I chose to keep Ashley because, let's face it, at least she is given SOME characterization to be killed by the Bioware face and a few issues with the voice actor (who did much better in ME2), whereas Kaiden... fuck him, I want to fuck Ashley.
Hated Kaiden. Died every single time. Generic good guy, same as Carth from KotoR. I wish they played happy music after he died. However, this is good enough to counteract that.
Clint Mansell may have a bunch of great film scores under his belt, but when it comes to Mass Effect, he has some awful big shoes to fill. Here's hoping he can match Jack Wall, Sam Hulick and the rest in ME3.
I find it a bit cynical that BioWare made this music play both during the sex scene of Mass Effect, and on board the Normandy after the Virmire mission, where you just left a close friend to die in a nuclear explosion
if they wanted a tough decision they should have made you choose between Garrus and Tali. Or Wrex and Liara. Or Saren. Anybody but these two, really. Kaiden is Mr. Generic and Ashley is utterly unlikable.
In my first playthrough. Ashley killed Wrex in that scene on Virmire when I didn't want her to. So just for that, I left her behind to die. I hated that bitch. In my 2nd playthrough. I managed to keep him alive.
@HCTFuzz722 Wrex or Liara? Easy, Liara dies every time. Wrex was an awesome Krogan badass. Garrus or Tali is a harder one, hm... I'd pick Tali. I agree that Kaiden and Ashley were generic and unlikable though. A very bland choice. I kept Kaiden just because he's a man and I'm a woman... lol.
The burdens and responsibilities of leadership are too often overlooked by its prestige and position. Decisions and commands come from you, but the pressures of being counted on to make the right decision change a person. The loss of a crewmate was not on Saren's hands, it was yours; it was your duty to carry out the mission and get everyone back alive and safe. Because of your actions, you let a member of your crew die.
No leader should ever be burdened with that kind of blood, but they are.
Every time I make the choice, it's hard on me. After the mission, I go to the spot where that crew member used to stand on the ship and just listen to the music. Game or no, I felt like they were under my command and I feel like I let them down when one of them dies. As Shepard said "I don't like people dying under my command..."
I had to play this song because it just felt so out of place without it when my game glitched and started playing the regular Normandy music after Virmire.
after hearing this theme on the normandy post virmire i made a vow, i would fins Saren and shove my pistol so far up his ass that he would be vomiting bullets
I actually got to meet Jack Wall in person at a concert called Video Games Live. He is an awsome guy and the piece they did on Mass Effect was incredible. It's pretty easy to find on YouTube.

this ost is very uninspired, heck comparing this to biowares previous titles (KOTOR) i feel as if they have delved into a new medium of auditory suckage, enlighten us with some more Bastilla Shans theme and Taris apartments! ME3 better have a substantiated score for it will lure the visual aesthetics of the game(which are monumental nonetheless) into utter dismay...
I find this to have such a strange undertone...there's something going on there I haven't put my finger on yet but it's....somehow romantic -and- eerie at the same time. Almost feels to me as though the love were being watched, by some awarness that can't understand it.
@kenjimaster666 I was being metaphorical at the time, but perhaps not. Perhaps there is some sort of "other" awareness. Listen for yourself. That doesn't strike me as totally human-sounding.
Hey I know, I was just messin', didn't mean for that to sound hostile in any way. I totally know what you mean, this theme has an odd, eerie feel to it. Yet still somehow romantic. =]
If you want to listen to this (or any video) on a loop, replace the " watch?v= " segment of the video's web address with " v/ ", and place " &loop=1 " at the very end.
Hence, the URL looks like this, without spaces:
h t t p : // w w w . youtube . c o m /v/2hr76SVj3tE&loop=1
this song is used after virmire and it does make you feel sorry for what ever choice you made. Music is what makes this game so emotional, it really works well with the theme of the period in game play.
If you don't stay loyal to your intrest from mass effect in mass effect 2, you wont have them in mass effect 3.
Also, if you decide to cheat on your intrest in mass effect 2, everyone youve been flirting with will all come at you, forcing you to chose one of them.
Love ME1 soundtrack, so emotional, so intense, so memorable.

The sad thing is, to most people, the proper dialogue for Kaidan's death would be, "I'm sorry Kaidan, but you don't have a vagina."
