1. The throw is really critical. You can throw the plane a little steeper or add a bit more up elevator. Also crimp the leading edge of the nose down a little.
2. I usually find this caused by too much up elevator. Back off there or crimp the nose a little. Try different launch angles.
Practice throwing while sitting on the floor or standing on your knees. I had the good fortune to work on my throw in a television studio, but this will work.
Almost everything I make is from that size. The Tumble Wing and The Follow Foil are exceptions. I'm working on breaking the world record for distance with a piece of A4 paper.
I use American letter size which is 8.5 inches by 11 inches. If you're starting with A4, simply remove 22mm from the bottom of the sheet before you begin folding.
Paper airplane guy dont listen to the bad comments because they might be unexpirenced or just cant make the plane I can make it fine and it does come back to me xD you guys JUST HAVE TO HAVE PATIENCE.....looking forward for more videos xD
this is the worst paper airplane EVER. if you do a fraction of a mistake its ruined. the video was crapy to. some parts i had to rewind and pause just so i could keep up, to put it short the paper air plane guy SUCKS crap.
Back in '98 my older brother bought a book that you wrote called "Return to the Fold" Collins Garwood Yang. He showed me this airplane and gave me the book. I figured out how to do this in Junior High, later on trying to impress my instructors. It never happened. It wasn't up until now at the age of 22 that I impressed a couple of math professors at my college ;-) This is my all time favorite airplane btw ;-)
Wow. You and about 10 other people managed to find that book. McGraw Hill figured out how to not market the book to anyone. It was poorly edited and typeset. Tons of errors in the publishing. Fantastic Flight has some of the planes (my designs) from that forgotten effort. Thay Yang has published other paper airplane books. Don Garwood had done a book on learning how to play the guitar. I'm not sure if I managed to end his publishing career with that effort.
@ThePaperAirplaneGuy Well he bought it at the Caltech Bookstore. I can only imagine how they got to ordering the books. And now that I come to think about it, I don't think I have seen that book anywhere in bookstores back in the 90's or 00's as far as my memory can recall. It looks like on Amazon it costs around $92. I'll have to look into Fantastic Flight though, I'm sure to get it! They are neat designs. You've done a great job at them btw. It's a great hobby.
This vid sucks. Small but crucial points and instructions are indirect and hidden by hands. Don't show your face because we don't care what you like. Be clear and slow but you can't do that because you are a bad tutorial maker. You never say that the paper is portrait style, you skip it and fold in have a second leaving no time to make thismwithout pausing every millisecond. P.S. You suck.
@spacexplorer100 American Letter Size. If you cut 22mm off the bottom of A4 paper you get the same ratio as 8.5 x 11 inches, which is US letter size.
@TheHaz2020 Ordinary if you live in the US: 8.5 x 11 inches. If you live in the Europe, chances are you'll need to remove 22mm from the bottom of a sheet of A4.
@TheNotoriousV The wings should have a downward sweep as they leave the body of the plane. Most airplanes (paper and full size) have an upward sweep. The downward sweep helps the plane stay in banked turn. An upward sweep makes the plane rock back to neutral.
im trying so mutch but is not working. i have already tried like 35 times but evry time i throw it its not working pleas help me i cant find where im doing it wrong.
All of the planes in my book, The Gliding Flight, flew 60 feet across the television studio. That was the minimum requirement for being included in the book. Those planes are all posted in the subscription part of my website, and of course, in my book. Many of those planes have flown 100 feet or more. I'm currently working on a couple of designs I hope will be record breakers. Of course, they'll go on my website after I break the records.
Whatever floats your boat. I'm curious, as I'm sure others are, what your strategy might be for making the plane boomerang back. As you can tell from the comments here, making instructions clear enough for others to successfully follow can be tricky work.
Without seeing a picture of what you've done to the plane, it's impossible to diagnose. Off hand, I'd say you may have too much wing droop on one side of the plane. One side of the plane should mirror the other. Likewise, if the winglets are not parallel, you'll get really weird flights. Keep at it. It's worth the effort.
@minhaitran Most paper used in copier machines is about 20lb stock. I've used 24lb stock with good results. Any beefier than that, and wing thickness changes enough to really alter the flight. I chose 20lb paper for almost all of my designs because that's what's most readily available.
@Cartoonsfantasycyx This paper is 8.5 x 11 inches. If you're starting with A4, simply remove 22mm from the bottom to get the correct width to height ratio for all of my planes.
@Cartoonsfantasycyx American letter size is widely available everywhere in the US. Outside the US, A4 is widely available. By removing 22mm from the bottom of an A4 sheet, you can make the correct size sheet for my airplanes to work.
@comdeycrew007 Overall symmetry is really important. Step one: get it to fly straight. Step two: get it to loop. Step three: work on throwing at a banked attitude.
The plane is doing a sideways loop to circle back.
Mine doesn't circle or loop at all. I had to rip of 20mm because it was A4 and the result looked a lot like yours. It must be something with the throwing
Where are your books available? You have the absolute best planes I have ever seen. I hate cut and paste planes, and so far your books are the best for avoiding those designs.
@Ammondude You can click through from my website, ThePaperAirplaneGuy, or you can search Amazon for The Gliding Flight or Fantastic Flight. I'm probably at your local book seller or library.
gotta say thats pretty cool but when your folding creases, use your nail on your thumb and run it across where you want to fold crease or any other type of fold.
Try removing 22mm from the bottom of the paper before you start folding. The wings are probably wider than the plane in the video, so you may need to add more curve to the leading edge, next to the fuselage. I don't have any experience with this plane folded from A4.
Hey john this plain is awesome :) i got the ITunes app and its great but i cant make out some of them because i cant see the points were your folding at.But its still great oh can you make a video of how to make a super canard i want to make one soo bad. Thanks for this video mine works great i need more room it doesn't turn tight enough ill tweak it alittle bit.
It's possible that the paper will tear at the nose, where the most layers come together. The plane will also fly faster because it's lifting more weight.
hayy i really liked your plane,, and i wasted like 25 papers trying to do it :S and it still does not boomerang, how ever i need to know. 1)is that paper your using an A4 sheet. 2)Well this one is hard to explain but, at 2:50 after you make the crease (please pause the video at 2:50 (the end of the crease at your right hand side)), your crease stops before the edge of the paper, while mine stops after the edge, at the side of the paper, is that okay or this makes it not balance..
I only use US letter size paper. You can remove 22mm from the bottom of A4 to get the correct ratio. I've not folded this particular plane with A4. It should, theoretically, work; but there will be some cosmetic differences. I would think the wing tips would look different. The wings would be longer looking. You might need to add larger winglets. The better solution is to remove 22mm from the bottom of the page before you start folding.
@rishi5154 Any flying machine needs accuracy to work well. This needs folding accuracy and attention to the adjusting details. Insist on the best from yourself and you'll get the best from the plane.
ok,i tried that with a regular A4 paper and as u can imagine it didnt happened so i removed 22mm and start over but it just cant turn back to me...everything that needs to be parallel is parallel and everything is symmetrical and it just flies straight(good flight though)... any suggestions?
actually i made it fly like a boomerang from my last try to make that plane and when i throw it it goes one of the ways but it doesnt go that way enough... so the plane is not comming right where I am and is landing like 1m away from me..do u know the reason?
@lxX50CentXxl Add some up elevator so that it will loop when you throw it straight. Getting it to boomerang back to you is like doing a loop sideways. The negative dihedral allows the plane to stay leaned over, and the up elevator will cause it to climb in a circle back to you. Make sure you're throwing the plane leaned over.
@ThePaperAirplaneGuy should i add only one elevator and is there a difference on which side i make it ? and just to add,the plane returns sometime with a loop but noth sideways but vertical...
@lxX50CentXxl Always add up elevator to both wings in a symmetrical way. I've seen this behavior before-- the plane almost seems to be stuck in upside down flight mode. Usually it means you've done a very good job of making the plane and a little up elevator will shift the balanced forces back to your favor.
do you use A4 or 8.5x11?

