They TRY to make the translation funnier but it usually end up poor at best (and i'm not just talking about this anime). Personnally I always preferred the original because the texts are better and voice acting is actually seen as a profession in japan rather than an actor sideline to make the end meet.

Well, I almost always appreciate the dub better because first of all, all of the voices sound different and the context of what they are saying just flows better for me.

I'm not a fan of subtitles when: A) It changes the entire story or what the original story is trying to convey. B) They just don't make sense or aren't fluid-like, because sorry, I'm not fluent in every language.

And maybe it is held as a career there because there is so much of it there, there isn't really any cartoon industry in America that is as popular as japanese anime, so it's pretty hard to find something original to voice act for.

It's true that, even though they try to get a different seiyu (voice actor) for every character they tend to sound pretty similar and when more than one character speaks at the same time it's hard to tell who's saying what.

As for subtitle some are bad some are good; personnally I prefer fansub than professional because the fan-subber (usually) stick more to the original stories and give comments on the japaneses cultural reference so that it is easier to understand from a non-japanese view.

Personnally I think it's easier to change a story with dub than sub (and some cheap company like 4kids do it with pride :P) because you don't have the original work as a reference. While with sub you have to be more carefull because some fan with just a basis in japanese (like me) can sometime spot when the sub don't match with what was said (and I know people that are more fluent in japanese than me that spot those mismatch even faster :P). But overall is a matter of personal preferences :)

As for the professionalism of voice acting in anime I've made a little experience with the animatrix. I've listen to the same story in all 3 available languages (japanese, english and french).

The japanese seiyu were very in the character like they were living it; the english voice actors emotions were more like that of a witness telling a story and the french sounded more like some peoples discussing about some story over a café au lait :P

I think japanese vu on anime vs live action is influenced by the thing you can add to story in an anime that does not look half as good while transposed in live action. It's easy to understand what i'm saying when you see, often lame, live-action adaptation of popular anime; the stories are good but they can't (or, like in the case of cutey-honey transformation won't :P) recreate some of the puns that made the original work catchy, mainly because japanese special F/X are like 20 years behind :P
