I believe that civilisations can gain knowledge, lose it and discover it again through another path. This might explain isolated advanced technology in ancient civilisations. I doubt that we are smarter than we were 5000 years ago. Just that our technology is built on previous technology, step by step. If a guy from 5000 years ago and I were asked to build a nuclear reactor then both our results would suck. Doesn't mean that either of us are stupid.
