anyone thinking this would work: go peddle in a rowboat without removing the peddles from the water and tilting them... forward-backward-forward-backward... same with this apparatus, only with the difference that all the blades would negate each others lift-power to begin with...
lighter weigh and stronger materials are the key to success. thing how strong compact disc material is/are and how lightweight they are. There are many theories yet to be discovered. somebody will develop a human powered aircraft that will fly around the world eventually. maybe disc shaped is the way to go. more wings could help as well. never be affraid to try new ideas.
ahem "is the power generated by a person able to lift its own weight?" yes,given that you can generate a grater force then applied. for example lets say you run 5-10 mph you can move 20+ mph on a bicycle.that is a 2 gear machine start with a large gear and make them smaller you can get enough force for lift not much lift granted but lift.
@carcano38 he keep in mind he's never seen anything fly before except for a bird. His design got pretty close to a helicopter design. and he only gets one shot in a lifetime, it takes years to build something like this back then a alot. It took like a million tries to invent the airplane and the lightbulb, but at this tame more technologies and resources.
Seems weird that the head/neck can supply as much force as the legs and arms, but then again, Da Vinci studied anatomy so maybe he knew what he was talking about.
I can't believe that someone took the time to actually built a full size model of his design. I would be interested in the total weight of the craft. Looks like it would be 200 lbs plus the weight of the pilot who would be willing to risk his life in trying to fly it.

This design existed only in his mind and there were no examples except what little could be found in nature to draw inspiration for it. Its nearly the equivalent of designing a lunar module before rockets even existed. Pure unadulterated genius.
