The great thing about jazz is that younger artists or artists in the same age group are so ready to acknowledge each influence of other players. And Joe Lovano gives a deep deep lesson in that acknowledgement and he's a heavy cat himself.
Thanks for posting this Bret, really good to hear what Joe says about Sunny Rollins, it's only when I hear comments like these, that I understand my own values and appreciations. Sonny is certainly a shining light as a musician and beautiful person also.
"The confidence to be yourself"! I love him too Joe. Thanks for taking a few minutes to talk to me last year. I told you about meeting Sonny and my conversation with him. He told me, "I got to practice every day!" Not a day has gone by in the last two years that I haven't had the horn in my mouth. Saw you with McCoy Tyner last week in Portland & you guys were killin' it. Thanks for this clip Bret.
well said joe... Now please got tell the scientists at CERN to study Sonny's brass hadron collider and all their little creation questions will be duly answered.
That was great. Someguy1000 had it right man. A master talking about a master. Really nice hearing Joe state his respect so eloquently. Joe has taken Sonny's "stream of consciousness" approach to a whole other level. Nice....Bryan
Sonny Rollins must have felt the same way about Bird and Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster and Lester Young. This world filled with so much hate has so much to gain from learning about this tradition. Sometimes these cats don't seem of this world. Joe Lovano is reaching, but words are so inadequate for what he's trying to express. Check out his playing, check out his playing and it's all there.
Joe Lovano is a master in his own right. It's intense hearing him try to put his heartfelt reverence for one of the greatest masters into words. I feel Sonny Rollin's' music so deeply, I sometimes wonder how a guy like Joe Lovano feels that music, it must be on a whole other level.
Joe says it all. One of the best things he said was that Sonny inspired him to be himself. That's what it's all about.
