  • 1 dislike? Guess Raoul's on youtube

  • i love how patrick troghton did so many hammer films as well as so much dr who

  • Many say that Grant was possibly going to be the phantom or Harry, but he might have been D'Arcy, actually, especially as he wanted to be a villain in a horror film.

  • It is quite popular with Hammer Fan. Well, at least the ones I have known. Hammer has its own fanbase and whilst this film differs from the Hammer style - despite being directed by Terence Fisher who pretty much created the Hammerverse's distinctive style and film - the subtle style works well and it is probably the most personal of all of Fisher's films. And it is probably one of my favourite, if not my ultimate favourite (I am drawn between this and the 20s version) of the story.

  • have it

  • I don't like this version.. :(

  • try this at home kids, see how it goes xd

  • This is the first version of the Phantom I saw as a child and my favorite by far. The atmosphere is creepy, the colors beautiful. Herbert Lom is fantastic in this role.

  • I've always thought that the got his face disfigered by the flame

  • I remember getting my bf to record this for me and watching it together. He isnt really taken with old school horror but I find something rather fun in Hammer horror films. Saddly I was distracted a fair bit by Christine's beastly etebrows. lol

  • Great review! This is my favorite version, and I saw it FOUR times the week it opened in 1962. The DVD restores MOST of the horror censored for TV. But in the original, the Phantom does strangle Darcy to death in the upstairs office before Christine's debut. So what we have is still slightly altered and incomplete. But otherwise I LOVE the ending. This is also one of my favorite scores.

  • 1:52 what did you say the music was? I couldn't understand.

  • @llmuto25 Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by John Sebastian Bach.

  • phantom pimp slap . mwahahaha

  • Imagine if the phantom was played my Christopher Lee.

  • Sir, the Hammer Horror version is currently being uploaded again here on YouTube. A YouTuber called LerouxsPhantom is uploading it. She just recieved it. You should check into it in your spare time.

  • is it true that the guy who played the phantom in this verion also played in the pink panther 2 and up as the inspectors boss? if so the one scene makes sence to me now. they mimic this movie i wonder if there is a clip of it on youtube. if i find it i will post it.

  • Herbert Lom gives a great performance, but it would've been awesome to have seen Christopher Lee. That man is phenomenal.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I think this Christine's adorable. She's almost as cute as Teri Polo in the Charles Dance version.

  • @jazzandmint Herbert Lom is still alive. He's about 92 years old. He might live up to 100 or more. Let's hope he stays strong.

  • Phantom Reviewer, do you know an online site where this movie is available to watch? This movie's not here on YouTube. I thought I should ask you.

  • @SelenaGomezFan10001 Oh, it used to be on here, but cant find it now...not sure where else you can get it, other than Ebay or maybe Amazon

  • @PhantomReviews Y'know something? The Hammer Horror Collection DVD Boxset includes this movie. I think I might get it for christmas. I dunno yet. Thanks anyway, sir.

  • @SelenaGomezFan10001 Its on here, under LerouxsPhantom. ^^

  • @iheartslashers I know. I just watched it a while ago. Great movie. Two Phantom movies I haven't seen now are the Max Schell version from 1983 and the Robert nglund version from 1989. Both of those are also under LerouxsPhantom. I will check those out soon. Thank you for the reply, though.

  • @SelenaGomezFan10001 It's here on youtube, by LerouxsPhantom :)

  • @iheartslashers I know that, already. I saw it. It was great. Herbert Lom was also in a Stephen King movie. You should check it out. @PhantomReviews You too, Phantom Reviewer.

  • Herbert Lom gives a masterful performance in this underrated film.

  • 0:30 Random Béla Lugosi!

  • I just bought the Hammer collection a couple months back which includes this version of the Phantom and loved it!Very underrated movie!

  • and hes the only one i know who throws fireballs in a broadway musical and makes things burst into flames... GO ERIK HOPE U KICK MORE ASS IN LOVE NEVER DIES!!!!

  • Wow! I really want to see this version! If I do it will be the 5 version....(I think) that I've seen, and I make a point to see all of them except for the Dario what's-his-last-name one, that one is soooooooooooo perverted it's not even funny.

