If you look on the trucks, there are an extra set of what looks like brake cylinders around the center axle, but those are what shifts the weight of the engines around (they actually say "NOT A BRAKE CYLINDER" on them). These were meant for intermodal and manifest service, not heavy unit trains.
The biggest pieces of shit we've ever invested in since the 500 series. Feels like you're being beat to death while going down the tracks at 60-70 mph.
Just another stupid GE idea that will probably cause more problems in the long run. I agree with the comment below that they should just build some 4 axle units and find something that actually WILL last a while instead of just 'experimenting'...like that NS 6785 you saw later on and the CSX 8157! Awesome video(s)!!! Thumbs up!
Why would a railroad want a locomotive that big with A-1-A trucks? I know GTW/CN had a few A-1-A SD40's but nothing newer than that. Also I am probably the last to ask but that bell is a recording isn't it?
apparently, the trucks arch themselves a little bit at low speeds to put more weight on the outer axles, the ones with motors. its supposed to give them better starting proformance than normal trucks. plus, the normal radial trucks on the ES engines SUCK royally. theyre always in the shops with problems.
@blizzard4800 I have seen ES44C4 6704 personally, and appearently BNSF has ordered up to 6734. BNSF has converted a long-standing order of DCs to C4s. Who knows how many more they'll get.
That's true. I'm really at a loss as to why they quit using them, they seemed to be reliable enough. Why spend money on new locos when the ones you've already got work fine?
Yeah, I know. DX But the FL9 is a 567-engined loco, right? There are plenty of Geeps left...possibly it pertains to city-owned things only, dunno *shrug*
dont you think 6601 might have shit itself?

Yes, GE has a testing car that they use.

What was the car in the middle? A testing car of some type?

If I'm not mistaken, GE #6000 is (was) the original C60AC unit.

My bad... A1A-A1A is E8/9 & this vid is just an example of A1A.
CurtisTuch 1 year ago
A1A: Two 6-wheel trucks, with motors on the outer axles of each truck; center axle unpowered. Kinda like early 1950s EMD locs... e.g. E8's & E9's

It is a cost savings. GE built 25 of this new model for BNSF. I have read about mixed results on these loco's.
blizzard4800 2 years ago
Kinda surprising, I figured they'd look somewhere else besides removing some of the traction motors O.o XD
I wonder how much less these cost as opposed to traditional C-C.

Wait, A1A?! as in, the middle axle on each truck isn't powered?!
SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
You are correct! The middle axle has no traction motor.
blizzard4800 2 years ago
What is the reasoning for this? I haven't seen a new A1A-trucked loco since the ALCo PA. XD
SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
What about the FL9? The FL9 didn't start production until 1956, while the PA's production ended in 1953.
fafnir242 2 years ago
Close enough. XD Also, the FL9 only had the A-1-A truck on the rear.
SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
True, but I figured it still counted. Just wanted to throw my two cents in.lol
fafnir242 2 years ago
You are actually like me in that respect. XD
Sucks about the New Haven FL9's...=(
SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
Oh, did they get rid of them? If so, that's a damn shame... Beautiful old workhorses.
fafnir242 2 years ago
Yep, they sure did. There's a video on here somewhere. They were retired; not sure where they'll end up from here.
SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
God, I hope one ends up in a museum around here somewhere. If Monticello could pick one up, that would be amazing.
fafnir242 2 years ago
I can't imagine that they'll just let them get torched.
At least, I sure as hell hope not...
SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
They'd better not torch them. They're beautiful, not to mention the last covered wagons in daily operation.
fafnir242 2 years ago

SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
I don't know. Maybe there's something about the FL9s that we don't know. Who can really say at this point?
fafnir242 2 years ago
That could be true. Maybe it's an emissions thing or something.
SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
Oooo, I didn't think about the Tier II emissions stuff.... Son of a.....

Meh, who's to say, really? The only people who really know are the people down at CDOT.
fafnir242 2 years ago
Again, this is true. I wish they'd tell us, though.
SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
Still, they haven't made an official decision what to do with them. Maybe it's a temporary thing. *prays*
fafnir242 2 years ago
Boy, that sure would be nice.
SpeakerPolice 2 years ago
Yep, even though I live nowhere near Connecticut and will probably never see an FL9 for as long as I live.lol
