The problem I have with the way this is phrased is that it implies that Scientology being a scam is somehow an "alternative" to it being a religion - the way the question is phased implies it cannot be both, and I find that to be dishonest bullshit designed to placate religious people's sensibilities. Yes, it can be both a religion, and be a dishonest scam. Most religions are just as dishonest, but their origins were so long ago that we're more used to their lies as being commonplace.
This Scientology is just another sad sign of the harsh reality of how truly lost so many people in the world are today and there is so many sick cruel heartless human beings out there willing make millions from that loneliness.
Is Tom Cruise and all these other celebs really that stupid to believe the stories of a science fiction writer to be actually true? The Catholic Church maybe no angels and have many many faults including a higher archery that needs to go but at least in todays day and age the don't force you to leave your family and take all or you money and valuables just so can believe you are going to a better place or that you will find true happiness.
Scientology is an extremely dangerous greedy unscrupulous SATANIC criminal cult!!! Scientology Kills, Scientology ruins lives, abuses children, lies, deceit protects rapists, forced abortions, uses intimidation to silence, splits up families, assault, defamation, false imprisonment and fraud, false reports, litigious, families losing their life savings, No ot powers, Tommy Davis is a liar. David Miscavige beats his staff, Criminal Enterprise, TOXIC ORGANIZATION, Stiffs Contractors, HAIL SATAN !
Was SCIENTOLOGY FOUND GUILTY OF ORGANIZED FRAUD IN FRANCE, hmoob7?
Did Head of LATAM's OT Ambassadors OT8 Mary Jo Leavitt FINALLY LEAVE IT [$cn]? (pun intended) What of OT8 Sherry Katz & the only ever OT8 in Norway?
All 3 did so noisily. Did u get the memo?
What about Oscar & award winning director, Paul Haggis, who's speaking out against DISCONNECTION of family, friends & loved ones & FAIR GAMING critics? (that supposedly DO NOT exist in $cn anymore)
Do u want to know the diff between the two? The Pope & others, though they directly or indirectly tried to hide it & sweep it under the rug, eventually settled with the victims
In $cientology's case, they would have "SP declared" the molested children, their parents and anyone who criticized $cn for their crimes & then "FAIR GAMED" them all & tried to discredit, ruin them utterly or, if at all possible, destroy them.
SP = Suppressive Persons (most evil people on the planet)
Scientology uses a system of bait-and-switch in various ways, and the cross is one of them. Because their symbol looks like a cross (it is actually a crossed-out cross, where they claim each corner represents a "dynamic"), they can fool people into thinking they are a religion just like Christianity. they have also added the word "church" to their name for that reason.
One of the most valuable books I borrowed from my dad's shelf when I was a youngster was Sargeant's "The Mind Possessed". I think it should be required reading at high school. Most people are unaware of just how malleable the human mind is, and the things I learned from that book acted as an inoculation against cults of all kinds (including religions) throughout my development into an adult. I highly recommend it.
"It is the firm conclusion of this Board that most scientology and dianetic techniques are those of authoritative hypnosis and as such are dangerous ... the scientific evidence which the Board heard from several expert witnesses of the highest repute ... leads to the inescapable conclusion that it is only in name that there is any difference between authoritative hypnosis and most of the techniques of scientology." - Report of the Board of Enquiry into Scientology by Kevin Victor Anderson 1965
paul Haggis learned that, in a CNN interview, Tommy Davis had laughed off the idea that Scientology has a policy of "disconnection." Haggis couldn't believe he was watching Davis "lying." His own family had suffered from disconnection when 18 months ago, his wife, actress-turned-producer Deborah Rennard was ordered to "disconnet" from her parents because of something Scientology officials claimed occured when they resigned from the church 25 year ago.
As a former Clearwater Fl resident who saw Scientology members up close, you dont have to be a psychologist ( wonder why they bad mouth them?) to know these people are brainwashed.
As an electronic engineer, the e-meter is a wheatstone bridge circuit ( get any answer you want). Its a fraud and tax payers pay for this operation.Today France ruled what is so obvious to anyone with an open mind.Scientology is a money making operation
Why is it that evidence of duplicity, scare tactics, power-grabbing, and outright lying is considered reason to not call an organization a religion? There's plenty of precedent for calling such behavior religious. The only difference is that with Scientology, we get to see it happening at the beginning of a new religion instead of having to delve into the past to see it.
"Scientology has opened the gates to a better World. *It is not a psycho-therapy nor a religion.* It is a body of knowledge which, when properly used, gives freedom and truth to the individual." -- The Creation of Human Ability, A Handbook for Scientologists, L. Ron Hubbard, 1954. My emphasis.

