You really can't put it into words, can you? It's wonderful! I would love to meet Lars von Trier and pick his brain. He has got to be an incredible person. And I just adore Emily! I think she's so pretty!
This film stunned me when I first saw it. Emily Watson was incredible and if you analyse this film it probably is the most powerful movie ever about love and what it stands for.
OMG you had to post the scene that made me bawl like a baby. Emily Watson in Breaking the Waves is by far the greatest performance ever given by actress EVER. I can't name or think of one that I've seen that was better and I've seen a LOT of great performances. This is the best ever. The most raw performance ever.
This is important: Braking the waves will change your perspectives. It is one of a kind, and is a major contribute to story telling in movies. DON'T MISS IT! Praised by Dustin Hoffman and other respected actors... JUST DO IT! YOU CANNOT MISS THIS ONE!!!!
I really think she did save him, on the dying scene, Dodo tells her that he was dying. Lars von trier is a genius. Keep up the good work man (like he would see this)
(LVT comment)Yes, she saved him. While prior to her death it seems to have been in vain, and she dies in that belief, she saves him. It's a mythical and strangely religious idea. I watched it way back with 3 friends. The whole row, friends and strangers, just looked at each other at the end, and you heard people sobbing from all corners. If you're not infantile or emotionally retarded, it is probably the most emotionally devastating movie I've seen.
I agree with ur idea, and well i saw it a year ago exactly, with a cultural group... discussing some of lars von trier work. My friend stood up to clap at the end.. i just stared at the screen .. really amazed by the whole plot and the final moments. Its a well developed movie, i really loved the funeral part... she became a whore for love man.. thats unique.
She was persecuted and reviled by everyone just like Christ was. I am not a religious fanatic by any means but this movie totally blew me away and ripped my guts out. God did hear her and took her to heaven even though her own townfolk condemned her to hell, hence the bells ringing when they were on the boat. Most brilliant moving movie I have ever seen.
This is a parable? analogy? of Jesus sacrificing himself for everyone else. She knowingly willingly gave up her life to save her husband because her faith was so strong she knew he would live & recover. She was NOT crazy obviously. She did save him.
No she is not crazy. It is because she was like Christ and very close to God. She believe and totally sacrifices herself for her husband like Jesus did for everyone. Because she was very close to God, and did what she did, it worked, her husband was cured. Continued
This performance is definitely in my top 3! It's incredible and Watson deserved every award that came her way! Lars Von Trier is also incredible!

I think it's not possible to make a better performance. I hear Helena Bonham Carter was supposed to act in this role. I dunno:-.
