She is one of the most amazing performers of the day. If you get a chance, see her in a smaller recital setting - it allows you to better appreciate the nuances and details of her performance. Saw her perform a recital for a few hundred at Norfolk last summer - it was a life changing experience! I just sat in my seat OPENLY WEEPING at the beauty and vulnerability of her work. Got to meet her afterwards, and she's SO NICE, too! Fantastic singer! Fantastic artist! Fantastic person!
This is the correct tempo - faster than it is usually sung. Mozart marks it Andante, not Adagio. Also, there is a letter written in 1815 by a member of the audience who heard Mozart direct the opera, and he specifically notes that Mozart took a quick tempo and that the aria was sung very passionately. I would, however, take issue with some stylistic points in her performance, particularly the legato 8ths up to the high Bb, which are marked staccato in the score.
really way too fast to be painful in any way. expressive only in an art song context not really so much as an aria. really a less enjoyed performance because of quality rather than quantity
Dawn Upshaw is and has been my favorite diva and songbird for over 22 years. Her voice is just exquisite and her presence is just outstanding. I've seen her perform in person 6 times and have been able to talk with her backstage or at a reception each time. I believe this is recorded from a CD of "Die Zauberflote" that James Levine conducts. I do have a recording of it. And she is continuing with her singing and teaching career after surviving breast cancer. Brava, diva Dawn!
You are divine!!!!!!! I love your voice!!!!:*

Although Anna Moffo is my favorite interpreter on this tune, this tempo here is a good idea, it works. And the singing is heavenly.

Perfect in every possible way, but a little too fast for my taste.

I like her timbre on this one. I do not, however, like the upbeat tempo. It sounds more frenzied than longing and painful.

Es ist ein wenig schnell, aber es dauert nicht aus der brillanten Interpretation von Dawn Upshaw.

My voice teacher strongly emulated Dawn Upshaw. Sings just like her really. She talked about Dawn Upshaw all the time.

Dang, if someone had told me I could do it at this tempo, maybe I'd have had a chance! Nobody like D.U. though.

...una voce bellisima e tecnicamente pulita, mantiene una sonorità sempre uguale e molto espressiva...

@tsarstepan She has a great voice, indeed. But to this day, the world has never heard a sound more fabulous than Kathleen Battle's voice.
