Yes, good analogy. So many guitarists seem to equate playing fast with being good musically. This guy is interesting but he is really just talking about improving one's playing speed, which is a red herring. Sloppy technique can be great technique if it enables one to be more musical. What really is the point in 10 million guitarists around the world all trying to play as quickly as possible? Saying that, maybe this guy is a good player, who knows?

@WeveGotNoTimeToLose Maybe listen to Jeff Beck, Hendrix, Peter Green, Van Halen, Blackmore, Grant Green, Django etc. If you want more accurate technique for speed, play simple repetitive patterns to a metronome everyday and not too quick, and pick very lightly, but you probably know all this. If you slip up then it's too quick, slow down. Remember, no matter what many tutors say, there is no right technique for picking. I've been to Austin Texas (but not Houston), great music shops.

Shredding became sort of obsolete when computers got better, 'cuz U can run 'virtual music' programs 2 do this kind of scale-based krap. Put some FEELING into it. Evenly-spaced, same-volume, same timing type runs R BORING! It's just a wash of randome same-ness.
@Deathrape2001 Speed creates drama and anticipation dude.Those are feelings and emotions too and necessary if you want your solo to sound like a story.With its ups and downs and dramatic moments that resolve later in sustaining notes.If you play only that then yes its boring(just like if you are bending and vibratoing every single note would be).Listen to some classical music to see how dramatic moments are created and then come and talk to me about no emotions.
It would be much more astonishing, if your speech-rhythm would differ from the shred! My comment as musicologist: the faster you play, the more meaningless becomes the choice of notes! So, if you play this fast over a specific tonality, you only have to watch for the right finishing note! A problem which can always be solved by your hearing. If the last note appears to sound `false´: just change it a halfstep up or down. The consonance/dissonance-relation of tonality will always be 7 to 5! Ciao!

For example, the first scale i learned was the pentatonic scale. After that i playedwithout trying to remember where were the scale notes. But I've always thought, felt and apreciated what I was playing. In this video, exists an awesome speed but there is no feeling. Try to do a beautiful song while you talk with your neighbour. Music isnt fun when its mechanical. Its my opinion. Blablabla.
@m50ps3 Thoughts create a response in the body known as a feeling. If you think when you play your body will respond to your thoughts, not your sense perceptions. If you are silent inside as you are if you are focused 100% on the music, your emotions/feelings will be a reflection of the music you hear and play. Then your playing will come out of that feeling and you will be "in sync" with the band. Any thought that says "What am I going to play next" will push you right out of that feeling :)

It would be much more astonishing, if your speech-rhythm would differ from the shred! My comment as musicologist: the faster you play, the more meaningless becomes the choice of notes! So, if you play this fast over a specific tonality, you only have to watch for the right finishing note! A problem which can always be solved by your hearing. If the last note appears to sound `false´: just change it a halfstep up or down. The consonance/dissonance-relation of tonality will always be 7 to 5! Ciao!

For example, the first scale i learned was the pentatonic scale. After that i playedwithout trying to remember where were the scale notes. But I've always thought, felt and apreciated what I was playing. In this video, exists an awesome speed but there is no feeling. Try to do a beautiful song while you talk with your neighbour. Music isnt fun when its mechanical. Its my opinion. Blablabla.

@m50ps3 Thoughts create a response in the body known as a feeling. If you think when you play your body will respond to your thoughts, not your sense perceptions. If you are silent inside as you are if you are focused 100% on the music, your emotions/feelings will be a reflection of the music you hear and play. Then your playing will come out of that feeling and you will be "in sync" with the band. Any thought that says "What am I going to play next" will push you right out of that feeling :)

@m50ps3 Exactly! Malmsteen has chops, but who sells records? Stevie Ray... Paul Gilbert just brought out an, IMO: A GREAT shred record! But who's more successful now? Joe Bonamassa... Why fucking learn to play without thinking?! That's what's music is all about... And it only takes a 17 year old music student to conclude this. Grow up 'shredders' Who GOES to shred gigs? Guitar players... Real guitarists write for the people who don't play... This is why Jimi did so well.. Play the FUCK up!...

@ScageyGuitarist Why learn to play without thinking? To master the act of playing your instrument. And I'm eager to understand your definition of a 'real guitarist'. People who write for people who don't play? Anyone with a guitar and 2 weeks of experience can do that. The reason people like this aren't playing ''hey joe'' or ''all along the watchtower'' is cause they mastered those songs after 6 months and moved on to more challenging stuff. Drop the semi spiritual bullcrap. It's getting old.