This is a good plane.
If you can, can you answer some questions about the boomerang II?
1. I can't get it to stall all the time
2. when it does, it turns back over and dies.
my ceiling isn't that high, so how do i get it to stall at a shorter elevation?

Bend the rear of the wing upwards a little bit. That's called up elevator. Since the plane "climbs" in a circle, that will make the circle smaller.

@TheNotoriousV The wings should have a downward sweep as they leave the body of the plane. Most airplanes (paper and full size) have an upward sweep. The downward sweep helps the plane stay in banked turn. An upward sweep makes the plane rock back to neutral.

@hellsrage619
I've got new video coming on all the planes. It should all be up on my site by the end of July. The delays have been painful for everyone involved.
You're right... it's all about the adjusting.

@ThePaperAirplaneGuy Sounds great i love paper airplanes, their a great way to pass time and fun to fly.

hey john does it really matter if the paper is a little bit thicker than normal? i was just wondering
pr0ph33r 1 year ago
@pr0ph33r

@3all0000sha
The better solution is to remove 22mm from the bottom of the page before you start folding.

this plane needs accuracy to work well.Right?
rishi5154 1 year ago
@rishi5154 Any flying machine needs accuracy to work well. This needs folding accuracy and attention to the adjusting details. Insist on the best from yourself and you'll get the best from the plane.

this is super hard

ok,i tried that with a regular A4 paper and as u can imagine it didnt happened so i removed 22mm and start over but it just cant turn back to me...everything that needs to be parallel is parallel and everything is symmetrical and it just flies straight(good flight though)... any suggestions?
lxX50CentXxl 1 year ago
actually i made it fly like a boomerang from my last try to make that plane and when i throw it it goes one of the ways but it doesnt go that way enough... so the plane is not comming right where I am and is landing like 1m away from me..do u know the reason?
lxX50CentXxl 1 year ago
@lxX50CentXxl Add some up elevator so that it will loop when you throw it straight. Getting it to boomerang back to you is like doing a loop sideways. The negative dihedral allows the plane to stay leaned over, and the up elevator will cause it to climb in a circle back to you. Make sure you're throwing the plane leaned over.
ThePaperAirplaneGuy 1 year ago
@ThePaperAirplaneGuy should i add only one elevator and is there a difference on which side i make it ? and just to add,the plane returns sometime with a loop but noth sideways but vertical...
lxX50CentXxl 1 year ago
@lxX50CentXxl Always add up elevator to both wings in a symmetrical way. I've seen this behavior before-- the plane almost seems to be stuck in upside down flight mode. Usually it means you've done a very good job of making the plane and a little up elevator will shift the balanced forces back to your favor.
