No doubt the original Conan was inspired by the Teutons and the times right before birrth of Xhrist. Conan is actually more intellectuals than his contemporaries and yet more barbarian. He is not a pure race. Instead he has black hair, reminescent of american indians, and a body more like the goths. Thus, he is an outlier and a cynic, and while not great looking he is a more witty and skillful fighter than the rest. Hence he gets into and survives all the strange adventures.
