For everyone correcting him. He indicates that the shadow of a match in the center of the watch will lay on the hour had. Meaning that the hour hand is facing AWAY from the sun. In that case his mark between the hour and 12 would be north. If he were to use the method which you are discussing, having the hour hand face TOWARDS the sun, then it would indicate south.
I just lay on my back naked with wood and the shadow tells me the time, true north and what month it is. This skill has been used by time travelers for thousands of years, also it's a great way to hunt bears. Thank you for your time, that is all.
The point between the Hour hand pointing at the Sun and the number 12 on your watch should be pointing at the South if your in the Northern hemisphere not pointing to the North ; )
wow... how confusing, this is titled for "northern" hemisphere, but I couldn't get it to work. Thankfully the comments below indicate that these instructions are actually for the "southern" hemisphere... VeZoomPopular, it might be helpful to correct this.
I have a small button compass on my watch and I use this method along with the compass for verification of direction. Used many times, in the Army, and with great results. Amazing how accurate. This method and dead reckoning are important navigation skills to possess.
I assume that you are in the southern hemisphere because In the northern hemisphere such as in the USA the midpoint between the hour hand 12 o'clock is south. Not north.
@Liv2Ride1958 not true, it depends on if it is before noon or after noon, is is easyer to make the half betveen 8 o`clock ( 20PM) and 12 in the interval betveen 8 and 12 ( 8-9-10-11-12 - middle is10) and say it is north as it is harder to get middle from 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-12 and say it is south..... so must think it is not true if you are before noon like 11AM...... i wonder if in winter springtime or in octoberare there errors because of the different position of the Sun on sky
@401Hammer digital watch can be used also. Just position yourself in relation to the sun using the position on the watch where the hour hand would be if the watch had hands.
@Ikefis ... and it follows that if you are any good at estimating the time by the position of the sun esp. at high noon, you can work off this time to picture the clock hands mentally and get a decent bearing- still better than wandering aimlessly, I reckon.
Depends on if it is daytime or night time in norway the sun is up to atleast 22 maybe 23:00 in the evening in the summer. then the Left side of the watch would indicate the night time and the right side daytime.
If the sun peaked at the horizon, it points exactly east right? and so by the clock method, it's suggesting that the west is 12 o'clock... does that mean the sun always rises at 6 :. N is 3 (when the sun peaks)? that's a bit presumptuous...
@littlemute Sun follows an east to west pattern...as does the moon. when you point the hour hand at the sun or moon you are either pointing approximately east or west, thus the midpoint of the hour hand and 12 will be approximately north or south depending upon which hemisphere you are in.(and before you ask) South is you are in the northern Hemisphere!
As I learned it, you point the hour hand toward the sun. True south! is between 12 o'clock and the hour hand! But it just occured to me, thay you might be in the southern hemisphere. Also, you don't mention, if the watch or clock is set to daylight savings time, you must set it back one hour for this to work properly! GeeZ!
well it depends which Hemesphere of the world your in.. if your in the northern (top half) of the world then it is pointing North... if your in the other its pointing South.
Cool. There is 2 other ways I know how to do this, both without a match/stick/whatever and without a clock/watch.
Just a watch: Point the hour hand at the sun. Find the mid point(like demonstrated in the vid). The midpoint is South.
Put a stick in the ground vertically. Mark where the shadow is with a rock. Wait 15 mins. Then mark the new shadow. If you draw a line from the first rock to the second rock that is the east/west directions.

@Ikefis right-o! as long as you know the correct time, you can guess accurately where the hand would be and where the 12 would be.

@maximilian333 surprising how many doubt this. Thanks

@stankinlincoln ... best practice is to *correlate* results from 2-3 methods in case you've screwed up one method.
