fishing in a creek near a river this weekend, and i hooked a little over 2 footer dogfish in the first 20 SECONDS of fishing! Even though its not a good fish to eat or be proud of catching, i was happy to catch my biggest fish ever! :)

  • @cmndrkool321 NICE!

  • did you catch any catfish

  • i know alot of people dont like them but personally i think they're beautiful fish. just the prehistoric look and the teeth and the color. idk i just think they're cool looking.

  • do u bottm fish 4 them like a catfish or do u use a bobber

  • @austin4497 Exactly, I fish for them the same way I would fish for flatheads. Flat slidder weight and a mono leader of about 18" so the bluegill can swim up off the bottom.

  • @spiderelectra321 Even though they are prehistoric? Bowfin are a needed scavenger fish and are a great way to keep stunted blugill populations down. Musky and Pike will do much more damage to Bass populations that scavenger bowfin.

  • @spiderelectra321 I think you are confusing the Bowfin for Snakeheads. They are very similar in appearance

  • @theman4221 no i catch and shoot dogfish all the time i live in michigan so their invasive here in the inland waters

  • @spiderelectra321 your an ass clown bowfin are not an invasive species they are native. Apparently you do not realize that many lakes were fishless until we stocked them. Take for instance the lakes in the Sierra Neveda Mountain Range. They were fishless until we stocked them in the 1930's. Know what you are talking about next time clown.

  • @cichlid83 i live in michigan wer they are invasive at least to the inland lakes

  • @spiderelectra321 bowfin are actually native fish you retard. do your research.

  • @spiderelectra321 They are not invasive in Michigan. They have been here forever. If you kill all the dogfish all you will have in the lake is small panfish.

  • @spiderelectra321

    Bowfin are native fish.

Snakehead look quite similar to Bowfin, and they ARE invasive. Not Bowfin.

  • @spiderelectra321 google search "bowfin native range" they arent invasives you dumbass

  • @spiderelectra321 sorry for yall up there lol...in louisiana this is one of the best fish you can get....(we call them choupic)

  • @spiderelectra321 They are not an invasive species. In fact they are native to the east US.

  • @spiderelectra321 you're thinking of snake head

  • Respond to this video... nice fish!!! never heard them called a dogfish before. I live near the ocean though and we call sand sharks dogfish.

  • @spiderelectra321 they are native fish. they do not destroy populations of other species because they are just as much a part of the ecosystem.

  • Can you eat bowfin, i caught one that was 14 pounds, and i released it not knowing what it was..

  • @hairyballhanger I wouldn't recommend eating a Bowfin, they are scavengers eating anything and I would imagine that they would be very bony.

Many people use them as fertilizer for their garden because they are known to cause some problems for smaller bodies of water. Me personally I let them go.

  • I just saw this fish at Hardwood lake, and didn't know what it was. So if they are mean ,and have big teeth, do you think it would be alright to continue swimming at this lake? I've never seen them there before and we have been going there for about 4 years. However, for the last two years it seems as if we catch a lot less fish then we used to there. Do you think this may be the reason why? I'm just trying to find out as much info as I can about this ugly fish.

  • In Wisoncsin, its illegal to release dogfish.

  • @SeanJordan15 no its not. they are native. find me one document stating that. dont preach ignorance.

  • it doesnt look anything like a dog though..... O.o

  • Thats one ugly fish! I've grown up fishing in Michigan (the U.P. until 2 years ago when i moved to GR), and I have NEVER seen such an ugly fish inland from Superior or Michigan. I might have to make the hour or so drive just to catch some bowfins

  • @hossimus24prime Agreed!

  • I loled at you running on the dock in the beginiing

  • umm tha real name is choupiqueee

  • @gmoneylovemoney123 thats a nickname, they are really called bowfin like the title says.

  • is it a beagle

  • this is a dam fish not a dogfish wth is this

  • the dogfish in the irish sea put up some fight.

  • I love dogfish! They fight like they're twice their size and I've never caught a small one...

  • oh and tagslures....i caught my first bowfin on lake champlain the other day, and i wasnt even rlly fishing my pole was hanging off the side of the boat with the worm only a little ways in the water and he came up and grabbed it, he put up quite a fight only about 4 pounds though...haha not a very good fishin story but still

  • @3DGwolf Thats the way Dog Fish behave, very aggressive! Glad you caught one! Always a fun figh!

  • Obviously you don't fish if you think that's a catfish.........

  • thats not a dogfish thats a catfish

  • @snickersrocks1000 its not a catfish...its a bowfin or as he calls it a dogfish.......u can tell its not a cat fish..it doesnt even hav whiskers plus bowfin hav the long dorsal fin that goes to the tail....which the tail is rounded to......most cat fish hav a forked tail....idk if all im saying is completely correct but still....clearly not a catfish....i mean seriously im a 15 year old girl and i can tell :]

  • bowfin are edible, you just need to know how to prepare them. If you handle them correctly, the flesh is nice.

     That thing was PISSED.

  • I caught the Minnesota State Record Bowfin on the St.Croix. It was 11lb 14oz. So bassman I dont think a 7lb will do.

  • Of course they're not snakeheads; but they are not dogfish either, google it fool!

  • @ogrecharger dogfish is a pretty common name for a bowfin. So is Grinnel. And would you believe it, a sauger/walleye is called a Sand Pike. But theyre not even related to a pike.

  • @bristowboy20 commonality does not imply truth. Bowfin and Dogfish are two different fish. You obviously didn't google it.

  • @ogrecharger Of course I googled it. Even before I watched this video. :) I know what a dogfish is. mr sharky. doesnt matter.

  • I love Gravel Lake so much. I have a lakehouse up there, Wonderful.

  • @chevy24chick Gravel Lake Rocks!

  • very nice. do you know about any other sw mich lakes that are good for bowfin?

  • Nice Dogger! Caught a 7.1lb dogger last weekend. Heading out this weekend to try for another piggy....maybe even a MN state record!

  • @bassman96 Thats nice i caught 2 bowfin this weekend that were 8lbs a 26 inch and a 28 inch

  • Dogfish are nasty looking suckers.

  • don't taste nasty :)

  • great to see someone who knows his fish

  • yo mine is much bigger......its as big as a adults full leg!!!...........sadly it got away :(

    but good lookin fish

  • its a harmless shark. ive got 1 almost 5 feet

  • LOL. So technically it was never your fish right? It was the one that got away?

But on that note, I caught a monster largemouth bass, but unfortunately, it broke the line, but not before it took the boat under and I had to swim for shore. But it was TOTALLY my fish.

  • i caught a 14 lb. dogfish on white lake

  • is this gravel lake, down by paw paw? just wondering because that lake is known for big bowfin & muskie

  • Yes, this is the gravel lake near paw paw....not to many musky but loads of big pike and bass.

  • why does everybody hate dogfish...so what you cant eat them, they eat the food of bass and catfish, i say bass and catfish eat the food of dogfish

  • you can eat them, you have to clean them before the die. after you clean them then batter and fry them. they taste amazing. exspecially if you let someone who knows how to fry fish good.

  • catching dogfish is fun but a little hard, each summer we go to salt spring island, Victoria and catch at least 10 dogfish in a week.

  • the closer you hold that to the camera the bigger it looks... 5 lbs lol ...maybe half of that

  • I also have a cottage at gravel lake, if you know the Gillunds

  • I have a summer cottage on that lake..I LOVE GRAVEL LAKE..best lake around
