Lol, the government knows people use it for pot, they just make money off of head shops, so they don't give a fuck. The plant itself is illegal because if it was legal, the lumber industry would likely be shut down, and the government assumes that they will lose money if that happens. They would probably make a shit ton of money if they legalized it from hemp production, and head shops all across the country. Think about how much weed you actually buy every year, and multiply that by millions =O

Cannabis is illegal because in 1937 William Randolph Hearst teamed up with Harry Anslinger to take down the hemp industry. They did this by producing articles depticting blacks and ethnic's smoking "marihuana", going crazy, raping white women, etc. In effect a tax was put on hemp and later outlawed. In 1970 Nixon declared the war on drugs, and that is how cannabis became illegal =D

Because over the years, the government has done a very good job at keeping the public ignorant to the facts, spreading propaganda from 1937-1970. In 1970 Nixon started the "War on Drugs" because apparently drugs were the biggest threat. But no, the war on drugs was started arrest all the people who were protesting against the Vietnam war. Now if you could eliminate all those people who were smoking pot, you wouldn't have a vietnam war protest. After this the propaganda stil kept people ignorant.

Now that you know that, let's skip to president reagen's "war on drugs" policy. Reagen claimed that drugs were a "menace to society" and promised people drug free schools and such. His wife even is the founder of the "Just say no" campaign, which we all know worked SO well. In 1986 Reagan signed a bill to give 1.7 billion dollars to the war on drug's budget. Basically, the DEA lives and breathes on Marijuana, and if it were to become legal, they wouldn't have a job anymore. THAT is why.
