I was blessed to see them in L.A. at the Palace back in the early 80's. Poor thing! She was terrified! People didn't understand her, but I was mesmerized! I'm still in love to this day!
I'd love to see an interview where Guthrie sat down and explained, in as much detail as he'd like, how the whole process of getting his sound went - from the concept to the speakers. I've heard some decent interviews with him, but he's always been pretty vague. Maybe he's been afraid of cons? He seems to be in pretty exclusive company as it is.
Maybe if we all collectively use the power of thought to get the Cocteau Twins to record again, maybe it wil happen. The genius of their recording history just makes you want more. The Go Betweens managed to do it.
Check out Rilkean Dreams posting and listen to the beauty at the end of Rilkean Heart before Half- Gifts starts. It will take your breath away, take you to a better place for 15 seconds and make your life a bit better for ever.
I was never blessed to see this band perform live. Being a lover of their music it's one of my biggest disappointments. I've never felt such raw emotion than when I see these old live feeds of this perfect group of performers. I cry with bliss.
I am devastated that I never got to seem them live.
People throw the word "brilliant" around a lot these days, but this band is one of the very, very few occasions in which the term is not only warranted, but, quite possibly, an understatement.
There are so many bands who have been either one-hit, one-album; or even no-hit wonders (pop idol, x factor etc) .... yet whilst all Cocteau Twins' albums are different I do not think they have made a duff track or a duff album.... ever!!!! I think Liz is still grieving over the loss of Jeff Buckley - as am I.
So sad about Jeff Buckley. I didn't like his original songs quite as much as his brilliant covers, but I firmly believe that his next album would've been amazing. I've often wondered where he would've taken us. I think he was well on his way to becoming the male equivalent of Liz Fraser.
And you're right about the Twins. Their albums are quite different. I have favorites, of course, but even their "worst" tracks are better than most other artists' "best."
Ah, this is where we differ. My fav' album of all time is 'Grace' by Jeff Buckley. At least it shows we are all individuals, which is important. I never judge or criticise someone who has a different 'take' on things - life is too short.
On Lullabies to Violaine, the Cocteaus play 'Winter Wonderland' and 'Frosty the Snowman'. How cool is that!!! Take care.
saw them at Glasgow barowlands '94. the sound and light were spot on. I was about 10 back at a standing venue.. the crowd was a sea of loving people.. and the band seemed to know it.. they played fantasticly.. Liz sung with gusto.. she sung "are you the right man for me? or are you to SICK for me?"
@skrason They were never known for their live performances until the very end. Milk and kisses was a great tour. Liz sang beautifully, they performed some classics like wax and wane and aloysius, their show featured drums (not drum machines), and mark clifford of seefeel lent his mixing talents. By the time they came to LA, I had just graduated from college ('96), and their show inaugurated a truly wonderful summer.
come può una voce illuminare le vette più alte dell'universo? eppure quella di Liz illumina l'intero firmamento e fa vibrare tutte le forme di vita in esso presenti!!!
What happens at 3:30 onwards on this video is absolute nirvana. An incredible groove beyond description in its coolness....wow...wish I could have been there on some good reefer....
Absolutely fantastic - been going through all the CT's live stuff on YT lately and this one has to be one of the greatest performances of all time. Liz is just phenomenal!!
Love this version. I bought the otherness cd because it has this song and as good as it is this live version is better by far. Thanks a bunch for this.
this band is ridiculous. the effect their songs leave me is unfathomable. i cant explain it..almost like im in another dimension..sounds cheesy, but this is serious, honest to god, great music.
the twins are great but what throws this over the top is the mix by mark clifford. seefeel reforming for a show in russia in october. almost worth flying in for.
A great performance which, as the track is off the Milk & Kisses album, 1995, must be one of their last performances. It's a tradgedy that this band didn't continue. I have some memory loss from epilepsy, but when I listen to Cocteau Twins music it takes me back to a special time in my life. Whilst listening I'm literally stunned and stopped in my tracks. I have to sit down and often end up with tears running down my face. Cocteau Twins: Unique, brilliant, obscure, fascinating, surreal, gone...
If you like the Cocteau Twins (obviously you do!), check out BIOMUSIQUE with Lisbeth Scott, I think you'll like her. She has that same breathy, celtic sound. The CD 10,000 steps just came out and is available everywhere. Her record label is Kosmic Music and they have audio you can check out.

oh finally a live version with the liz' divine aria included in the mix. its the aria that made this song very emotionally stirring. it breaks my heart when i hear it. knowing how she wrote this song for the late jeff buckley.
jordimla thanks for sharing that. I hadn't known the story but felt that it was the case. It was the title that gave it away , they both strike me as seekers. some of the lyrics indicate it as well.
It is such a beautiful piece and so very sad, filled with longing.
If there are angels floating around singin' and playing music, even they are fans of this woman...and as far as the words go anyones guess, but its all the same result: transcendence through exquisite music!!
funny watching the audience try figure how to dance to this. you just can't. ethereal, sublime.. this is art for making stoned love to. inexpicably beautiful. i'm touched...deep down.
I've been wanting to see this for SO long. The reason its so differnt to the album version is because its reworked by Mark Cliford from Seefeel (the same guy who did the 'Otherness' ep and the only person that the Twins ever trusted to touch their tapes and the guy i fell in love with as a teenager!).What a coming together of GIANTS!
i want to know what´s the meaning of this song, we don´t know exactly what she´s saying but i´d like to hear what u feel when u listen to this song or what is she talking about, i´m not an english speaker but for me this song means so much it always brings back my dear friend that died a year ago, when i listen this song is like he´s with me i was so into this song when he died
Exactly. The music industry would like to blame media piracy for their downfall, but show me a record today that is worth paying $15 for or with sounds I haven't heard before - Not many. I'd pay $20 per album tomorrow if there is anything this good.
it's a combination of severl things, i think. liz has always been a highly emotive, in-the-moment singer. plus, she began to improvise her melodies (bordering on the scat jazz style) in a live setting after 'heaven or las vegas.' for some of us, it was fascinating. however, in a lot of these performances you can see that she's just nervous.

but it is interesting that Robin picked, for the VIOLET INDIANA project, a singer so vastly different in every way from LIZ.
he wanted to explore an entirely different side of himself, subsequently the V/I material sounds nothing at all like C/T at any time- that in itself is remarkable.