And I love your reviews, they always make me laugh....a lot.....and a lot..... XD

  • u kno this christine isnt really pretty

  • I've seen worse. There's this 1977 Hunchback movie with an ugly Esmeralda. They can get away with a plain Christine much more because he's in love with her in general (although in this version he only cares about her voice), but an ugly chick's supposed to have driven some Catholic priest insane with lust?

  • maybe the priest was so ugly that he thought the onl way to get lucky was with an ugly chick. Way to set the bar low padre, stick to being a priest

  • @smarterthanmyclass Isn't the point that she has a beautiful voice?

  • Okay, the only reason we like Raoul in this version, is because there is no romance between Christine and the Phantom, which people constantly seem to like better, for some reason, and because of this, they hate Raoul, who is never annoying! It's just because they feel sorry for the Phantom that they hate Raoul, that's all. Stupid really...

  • I think it's kind of weird that when the one man pours the acid on the table, it starts burning it pretty bad. I didn't think that the acid used in printmaking was that strong. I mean, in my printmaking studio, we have the acid in a plastic bucket for when we do copper plate etchings and aquatints. *shrug* I don't know why you would want to use a stronger acid, it really only takes about 5 minutes to get the plate adiquately etched.

  • I think this version and the 1925 & 1943 versions were the best film versions ever made.

  • this was the very first phantom film i ever watched

  • Its a shame some Phantom fans don't like this film. I think this is a pretty cool version, because it subverts expectations and is very different amongst various Phantom films, which I think works in its favor. its not perfect of course, but it has more hits than misses of course.

  • The fact that the Rat-Catcher in this version is the 2nd Doctor from Doctor Who is probably the funniest thing ever.

    XD Your reviews rock.

  • Oh dear lord it is him!!! XD Now I've seen everything..

  • XD Heehee! (Love your username, by the way. MST3K!)

  • YAY! I've been waiting to see someone make the connection :D

And it's funny, I had just watched another Hammer film a few days ago and there was the 2nd Doctor YET AGAIN as the hunchbacked lackey!

  • as you can see ansi explained in the 40s version you can now see how most of the theatre has been removed

  • :) I like your thoughts about the Raoul character. This is the last version I really feel like I must see.

  • Very clever review, love the Cary Grant voice-over! I agree,

it has a great deal of atmosphere. I was a small kid when

I first saw this in the theatre, at the time, had not seen any other version, and was fascinated by it. Great job!

    Thanks - Cortlandt

  • The dwarf should compare notes with "Cyanide and Happiness"s Purple-Shirted Eye-Stabber ...

  • I love this version, Herbert Lom is oscarworthy!

  • I love your reviews! I know you've probably heard this before, but are you planning on reviewing the 1990 TV series version?

    Again, great stuff! Much thanks!

  • The next reviews are : 1987 Cartoon version, Phantom of the Mall, a suprise (VERY rare piece of Phantom nonsense), and then the Charles Dance version.

  • Yay I've been waiting on the cartoon. Try not to be too mean.

  • Good review. Now I'll have to re-watch this version. I haven't seen it in several years.

  • So glad this one got a good review. You were dead right about the Spanish one being a mess... This however has a fine performance from Lom and some of the best music in any Hammer film.

  • This was the first Phantom film I had seen, years ago when I was a kid. It was back in the 1970's on a local weekly TV spot called "Creature Feature." (They showed old horror movies every week.) I have a lot of good memories about this film and defend this Phantom in my review at my site.

  • This was my second Phantom film and it scared the freak outta me! I love it now of course so thanks for another great review. Tres bien!

  • Cary Grant as the Phantom? I adore Cary but I can't picture him at all as Phantom.

  • According to producer Anthony Hinds, it was the Edward de Souza role (the romantic hero) that was originally written for Cary Grant. It's in the (excellent) book Hammer Films: The Bray Studio Years by Wayne Kinsey.

  • Aha! Thanks for that piece of info. I could see Cary as the romantic hero.

  • I've watched this version. It's a little too creepy for me. I think it was interesting, although it wasn't like many other hammer horror films. It had an overall dark feel to it, not a real "phantom" feel for me.

One of my pet peeves is when the phantom isn't deformed his whole life. For me it takes away alot of whom the phantom is.

    another good review!
