This object appear circles the earth quite a bit - saw it just now and over a dozen times in the past on DISH Earth - surprised there isn't more info out there about this. Could this be 3753 Cruithne (earth's supposed second moon) ?

How come there's no time stamp on the video? ... The transmissions of Dish Earth have the current time stamped on the video.... On the other hand, I watch Dish Earth on a regular basis and I'm convinced that UFOs show on the broadcasting.

I believe it is a piece of satellite debris.

It is probably small. It is probably went pretty close to Echostar. It may NOT be trackable by Norad since this geo-synchronous orbit is 23500 miles up. Since it is probably small and close to Echostar, its difference in velocity compared to Echostar is small. it took a fairly long time to traverse the field of view. I suspect it is some hunk of metal from one of the many satellites that sit in that equatorial orbit.

What are all of the specks? I thought, at first, that they were stars but now I believe they are dust specks on the camera lens. The same kind of specks are over the darkened surface of the earth as well...and those are certainly not stars. Since the satellite is geocentric, it rotates with the Earth and the stars, would not be in the same location at all times. The shadowing shows the surface of the lens...as can be seen in a focault tester when testing the surface of a lens.

Unless one can see through the Earth, that object did not go around the Earth but in front of it because as it reappears on the left side of the Earth it appears much sooner than it would if it would have emerged from the back side of the Earth.

it does look a bit like a tumbling asteroid, some distance out from earth. if you pay enough attention, you can see the shape of it. you can also tell from the reflectivity of the object that it must be an asteroid or meteor of some sort passing by earth.

Probably a small asteroid. We just don't have that much space junk up at that altitude. Most of it's down lower in orbit.

As for stars, go learn a thing or two about photography, exposure settings, etc.

That is in fact a NASA standard issue thermos, with tomato soup that must be a tad cold. It is on a eliptical orbit from a shuttle mission to the ISS. Someone left it on the roof and took off for work- "Doh!!"

You can resolve the object, which is in a flat spin. Think about what that means.Either it's absolutely huge, or it's very close to the spacecraft. The latter seems far more likely. There was probably a spacecraft maneuver that dislodged a piece of insulation or something.

I agree with philkarn. It's just a little piece of something drifting away from the satellite. Go slowly through the video frame by frame and it's apparent.

Sounds plausible. It's moving way too slow to be anything else, even another object in GEO would be highly unlikely to be caught so close. This is a wide-angle camera so either the object was very close, or was very huge and moving practically coorbital with the satellite. Common sense suggests it's the former - a piece of debris shed from the satellite.
