Interesting that many people don't know that it was Walter Lantz's wife who did the actual voice for Woody. This was said by not just his wife, but also Walter himself in a documentary of how Walter Lantz started and how Woody became a star.
Originally released in November 1940. Ben Hardaway, who co-wrote this one, helped create a similar character for Leon Schlesinger's studio in 1938, when he was a key writer and co-director...which eventually became Bugs Bunny. However, after Friz Freleng returned to the Schlesinger studio [from a disappointing period at MGM] at the end of 1939, Hardaway was sent back to the story department...and left Schlesinger in January 1940, joining the Lantz studio. For a time, Hardaway was Woody's voice.
0:00-0:21 This intro music is really catchy. I'm surprised that Universal Pictures didn't use it more often. It seems like the kind of tune that could be used for any type of cartoon made during the 1940s and even in cartoons today.
@CaptainOvide Here's a trivia for you. In this very first cartoon of Woody, famous voice actor Mel Blanc provided the voice for him. But that was just for this one. :)
A later Woody cartoon would have Woody and his nephew and niece making reference to putting a salt on a bird's tail. Could that be a nod to this Woody debut?

Woody sounds like Daffy Duck when he talks about tearing a guy limb from limb.

The Andy Panda cartoons were just as funny as the Woody Woodpecker cartoons, espicially with the cartoons that co-star his father!
