The problem I have with the way this is phrased is that it implies that Scientology being a scam is somehow an "alternative" to it being a religion - the way the question is phased implies it cannot be both, and I find that to be dishonest bullshit designed to placate religious people's sensibilities. Yes, it can be both a religion, and be a dishonest scam. Most religions are just as dishonest, but their origins were so long ago that we're more used to their lies as being commonplace.

Scientology uses a system of bait-and-switch in various ways, and the cross is one of them. Because their symbol looks like a cross (it is actually a crossed-out cross, where they claim each corner represents a "dynamic"), they can fool people into thinking they are a religion just like Christianity. they have also added the word "church" to their name for that reason.

One of the most valuable books I borrowed from my dad's shelf when I was a youngster was Sargeant's "The Mind Possessed". I think it should be required reading at high school. Most people are unaware of just how malleable the human mind is, and the things I learned from that book acted as an inoculation against cults of all kinds (including religions) throughout my development into an adult. I highly recommend it.

Why is it that evidence of duplicity, scare tactics, power-grabbing, and outright lying is considered reason to not call an organization a religion? There's plenty of precedent for calling such behavior religious. The only difference is that with Scientology, we get to see it happening at the beginning of a new religion instead of having to delve into the past to see it.

Well in order to gain tax-exempt status as a religion from the IRS, scientologists faught a legal battle over some 25 years - with more than 2000 lawsuits filed agains the IRS. They finally won in 1991, when the IRS basicaly backed down and settled for an agreement.

Nowdays, Scientology has thousands of lawyers, scientologists aswell, all of them willing to work for free to fight for the cult.

It would be inconcievable to try to pull the tax exempt from them, the IRS knows that very well..

The main problem I have with Scientology is that when I personally went to their NYC location, I feel that they didn't think I was important enough to talk to because I am not famous or am not pretty.

They seem to be caught up in how people look. All their spokespeople are very handsome.

That makes me feel sort of intimidated.

If that's the only main problem you got from them - coming off and appearing as shallow - then that's actually the least of your worries. If you research Scientology on the internet and the horror of ex-scientologists and long-time critics of Scientology's abuses, you'll learn that it is much more - a sinister organization that drains the life savings of its members, breaks up families, and harasses critics by abusing the legal system.

The issue is that no other religion charges you money before telling you what the religion is all about. In order for consumers to make a reasoned choice they must have the facts on what they are buying.

Tithes are voluntary. Donations are REQUIRED to advance to "salvation" in Scientology. People are never told give 12K to other churches/mosques or Jesus/Muhammad won't save you.
