Because it was a strike year. The big talent was on strike and the defensive coordinators back then cared about big hits, not smart plays. defensive audibles were unheard of.

They wouldnt try to touch rice because he would burn them deep if they tried something like that- most of the time.

Randy didnt destroy it because by now, teams don't want to let one player run all over them so they make schemes to target them.

I like your logic, my only contention is that Moss put up RIDICULOUS numbers at the convergence of both eras, 90s-early 2000 when you could still touch a receiver after 5 yards, and todays game(more Offense oriented). Moss has had, if my memory's correct 17+ tds over 3 times, Rice=once. Rice played with 2 of the top 7 Qbs ever, Montana and Young, Moss has played with Gus Frerrotte, B.Johnson, etc. and has put up great numbers regardless...Rice is a legend, but Moss is the greatest of all-time.

Moss made Randal Cunningham look young again, he made Culpepper look like a star and..if the raiders had a "good" QB, he might have made him look better too but even rice wouldnt have done well there. He helped the Pats break a scoring record (tht his old team held).