Perhaps I just missed it, but did this entire report air without once mentioning that you have to pay to be a Scientologist? I understand that they couldn't possibly cover everything: Narconon, RPF, Fair Game, Disconnection, etc. etc. But you think the money thing would have been something worth mentioning...
Well in order to gain tax-exempt status as a religion from the IRS, scientologists faught a legal battle over some 25 years - with more than 2000 lawsuits filed agains the IRS. They finally won in 1991, when the IRS basicaly backed down and settled for an agreement.
Nowdays, Scientology has thousands of lawyers, scientologists aswell, all of them willing to work for free to fight for the cult.
It would be inconcievable to try to pull the tax exempt from them, the IRS knows that very well..
The main problem I have with Scientology is that when I personally went to their NYC location, I feel that they didn't think I was important enough to talk to because I am not famous or am not pretty.
They seem to be caught up in how people look. All their spokespeople are very handsome.
If that's the only main problem you got from them - coming off and appearing as shallow - then that's actually the least of your worries. If you research Scientology on the internet and the horror of ex-scientologists and long-time critics of Scientology's abuses, you'll learn that it is much more - a sinister organization that drains the life savings of its members, breaks up families, and harasses critics by abusing the legal system.
The issue is that no other religion charges you money before telling you what the religion is all about. In order for consumers to make a reasoned choice they must have the facts on what they are buying.
Tithes are voluntary. Donations are REQUIRED to advance to "salvation" in Scientology. People are never told give 12K to other churches/mosques or Jesus/Muhammad won't save you.

hmoob7: have you seen the latest -- scientology has to pay $900,000.00 in france for screwing it's members over. and how about paul haggis leaving the cult.
So did you molest a cousin? Do you regularly beat your sisters to a bloody pulp for not agreeing with you? Do you despise your parents and secretly do things to hurt him? Let it all out. Tell us your crimes, join us and you shall be cleansed.
hmoob7: why does your cult have a slave camp in hemet california? is it normal for a [religion] to rob it's members of their money and make them disconnect from family? do you believe that (as jenna elfman does) that aids is a state of mind? p.s. i had a shower this morning so you don't have to clean me! p.p.s. xenu says hi. he is alive and well working in a burger king in montana.
what a damn freak you are, your little cult has been found out for what it is, you cant use your bully tactics on here you mug, i tell you my crime, to hope to meet ppl like you one day and rip a new ass hole for ya !!!!!
give me a real answer to this one, why do some of you dodge questions by asking back outrageous rhetorical questions? I don't give a shit what god or set of dogmas anyone believes in. but it's clear just like the catholic church there may be unethical actions being carried by the institution it self. and thats were the problem is; the institution. Now lets see an intelligent well thought out response
So did DM beat, humiliate w/twisted games of musical chairs & denigrate the top managers of scientology who dedicated their lives to it? What are DAVID MISCAVIGE'S crimes?
Did OT8 Wally Hanks beat & sexually molest boys & girls in that $cn school?
Did S.O. parents despise their kids to leave them in squalid nurseries to be "cared for" by children in the Cadet org & at the mercy of pedophiles hired on staff?
Were women in the S.O. forced to get abortions? Children used as slave labor?

I don't think any religion should be exempt from taxation.
It's kind of a no-brainer.
Feel free to overtax them if you wish, to help pay for the damage they've done (and continue to do) to the world.
