It happened to me last month where I applied to a youth group home for practicum with school. I mentioned to them that I was hearing impaired, but use a cochlear implant and they wouldn't take me.
I would have lost it and freaked out at the barista... I'm just scared that people don't get the message that deaf people can do the same work as hearing and that this is just another example of why they don't have the hire a deaf person. i just hope it sparked positive conversation and true empowerment
I understand what is coming from because I'm hard of hearing and full time student in NTID. I had friends who had work experience before, there are lot of Deaf Discrimination and it hard to find the job. I think deaf world is small rather than biggest hearing world but that wasn't unfair. There are few deaf people in actress or actor, President of CEO. I wish the world need to change.
@Charmina26 And I hope the world see that and realize themselves that can be change, but sadly still discrimination, don't worry if we have civil right and stand up speak up and don't be afraid, but some deaf are afraid to speak up that is not going be easy.
If I ever saw something like this I really hope I would have the courage to speak up. As long as they are honest, ethical and willing to work hard, why not hire them??
That's the point. Be sure to check out the story about the shoot at ntid.rit.edu/news/what-would-you-do and watch the show on ABC Fri. 4/4/11 at 9 p.m. EST.
I can't wait to see the actual show.....this is wonderful experience, bring deaf to the hearing world, let them see what is really happening out there!

I'm sure the Barista would change their minds quickly about the Deaf if they were sued.

People think this is alright, but how's it alright when it is illegal?

i love that the hearing director looks directly at the deaf actors, and not at the interpreter! VERY RESPECTFUL!

Gosh, the scene around 5:30-6:30 makes me really uncomfortable, even knowing they're actors.
